We turned off the main road too early, and ending up taking a very windy, hilly and terrifying humpback bridge route to the site. Use the directions given, it really does make a difference! The relief wardens were welcoming and left us to our own decision as to where to pitch, but not before advising where it was wettest. The actual wardens were also very welcoming, easy to approach and very helpful and incredibly apologetic that the grass had not been cut, due to the breakdown of the tractor. This wasn't a big issue, but as it's an all-grass site, and the pitches are quite a way back from the roadways, we continuously got very wet feet the whole two weeks we were there. The site is in a wooded valley, and for the most part is very quiet indeed, although we did notice at weekends the local roads seem to be a race track for motorbikes. The local hunt woke us very early one morning coming through lane alongside the site, and there was some military aircraft noise on a couple of evenings. As others have said there are a LOT of dogs on this site. We have a dog, but we don't let it bark at every other dog and human, as our neighbouring pitch did. Luckily, before I could complain they left after only 2 nights. My advice would be: if you don't like dogs, don't use this site. There is a dog walk adjacent to the site, we were able to let ours off the lead, but as everyone should, we kept him under control. Also there are excellent off lead walks at Simonside Hills or Forest, 5 minutes up the road in the car. Wildife abounds at Nunnykirk and we frequently saw deer, lots of pheasants and other birds. The owls seemed to behaving a shouting match for a few nights! Rothbury is a great little town, with shops selling everything we needed. We'd go back, but maybe earlier in the year nect time.
