Great site for walkers

We stayed for two nights at this lovely site. Clearly, it's not for those that want facilities, wi-fi, TV etc but it's ideal for peace & quiet, superb walks and enjoying the Yorkshire Moors in general. It is a shaded site with pitches attracting either morning or evening sun but not both, and whilst the nearby road creates some noise, we didn't find it at all intrusive. The village is a delight and well served by the Abbey Tearooms and shop (a must for coffee/lunch) and the local pub opposite the site. Wi-fi can be accessed if visiting the pub. Access to the site is via a narrowish country road but we had no difficulty in our medium-sized motorhome. There's an enclosed dog exercise area which, whilst small, is fine for allowing dogs a romp off-lead. We didn't find the design of the site (long and narrow) at all off-putting or people accessing the service point and bins a nuisance. The welcome from the wardens and information available (see the information room especially for local walks) were spot on. We look forward to going back.

Could offer so much more

We visited in early August after a couple of weeks on CLs in Scotland. This was the third or fourth time we have visited the site, though not for a couple of years. The area is beautiful and offers great walking and cycling. We visited the pub opposite but I wouldn't say the welcome was warm. On arrival, the site was spotlessly clean and stayed that way for our stay. Bins were never full, water facilities never dirty, this despite the site being full. I was disappointed not to get a hardstanding after a few days of heavy rain, but the grass was a good size and seemed well drained. However, the long and narrow design of the site means it all looks a little cluttered. A minor irritation to me is the multitude of signs everywhere on the site, far too many in my opinion. A peaceful stay it was not. Our pitch was very near to the entrance, so we had a constant stream of arrivals and departures parked outside. The road can be busy at times, the pub also has a couple of industrial units attached to it, so you also have the "Beep Beep" of forklifts operating in the day. However the biggest nuisance was the other people on the site, constantly walking up and down to fill water, empty water, empty rubbish etc. I know this has to be done, but seems like some people have to do it 3 or 4 times per day, are they that bored that this is all they can think of doing? Also, the current fashion seems to be for enormous caravans being towed by enormous 4x4s to accommodate two middle aged people, these cars also seem to be constantly in and out of the site. Others have mentioned poor TV reception, this doesn't worry me but the lack of phone and mobile data was a minor annoyance. I understand this is not the fault of the site. However, the Caravan Club wifi came up offering broadband at 8p per day yet the site literature mentioned. £3.50 per day. It was impossible to connect to in any case, so I guess I shall never know. My stay here left me with the conclusion that I prefer the small and basic sites of CLs. This is no reflection on the people who work there as they do a good job.

Fab location for the North York Moors

Perfect location for exploring the moors. Extremely peaceful. There's a great disused railway track to walk/cycle around the whole of the valley (8.5 miles), you just have to get up to it .. a very steep ascent in places, but well worth the views. There's only one pub in the village (The Coach House Inn), directly opposite the site, worth booking gin advance if you want to eat. A small, but friendly village shop. Pickering is 10 miles away for bigger food shops. No facilities on site, but the pitches are beautifully maintained.

Its ideal if you like trees and no TV or phone

We stayed here twice now and its very low cost which reflects the lack of facilities. A bit of A Marmite site because you will love it or not like it based on your needs . TV reception is really poor and this site could do with a booster system . Come on Caraven club please invest. Shame only one pub opened now due to covid . Some members are saying peaceful spot . However this is one of five sites we visited in last 7 days and the passing road is very noisy. To make it worse the tree lined narrow site has not many sunny pitches Not much the wardens can do about these issues but the site is well looked after and some would no doubt enjoy The Howard . Not us though.

Perfectly sited for the NY Moors

I'd very much recommend this site as a base for the North Yorkshire Moors. There's no toilet or shower block, but that's the only reason it doesn't get 5/5 for facilities. For the same reason it might not be perfect for families but was ideal for us. Everything else is very well kept. The site is great for dogs (I think most of the other caravaners had at least one). We travelled with four dogs and the combined benefits of an enclosed dog area on site and the fabulous countryside around made it ideal for them. The site staff were extremely friendly and helpful. We were meeting friends who were staying separately in a motor home and the staff helped us to get two pitches together. They also made a point of letting us know that our pitch wasn't booked on our last day so we could have a more leisurely departure from site. In general the site is very peaceful, although there is a little road noise from time to time from the road into the village which runs alongside the site. We didn't find it intrusive though. We'll definitely be returning.

Peace and tranquility

We wanted peace and quiet, and that's what we got for the first 5 days of our stay, the second 2 we were treated to not a bad band but the sound of a very noisy " Birthday Party" from the farm across the road, with screaming on the Saturday night, but hey that was our only complaint, This is a lovely friendly site, it had the basic needs for a site, and was very clean, and the wardens very helpful, We noticed a few of the other visitors not so sensitive to the effort that this team apply, not cleaning up after their dogs, when there is ample space and facilities for dogs, and others not using hand facilities where there is clear notice all around the site. Its a little tight on the road at times to get there, but its in a lovely area there is a lovely square with tea shops just off the site ad a pub which sadly closed whilst we were there so didn't get to go in, and within driving distance to some stunning coast line, national trust and English heritage sites.

Great getaway albeit with minor glitches

Lovely site, no phone signal or WiFi (apart from near reception), great walks, and small village. Some reviews say choose site on side of river as side closest to road noisier, but no difference, both just as noisy in early morning with, on three occasions in 6 days, locals blaring car horns and shouting to wake guests... on one morning shouting ‘fire, fire!. Obvious some locals aggrieved at the site, don’t think we’d go back. Note also that on our trip at start of May, more insects from river around vans on river side as opposed to roadside, even saw two guests changing sides. It’s also narrow 10 mile road off main road to site. Apart from this nice quiet and very reasonable site!

Good location.

Well kept site in a lovely location. Good pubs close by. I was aware that there were no facilities but I underestimated the impact of not having any phone or internet when it came to planning days out especially with covid restrictions in place everywhere. I did manage a reasonable TV signal with my status aerial and visited the pub for wifi. There was no gas exchange available. Dog friendly site, in fact nearly every unit had a dog. I recommend this site for its location in a beautiful village and close to several others.

Lovely peaceful stay in N Yorks Moors

This is a lovely basic site, basic in that there are no showers or toilets but if anything that adds to the charm. Nicely situated on the edge of Rosedale Abbey, the site is immaculately clean and very well looked after by the wardens. On our arrival we were offered some parking mats as we were on a grass pitch with a 4.5T twin axle and the forecast was for changeable weather. This was a great help as it rained most days and the grass was slippery after a shower on our day of departure. The mats worked a treat and saved any need for a tow. We loved the peace and quiet of the site ( apart from the local boy racer who liked to pass the site at 6.30am constantly hooting his horn - not bothered, just turned over and went back to sleep ) and the proximity of the pub over the road which did excellent food. We had 4 meals there during our 7 day stay. There are 2 lovely cafes in the village as well and basic shopping is also facilitated. We didn't get out as much as we would have liked but we will save that for next time. Facilities are only marked down because there really aren't any apart from water and waste and electricity but everything was very clean. You can get wifi from the office if you want it. Great site and super staff.

Lovely setting for getting away from it all

There no phone signal! Marvellous! There's no internet! Even more marvellous! Just perfect when you want to get away from it. Loved the site, we would have preferred to have a toilet block but perhaps that would take away some of the appeal. You could never call the site noisy and I'm sure nobody can expect the local farmers to worry about us caravaners but as our pitch backed on to the road, there was some early morning traffic that was enough to disturb sleep. Next time I'll select the brook side of the site. We'll be back for certain.
