Disappointing!

Had high expectations but this site is more 3* than 5*. We paid for a fully serviced pitch of 160 sq.m, but the allocated pitch was neither. It was uneven., narrow and had a view or a carpark. We moved to a much better pitch, which was fully serviced, after I complained. It seemed odd not to honour our booking in the first place when the site was almost empty. Whole camping area was unkempt with long grass and shrubs unpruned. A great pity because the site is in a beautiful setting and a very good location for visiting Quimper. The owners have invested in lots of lodges - perhaps the pitches are no longer sufficiently lucrative. Swimming pool area looked lovely but was no longer being heated as the high season was over so we didn't have a dip! We would not stay again.

Wouldn't stay again.

We booked a superior pitch (described as having own water, grey waste, fridge, garden furniture) on the basis that there were really bad reviews on here, but we really wanted to visit Quimper and thought the superior facilities would compensate! We found that the water was a shared tap, the grey waste was a shared soak away (situated under the water tap). Yes we did query with the site and the club (who were exceedingly helpful) and discovered that these were supposed to be shared facilities. The fridge turned up eventually and the garden furniture. The price also included wifi for the stay but we never got that working. The restaurant/bar closed earlier than advertised (by an hour on one night). No one could tell us when the shop opened (we were given 2 different times, then the next visit to reception they admitted they didn't know). The toilet block was not cleaned for the 5 days we were there (nor was it checked). Security is lax - there are barriers at the entrance but you can drive round by moving 3 small cones. On our last night they took on 9 travelling units who were playing load music until 1am in the morning and no action was taken. None of the staff seemed at all interested in the campers. We booked through the club and they were very helpful when I rang to check what I thought I'd booked and they mediated with the site on my behalf - to no avail though!

Pleasant stay

We stayed here recently and had a very pleasant stay. We were allocated an extremely large pitch with EHU and water. The facilities were good, lovely hot showers. Very scenic walk along the river to the town. The streets are pedestrianised and cobbled so it is good for walkers. Lots of cafes and restaurants. Obviously it is not high season when we stayed so we had a different experience to others there in high season.

Will never go again

We booked to stay at L'Orangerie middle of June 2019 and paid extra for a larger pitch. On arrival we were allocated probably the smallest pitch on the site - which we naturally complained about and were given an alternative but even that was less than we booked. As others have said, there was a wedding on the first night and the Gents sanitaires were closed off, meaning Gents had to use the Ladies facilities - not particularly good for either sex. During the evening, some of the guests came into the campsite looking for more toilets and when they couldn't find any they relieved themselves where they could in full view of the campers- disgusting. The next day, the Gents facilities were opened up and I can honestly say they were the worst I have ever seen - not used but seen - they were absolutely filthy and frankly unsafe healthwise. It took until nearly 1030 that morning for them to be cleaned - well past the time campers use facilities. In addition, vehicles were using the path to the toilets and churning it up quite badly which meant more dirt in the toilets and more dirt in everybody's vans. We have since made a formal complaint which seems to have fallen on deaf ears and were offered no recompense for a very expensive, thoroughly unpleasant stay. Clearly the management of this site concentrate on satisfying Wedding guests much to the expense of campers. Quimper is a nice little town but we will never return as a result of the horrendous experience we had at L'Orangerie. Never again.

Could be so much more

We stayed in May this year but there was some minor issues. The facilities were not cleaned daily and when we were there they had wedding on, consequently the men's facilities was closed and they had to use the ladies. The swimming pool wasn't open, the shop wasn't open and the restaurant/bar seemed to only open when somebody could be bothered to open it !! The site is in an excellent position and setting. It has fantastic facility's when available !! ok the pitches are slightly overgrown but they were large and did have easy access.

Good site for a short stay

Arriving at the end of September we found all but the most basic facilities were closed (which we expected), which makes this site quite expensive for what you get. There were not many occupied pitches, but as one toilet block was closed most people were pitched together at one end of the site. Unlike previous reviewers we didn't find the place untidy or excessively overgrown - who wants hedges trimmed like a show garden anyway?.The toilet and dishwashing facilities were kept clean, despite bad weather causing some mud to be trampled in - this was inevitable, but the cleaner did a good job. The reception is some distance from the site, but that's not too much of a nuisance. More of a nuisance is that to use the foot and cycle path into Quimper you have to go all the way back past reception to enter the path and then double back. Any direct access from the site is fenced off, presumably for security reasons, but it does add 10 minutes or so to the walk into town. This is a good site if you want to visit Quimper, but would not go back otherwise. We obviously can't comment on the facilities for families in high season, but they appear to be good.

Poor quality and expensive

Whilst many of the pitches are a good size, most are overgrown with low tree branches making access difficult and untidy hedging. At this time of year many of the pitches were littered with fallen and rotting apples - as were many of the pathways - clearly nobody had made any attempt to remove these for weeks! Both sanitary blocks are very tired and grubby and are not thoroughly cleaned on a daily basis - both are now beyond recovery with a deep clean and need revamping. The site generally feels un-loved and poorly maintained and it appears management are more interested in the golf course than the campsite as demonstrated by the fact that the campsite reception is shared with the golf reception and is completely isolated from the campsite itself! The site has open access with no on-site security. We won't be going back.

Disappointing return

We returned to the site for the third time having had a positive experience previously. Developments included a new reception and excellent water park unfortunately these are now situation a ten to fifteen minute walk from the camping area. The facilities in the main campsite did not meet the advertised five star standard. The pitches while spacious were unkept. The toilet facilities were adequate but with minimal cleaning through the the four nights of our stay. Dishwashing areas were not cleaned nor the bins there emptied. The site also offers wedding facilities and on the Saturday night the music from the wedding continued till 5.45am. Concerns expression to reception about the cleaning of the toilets were not addressed and detritus from the wedding littering the floor of the men's toilets was not cleared up. We would not return and would not recommend the site to others.

It could be so much more

This is a site I so much want to write good things about. Quimper is a lovely city, the pitch we had was wide and spacious. The staff were great and the pool/’aquapark’ was fun and interesting. All this was just what I have come to expect from a Castels site. However, the site fails on the most basic of issues. There are 2 sanitation blocks; one by the summer palace is modern, clean and more than acceptable. It is the other one in the centre of the campsite which fails so spectacularly. The block is very old and when we were there only the male side was open, enquiries at reception prompted an answer that ladies were to use the same facilities. Not a problem where it is set up to be unisex, however in this case – access to the toilets was by passing the gents urinals – not a satisfactory solution. So if you are a female visitor, make sure you pitch at the southern end of the site. I’d love to go back as there was more of Quimper to explore – but until the washing facilities are sorted – it won’t be here.

A Great Site

Stayed here for 3 nights in June 2017 , it's a nice site very quite at this time of year with only 2 vans on our section of the campsite and only about 20 units on the whole site . The swimming pool and bar are lovely. The approach rd to the pitches need looking at the over hanging trees will do some damage to the roof of motorhomes, we had to find another route to our pitch because we where in danger of damaging the sat dish and roof vents ! . The town of Quimper is about a 20 -25 minute walk and has some very nice cafes and bars .
