Nice Site Spoilt by Ongoing Work

This is quite a small site of about 50 pitches, compact and in a pleasant location next to a pretty lake (les Étangs). The grass pitches are quite level and each is bordered by hedges to give a degree of privacy, and the “privilege” pitches provide individual water and drainage; the electricity supply uses the same connector as in the UK, and was sufficient for all our needs. Unfortunately the water supply required a bit of DIY to get our hose connected due to a fair degree of corrosion on the tap threads. There is free wifi, but I fould this ineffective unless you were within about 20yards of reception. It also has a no-frills swimming pool appropriate for the size of the site, and a children’s play area. All in all, a comfortable little site as a base for exploring the Normandy area. There was however one major problem regarding the two shower facilities, which were separated into male and female; one of the men’s blocks was closed due to major refurbishment work, which put quite a strain on the only other block which had just two showers and two loos. There were three wash-basins but two were in a virtually windowless room in which the lights were not working. Also, the showers were of the push-button type with no temperature control, and the water was barely tepid. Like many French campsites there are cabins for rent, which don’t appear to have their own washing facilities and this put an extra strain on the shower blocks. I was glad we were there for only 3 nights, as it was very hot and I got quite frustrated with far too few showers and loos available. I would recommend these places to visit in the area: Deauville, a beautiful classy seaside resort, Honfleur with some beautiful historic streets and buildings, Pont Audemer (next to the camp site), and of course Rouen with its connection with Joan of Arc. Finally, take plenty of insect repellent; being near water does encourage the mosquitoes and other insect life.
