The words Volkswagen and campervans are synonymous.
In April of 1947, Ben Pon, a Dutch importer of Volkswagen vehicles walked into the factory and saw a very unusual vehicle which had been built by the employees to assist them transporting heavy parts from one production hall to another. Later that month he sketched the Volkswagen Transporter, a forward control vehicle with a box shaped body and a rear engine. Through his persistence with his bosses at Volkswagen, their design department created a prototype which was built a short time later. In 1950 the Volkswagen T1 Transporter (more commonly known as the ‘Splitscreen’ or ‘Splitty) was launched and the rest is history.
