Why stay here ...

The Old Wheelwrights Retreat is located in the quiet village of Firsby at the foot of the Lincolnshire Wolds, Much of this area is designated ‘An Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’, and very close to the Coastal Resort of Skegness, known for the ‘Joly Fisherman’.

We are tucked away behind large wooden gates. You’ll be pleasantly surprised when you venture down towards our CL site. It is a peaceful 2 acre, adult only site with grass pitches and 10amp Electric Hook Ups, overlooking the large picturesque pond. We have a one bedroom holiday cottage available to rent.

The “must see” Gunby Hall Estate and Gardens is just down the road This is a stunning National Trust Country House dating back to 1700.

Only 10 miles away is the seaside town of Skegness with all its fun sights and activities. Just south of the town centre of Skegness is Gibraltar Point Nature Reserve. This is well worth a visit, with information centre, coffee shop, outside protected decking and wonderful views across the marshes.

For those of you who are interested in leisure activities for Motor Racing, the famous Cadwell Park is under 20 miles away. Another popular choice in the area is golf and numerous popular courses can be found close by.

Locally you will find many public footpaths for your enjoyment. Also, we are fortunate to have the Firsby Curve nearby to the end of the site. The history of Firsby is an interesting one where the railway is connected, it used to have its own station. For enthusiasts it is just a short walk to the Firsby Curve and trains run from Boston to Skegness, if you’re lucky the driver will return a friendly wave. The nearest station you can hop on it is at Thorpe Culvert approximately 3 miles away.

Within a short drive, you will find the ancient port and market town of Wainfleet All Saints. The famous Batemans Brewery has been crafting beer here since 1847. You can book a tour (check availability) and get an opportunity to taste the raw materials and the beer at the varying stages of the brewing process.

There is a Heavy Horse Centre in the next village which is a charity run organisation and a worthwhile visit (for opening times and events check online).

Within the immediate area there are farm shops and roadside opportunities to purchase local produce. Our closest local amenities are located in the historic market town of Spilsby just 4 miles away. A delightful town for browsing and indulgence with a wide variety of shops, cafes and the attractive St James’ medieval parish church. Market day (with its live auction) is every Monday morning.

Eating out in the area caters for every pocket with lots of wonderful local pubs and restaurants within a short drive, we would be happy to recommend.

Whether you are planning relaxation or new activity, Andy and Sarah look forward to welcoming you and helping you enjoy your stay at The Old Wheelwrights Retreat.

The Old Wheelwrights Retreat
Our second visit this year, everything is just perfect. Sarah and Andy have bent over backwards to please everyone who visits. This site warrants CL of the year. Jim and Janet plus two German Shepherds AAA+++

It just gets better!

The Old Wheelwrights Retreat
Our second visit, with the hardstandings and gravel drive, toilet, shower and washing up sink, the site is now complete. Sarah and Andrew make you feel so welcome, I would have no problem with nominating this as CL of the year!

Our best CL so far!

The Old Wheelwrights Retreat
A beautifully presented site hosted by a great couple. Andy and Sarah have really got the balance right here. Everywhere is well maintained and well presented but not to the extreme you daren’t move and enjoy it. The facilities are clean and the shower is great - hot and powerful. But what really did it for us was the setting and thought therein. A beautiful pond with a central island, visited by birds all day long, a wooden gazebo overlooking the pond equipped with table and chairs, a summer house with comfy armchairs, a shepherd’s hut with everything you can think of from an umbrella, to books, board games and even fold up chairs. So delightful was the setting that we cancelled our plans for the day and instead spent our whole weekend on site! It rained but that didn’t matter - we relaxed in the summer house; the sun shone - we had a bbq. Never has a CL site had so many options. So if you are like me and want the perks of an adult only peaceful CL site but not just a field - look no further than The Old Wheelwrights Retreat. Can’t wait for my next recharge weekend there.

Great CL site

The Old Wheelwrights Retreat
This is a great CL site. Well kept large pitches. Shower and toilet facility were fantastic. Lovely gardens and warm welcome by owners. Dog walk on site and also a circular walk from site. Beautiful site to chill by the pond with a glass of wine or visit the shepherd's hut which is full of dvds/ books if the weather turns. Close to East Kirkby Air museum and Skegness with all the seaside has to offer. Fresh eggs from the on site chickens. We had a fantastic stay and definitely will be booking again. Thank you Sarah & Andy, your site is lovely.

Peaceful beautiful CL

The Old Wheelwrights Retreat
Stayed at The Old Wheelwrights Retreat for 2 nights. Can easily say this is the best maintained, most peaceful and beautiful CL we've ever stayed at. Andy and Sarah met us with a warm welcome with plenty of information about the site and its amenities. Therecare nice circular dog walks of varying lengths off site on quiet roads and tracks. Unfortunately no pubs or shops in the village of Firsby but market town of Splisby is only 5 to 6 minutes drive away with pub and shops. Fish pond is great with large stock of young fish, though its not for fishing in, just for enjoying the sound of the fountain and relaxation. There is a shepherd's hut with games, dvds etc to enjoy, plus a reading room to again relax, read or enjoy the sound of the radio. Finally there are free range chickens which provide plenty of eggs to buy. The combined single toilet and shower are excellent, spacious and clean. To sum up, the CL is fantastic to relax and enjoy the bird song, we will be back. Thanks to hosts Andy and Sarah.
