I use a garmin GPS and just put 2 spare AA batteries in my pocket

Good advice certainly but sadly my watch has a built in battery and I just use that, The eTrex is hardly ever used but still carried.

Amazing, I wish I knew about thesewink

Fear not PO we do carry spare battery packs when going out but they won't last forever, Solar power can slow down the discharge but it won't fully charge. My solar powered GPS watch is like that, using the solar power does give extra 'range', a lot of extra range in the summer, but eventually it will need plugging in.

Except when it's raining or dark or foggy of course. And that's when you'll need it the most.

How long/far are you planning on walking? 🙄

If you read the mountain rescue reports and advice you'll see that it's not about having enough power for your planned walk but having enough if anything happens and you end up benighted or stuck. In fact the advice is to switch off your phone, or someone's phone, to keep as a reserve as most will be taking pics, using their map functions... which uses up more power. As I said when you may really really need it it will be dark, cold (further affect battery power), foggy and then if you've used up all your battery during the day?

Read some reports and you'll see how people have been caught out.

Daughters is complaining how her apple phone seems to re-charging every 9 hours.

Off topic a bit but the point is that there is a place for paper and digital and no one should be forced into using just one, or labelled as quaint?

I was about to request the latest price list and am concerned to discover that there isn't one, if indeed that is the case.

A lack of pricing makes the handbook pretty useless as far as club sites are concerned.

I forgot that you're always right .....

you've strayed a long long way from using a site directory and wandered on to fell walking where an OS map & compass would be of more use.

Each to their own - as someone once said.  I got my Handbook last week and read through it. One gem I spotted that I had not known about before is that there is a rule against setting up a hot tub on site.

I'm not sure how old Elderly is in your eyes, TG, BUT I think that your friend will still be ok for at least this year if he's not yet junked the previous Directory undecided

He is in his 80's Brian. By his own admission he doesn't think he will have many more years towing a caravan around Britain.

He is very put out by the clubs attitude that if you don't 'do' smart phones and internet then its 'tough'.

The other club could gain a new member.

I'm sure that if he could be 'steered' towards the advantages of the web he'd see how he'd be able to use it. My Dad is 84 this year & uses the web pretty well ... he's had a mobile phone since the days of full sized SIM cards, not quite as early as the original bricks but not far off.
