Disappointed Insurance information

Very disappointed when talking to the Club regarding renewing my caravan insurance to find that they had incorrect information regarding replacing our van under the New for Old cover. When I checked the amount with them that would be needed to replace our existing Sterling Continental 580 the representative tried to tell me that the cost of this van had reduced since last year. When I queried what replacement van she was basing this figure on she advised me that a NEW Sterling Continental was cheaper than last year. When I tried to advise her that this was not possible as Sterling brand were no longer made she continued to insist that it was listed in her guide and was that the sum I wanted to insure for? Even after referring to her manager she was still questioning me as to why I needed a higher amount of cover despite me telling her that I would need to purchase a Swift Elegance model to have an equivalent caravan. After much discussion she quoted me for the figure I felt was required but I found this whole episode worrying. What would have happened if I had accepted her advice then needed to make a claim ? Would they have paid out to replace my van with an equivalent one or would they have said I had under - insured an refused my claim?  Needless to say I've been busy checking other providers.

I used the club insurance  for almost the entire time I have owned vans (continuously from 1978) ,  have only had one claim and had no complaints how it was settled. I have no reason to think its different now. However when insurance changed to cover and I compared the two policy documents and found all instances of "will pay" had been changed to "may pay" it set alarm bells ringing and I took my business elsewhere in spit of having to pay more.

This subject has been done to death before and I think it was DK who summed it up best as "the choice comes down to how much one trusts the club"

BTW my home is still insured through the club because its insurance..

As you will recall this was explained by a club representative, the may pay is a legal necessity as it is cover not insurance.

Again it is just words. All the claims made by posters on here with the (may pay) club have been paid, while those posters who had non club will pay didn't have their claim awarded. Just words, have a valid claim and it will be paid no matter what the wording.

But as you say trust.

I understand that the clubs caravan poilicy is the same as most other policies in all but name (they are not an insurance company?) and when it was an "insurance" it was via a broker as all other club policies, but is now financed solely by the club (who have add cover),but is cheaper to run?

Yes, this subject has been done to death and I, for one, wouldn't contemplate going elsewhere other than the Club after the outstanding service I experienced last year when, unfortunately, I had to make a claim. I'm not bothered if I'm paying slightly more for my 'insurance / cover'. At the end of the day, it's how you're treated, at what is usually a fairly stressful time, that matters.
