Cirencester Park access road

We were out walking near Cirencester today so thought we'd divert to wander past the club site to see how things looked.

Well, not sure if this is good news or bad, but the access road has been diverted..

So - good news - for anyone with a pothole aversion - it's been resurfaced and the tarmac is now billiard table smooth (apart from the inevitable speed humps!)

Not such good news - instead of a long straight road with plenty of wide stretches to allow for units to pass it is now very narrow and winding, with large boulders each side at the entrance and just a couple of small lay bys for passing, so heaven help you if you meet another unit coming in or out.

I can't see any practical alternative to the "off by 12 and no arrivals before 1" arrangement. We'll just have to wait and see - well, not us obviously! wink

Just Arrived at Cirencester club site..

The access road is so overgrown with grass and weeds each side the rocks are hardly visible. Making it even more cringe worthy...

What is the club doing about improving the situation.?

But didn't you notice the signs saying that the verges are eco-friendly habitats for wild life? A dent in the side of your caravan is a small price to pay for a bit of virtue signalling! It appears that Cirencester College has taken over the old access road for their exclusive use. The college has also built new blocks right up to the boundary with the club site, so some pitches are right beside and overlooked by stairwells et cetera.

There have been a number of recent reviews of Cirencester commenting on difficulties in access - at least in part due to users for other facilities.

This all must be starting to affect bookings I would have thought.  It seems that there are quite a number of people who will no longer visit who have done so before.  And given that you can assume not everyone who feels that this will comment on the forum you wonder where the future of the site lies.

Evening,

I worked Cirencester in November and December last year. Admittedly traffic was slight because of lockdowns etc but we had a few RV friends stay on site in 12 meter Rv's towing trailers. Not the slightest problem with access. One of those RV's arriving met a late leaving motorhome and managed to pass eachother without issue. It's a perceived problem in my opinion.

You might consider it perceived JK and we experienced no significant problems on our visit. However, looking at the reviews there are quite a few that feature it in the negative. It’s a bit late now but surely the club should have had a bit more input at the design stage, perhaps put some money towards the project. A double width road  would have been a good start. As it is, although pot hole free, in my opinion the current access is worse than the original. It’s certainly not particularly pedestrian friendly. Which might become more of an issue, if / when a charge is made for walking through the park into town.

Take your time ,set your mirrors up right , keep a check where the side of your outfit is etc ,no problem
If you cannot do those simple things, then maybe you should consider your driving skills, and that you should not be driving the outfit you have

I recently visited Start Bay and saw som  poor examples  by those driving caravans and motor homes
Two had no mirrors, some needing  so much space each side of their outfits, lack of  patience , not willing to wait, not altering their driving to suit the size of the motor home , and outfit they where driving etc

For me the issue at Cirencester is that the new access was designed and built by the college to replace the very poorly surfaced, but straight,  existing route and move it away from students. All very sensible. However the result, although lovely and smooth was a single track with passing places with very poor sight lines and no pavement for pedestrians, who are not permitted to use the safe route on the old road. It’s students only. At certain times of day, when the parents are picking up the kids from the tennis club it can get very busy. It is also used by the cricket club. If it was just an access to the site it wouldn’t be the same issue.

I used to visit Cirencester at least once a year, but in view of the new road it’s now off my list and a suspect I’m not the only one who has done that. It’s not that I can’t drive, it’s a case of not taking unnecessary risks with my van.

I really don't think you need to be concerned about it. We used it last August, once additional changes had been made. The worst bit about access to Cirencester Park is the first section immediately off the main road and that hasn't changed. There are good sight lines before you enter the narrow section into the site and the road is perfectly wide enough for one way traffic. Leaving the site you also have a good view of the road. Don't be put off by all the hype.
