Caravanning, Motorhoming and Camping are wonderful ways to take our dogs on holiday with us. This discussion is a place to share advice about holidaying with your dogs.

Please note, this is not a place to complain about dogs on campsites. We do fully understand that there can be issues and we would request that you please report these to us via our complaints and compliments for Club Campsites (link below) and please do not misuse Club Together as a channel for complaint. By sending via the appropriate channels your complaint will be logged and dealt with appropriately.

If you do post a complaint we will remove it and ask that people do not respond but report to us. Many thanks.

Report a complaint about dogs HERE (please don't post on Club Together).

Thank you everyone and happy touring! smile

We have done Minack a few times in the past, evening performances. Wasn’t a big problem, we left our tired out Airedales back at camp, windows, skylights open, and we knew most of folks on CL, and owners. We used to keep an eye and ear on each other’s pooches if someone wanted a night out, but if it’s cool enough in evening, ours never move for hours. You definitely need something warm to wear, and bum padding for Minack, but it’s well worth doing. The performance out at sea can be just as entertaining  as the theatre, dolphins, basking sharks, seals, we have seen all three down there.

I suspect we might be without a dog at some point in next couple of years. Hoping this might give a bit of overseas opportunity, but I have bigger problems than dog to take onboard. We are resisting getting a second dog at the moment. If we were going overseas every year, like you TG, and had no one to look after them, we wouldn’t have one. It was hard enough trying to sort out horse sitting, cat sitting, chicken feeding when we had all these, and that was just to holiday in UK.

For us, our dogs have always enhanced rather than limited our holidays in the UK. We don't do cities, theatre, art galleries, stately homes etc on holiday - we go all over the country but it's with walking/hill climbing in mind, so the dogs are ideal companions.

That's the same for us, M. Over 40 yrs of caravanning and always been away with our dog(s). Haven't heard a word of complaint from any of them, as they seemed to know when we were heading off, and were out ready to get into the car prior to us hitching up.

…..in your opinion. Others enjoy the company of their pets on holiday and don’t consider it at all ridiculous. Why should anyone object to something others do on site providing the rules are adhered to?

Indeed you are. I have opinions on lots of things folk do but, as it’s none of my business how people behave on campsites as long as they don’t break site rules, I adopt the attitude of "live and let live" and I wouldn’t dream of posting here about it.

I'm wondering why you consider having several dogs is ridiculous if it doesn’t impinge on you. Of course, if it does affect you in some way, that could be a different matter and that’s where Rowena's guidance comes into play.

Were the dogs causing a nuisance in any way Dooby?

I ask because I live on a tiny street of ten houses, and there are in fact more canines in residence than humans, yet non of the canines are a nuisance in any way because they are well trained and socialised. A couple of houses have no dogs, others have two, three or in one case six but they all get on. We used to have three, but now sadly only one. But ours were quiet, well behaved and socialised/exercised.

There’s a difference between being annoyed with nuisance dogs (in reality bad human owners), and simply not liking or tolerating any dog (a personal trait, for whatever underlying reason). Site staff could, should help with one. The other is a more complex personal issue.

Evening

When we got our first site to run (Exeter Racecourse) we had one day a van with a caravan in tow arrive. They had 14 dogs with them. Immediately alarm bells ring for obvious reasons but, they were the most well trained, obedient beasts you could ever encounter. Never once in two weeks did we hear anything. Lovely caring people with some fantastic dogs. The site was full but we didn't have one complaint and when they left, the pitch was left exactly as when they arrived. Ok that's an extreme but as Tinwheeler states above as long as rules are adhered to what's the issue?

There's always the odd one or two owners who wouldn't have a clue how to train their pet and as a consequence the dogs may be aggressive (I've been bitten twice in 14 years) but in general our members on sites look after their pets.

Live and let live I saylaughing

We've just returned from a 2 week stay on a club site up until 3 days before we left everyone was happy and all other dogs  well behaved then a unit pitched up proceeded to erect a purpose made run at the rear of the pitch which was then the area for 5 west Highland terriers to run, they never stopped yapping at anything that moved from morning till night setting off all the dogs who until then had been well behaved, the owner of the terriers seemed totally oblivious to the noise, in my opinion packs of dogs should not be allowed on club sites surety other members have a right to some peace.
