Proportion of Serviced v Standard Pitches

On this forum the subject of whether there are not enough or too many serviced pitches has been discussed from time to time. We have recently stayed at the new Club site Cayton Village near Scarborough. Nice site and from a motorhome perspective it has good access to public transport. However what surprised me was the fact that the site only seemed about half full over the weekend and I wondered if this was a result of the site having a majority of serviced pitches, 190 out of about 270 pitches in total and people not being willing to pay the extra £3.90 a night? I suspect when the Club refurbish the the site the number of serviced pitches will be considerably reduced as in general the current ones don't meet the Clubs spacing requirements. The reason we had  a serviced pitch was that we wanted a hardstanding and with only 29 standard hardstanding on the site we didn't want to risk it!

I saw one on site today. A bargain at a mere £2 😂

To get back to David's OP. I think that 22% service pitches, as at Chatsworth, is about the limit. If you look at awning pitches, the number of available days for July are broadly similar for standard and service. Although for non awning there are many more standard. Particularly in the cooler months, service pitches are often still available when standard are booked, although will eventually sell. Therefore any increase above 22% at less popular sites, where the service pitches won't sell at the last minute, is likely to be counterproductive.

Troutbeck Head has about a third SP

I don't know if they are this year, but when we were there a few years ago in September, quite a few of the service pitches were seasonal. Given the discount on those pitches it would tend to suggest they were struggling to sell them all at that time.

yes they were but haven't been seasonal for a while now. As I posted somewhere, they are very popular and one midweek day over Easter, they had a higher occupancy rate than non SP

Perhaps some enterprising youngster will offer a "fill your aqua roll and empty your wastemaster, guv. Special price £1.50" wink

well, they've installed a 'empty your cassette and return it gleaming inside and out' machine here (SF) and it's £2 a pop.....

" Now as to wether this is worth £3.90 extra per night, that's for the individual to decide"......

Steve, the issue for me (and other MHers, no doubt) is that you get charged the same for the days (many of them) when you don't use the service....with the size tanks in your Hymer I'm sure you wouldn't be needing to turn the tap on very often....despite being charged for it being there.

perhaps some think it's 'good value' to put 10/20 ltrs in the van (every day just to top up) at £3.90 than it is to put 100 odd in once for nothing?

I suspect that if CC Ltd allowed customers to choose the type of pitch they want SP, HS, Grass, etc. the bookings of SP would drop off considerably as most MH's simply don't need them.

Assuming the "facilities" are clean, of a reasonable standard, and we make use of them, starting with a full fresh water tank and empty waste tank we would be able to go the full 21 days easily; not that we would ever stay that long.  One fill, one dump, and only the cassette to deal with in between - simples.

yet on the full HS sites that I've been on (I can count 5 at least) MH usage of SP is high?
