Why no speeding?

I know this is a thorny issue given the number of complaints on here about speeding on site - and I witnessed it many times.

However, we are currently staying at Carnon Downs near Truro - an Affiliated Site.

It is a very large site in terms of acreage and probably three or four times the size of, for example, Broadway but with a similar number of pitches. As a consequence, there are a number of long straight sections of roadway which you would have thought would have encouraged speeding.

There are no speed limit signs around the site and the only speed bumps are around the reception area.

We have been here almost two weeks and I have yet to see anyone exceeding about 5/6 mph on the site roads . Admittedly I haven’t been watching all the time - better things to do - but the absence of speeders is noticeable.

The only difference between this site and the club sites we have been on is that a lot of the roads are loose gravel rather than tarmac and I wonder if that has anything to do with it?

I suspect that it does make a difference. It is however far more difficult for those with mobility issues in my experience.

yes fully agree, no one drives fast over loose stones, not as steady, and also may throw up the odd one to hit car/caravan/MH/person.

But in my view not as pleasant to walk on or as said above and really not required if people just kept to the limit, and real consequences when they don't.

I think not, I've driven at the recommended speed of 20mph over newly gravelled highways roads and been overtaken by vehicles doing much faster speeds. I suspect you just hit lucky with likeminded considerate folk on site.

if you don't like to walk on gravel why do you chose hardstandings? 🙄

An astute point there MM, well while I can just about tolerate the walk from the caravan door to the site roads, I wouldn't like to walk the whole way round the site on it.

Also the gravel on the pitch is necessary for me to have an enjoyable stay. You prefer walking on wet or muddy/grass when it rains then?

Hard standings are generally compact. The tracks that are a greater problem are the round pebble like tracks that do not compact. For many it is not a case of dislike but of difficulty MM

Before Black Knowl was remodeled it had a gravel road round the site, and speeding was unusual there,as if they did they normally got a rebuke from others near the road because of debris and dust that was created, but now with tarmac roads people just moan to each other or write about it in reviews

We've been going to Black Knowl since 1995 till they remodelled it (ruined it) and it always had a tarmac road round the site , kids on bikes used it as a race track

The cars probably travel at the same speed on commercial sites as on Club sites - but on commercial sites the visitors don't get as agitated about it as those who stay on Club sites.
