'Wild camping' in a motorhome or van

This morning bright and early we drove 6 miles from home to the top of the Kirkstone Pass in the Lake District.

At the entrance to the car park there is a nice big sign stating that overnighting is not allowed. There were 6 vans which had clearly been there all night.

On Sunday bright and early we parked at the small car park by the river in Troutbeck. There is a sign forbidding over night stays here too. One van had clearly been there all night.

This behaviour really makes me cross. It's only day 2 of being allowed to stay away from home and already people are treating our area with blatant disrespect - either they can't read (unlikely) or they just do as they like anyway. No wonder motorhomers and campervanners get a bad press.

Please - if you are visiting the Lakes this year either use a campsite or chose a carpark where overnighting is allowed.

camping experience, grows they may well want the best of both worlds and I don't think the Club have taken that on board yet, but I suspect they have to if those new motorhome members start to think that the Club have a very limited offer so gradually the Club will have to evolve or they will lose those members?

And how do you think that the Club should address this?

It seems some think that they should provide some no service pitches ... but that wouldn't bring as much cash

There certainly are club members who "wild camp" responsibly, but there will be others who are members that disregarded the signs and "dirty camp", although they won't admit to doing so on here. There is no way any of us know whether they bother to read posts on this forum or not. There have been plenty of trolls who have posted on here in the past.

There is no way any of us know there will be 'baddies' amongst the club members, Nellie, but I think it unlikely that anyone so uncaring and irresponsible in their pursuit of a free holiday would bother to fork out the £54 membership fee.

There still are trolls posting on here but I'd not equate that with dirty camping.😐

Many people unable to get abroad this year.😂

Posted on 14/04/2021 22:30

And of course people who went abroad in the past couldn't possibly have been CAMC members? The two were mutually exclusive?

And putting that to one side, these people's first choice when the find they can't go this year is to join the CAMC?

Why would that be? a no service pitch? ,without access to any site facilities?,it would still generate income,as non facility sites do

Go ahead with the trials it promised pre-COVID, whatever that is that they had in mind?

I said "as much" income .... not no income.

Hi OP here,

Just to be clear - l definitely didn't imagine the existence of the signs in the car park and don't need to post photographic evidence. It doesn't take too many brain cells to know that vans covered in frost,  on levelling wedges with silver screens on had been there all night.

I wasn't in any way suggesting that they were leaving rubbish or waste behind, only that they were doing the wrong thing by sleeping in that particular carpark.

It would depend on the area the site concerned is in what the incomewould be as it is now ,and even hardstanding pitches without EHU (what M/C owners seem to want) would be priced as per the other pitches on the site ,

Actually  LLM may have a  point , in spite of Overseas travel being a money spinner  for the club many more  Brits  who camp in mainland  Europe dont seem to be  CAMC  members . I have been a member for nearly as long as JVBwink but in conversation with Brits abroad I find it uncommon to meet anyone else who is  Not a scientific survey of course so cant provide audited data smile

Well I did say putting that to one side (the point about the two being mutually exclusive) that doesn't in any way answer my second point,  which is why these people who go abroad with their units when they find they can't this year suddenly want to join the club?
