'Wild camping' in a motorhome or van

This morning bright and early we drove 6 miles from home to the top of the Kirkstone Pass in the Lake District.

At the entrance to the car park there is a nice big sign stating that overnighting is not allowed. There were 6 vans which had clearly been there all night.

On Sunday bright and early we parked at the small car park by the river in Troutbeck. There is a sign forbidding over night stays here too. One van had clearly been there all night.

This behaviour really makes me cross. It's only day 2 of being allowed to stay away from home and already people are treating our area with blatant disrespect - either they can't read (unlikely) or they just do as they like anyway. No wonder motorhomers and campervanners get a bad press.

Please - if you are visiting the Lakes this year either use a campsite or chose a carpark where overnighting is allowed.

No I was referring to the whole 'experience' of being a member. As I said upthread you join the club as it give you something you want, or as LLM said the company's services. And as people then re-join that can only mean they are satisfied with whatever it is they are getting.

And they are joining, and re-joining in spades. What does that say?

There has never been a "golden age" when everyone took home their litter  and I clearly remember the "Keep Britain Tidy" campaigns when at junior school in the 1950s. Google  "Keep Britain Tidy Campaign" some of the pictures on their website are quite shocking by todays standards.

Perhaps we need to apply the sausage roll test? If you buy a takeaway sausage roll in Greggs it comes in a paper bag. It is probable, that at least 90% of those bags will be disposed of correctly but the 10% that are not are there for all to see giving a disproportionate view of the problem. I don't suppose anyone says "look at that sausage roll bag" thank goodness the other 9 have been put in the bin. I know all that sounds silly but it's the same as the view put forward by this and other threads. The good tend to get tarred with the same brush as the bad. Many people that are long term users of campsites do so because they either just like campsites or wouldn't feel safe camping anywhere else, all perfectly understandable. The problem occurs when others dare to be different by wanting to explore and stay where they want to. The vast majority will do so responsibly but a few won't so as I say everyone gets tarred with the same brush. Takethedogalone suggested up thread that in part the Club has to take some blame, what, heresy!!! But if you think about it whilst the Club is keen to attract new motorhome owners as members it really only wants them to use their sites. Some will say is is the right way to approach it. However with the growing numbers of motorhomers, often without any previous camping experience, grows they may well want the best of both worlds and I don't think the Club have taken that on board yet, but I suspect they have to if those new motorhome members start to think that the Club have a very limited offer so gradually the Club will have to evolve or they will lose those members?

DK. I have to say your sausage roll analogy could raise questions here in Somerset. Our local headlines proclaimed today

HUGH GRANT SPOTTED WITH SAUSAGE ROLL IN FROME!

(makes a change from previous things he was spotted with..)

I presume he put the wrapper in a bin. wink

And how do you think that the Club should address this?

I know CAMC members who wild camp, Nellie, but they do it in a responsible way and use recognised/permitted places.

The OP and Compass are referring to folk who park where they shouldn't and behave irresponsibly, as in the case described by JK.

I have no issue with the former but detest the latter whose behaviour is reprehensible. They are the ones who give us all a bad name and I’m sure none of that group will be reading this.

There certainly are club members who "wild camp" responsibly, but there will be others who are members that disregarded the signs and "dirty camp", although they won't admit to doing so on here. There is no way any of us know whether they bother to read posts on this forum or not. There have been plenty of trolls who have posted on here in the past.

The club is for several type of LV  ,and have already spent a lot of money to help modern moter caravan owners who seem unable as done in the past to cope with pootly designed waste outlets on their vehicles (we modified ours to make them user friendly)

how much more sensibly  and cost effectively be done on any site ,not just both clubs ,that will be beneficial to all members/users not just one section, as with service points
