Leaving dogs unattended in van

I was always under the impression that it was not allowed to leave dogs unaccompanied in your caravan whilst staying on Club sites.

We are currently on the NYM site, near Whitby and there is a poor dog barking and whining in the van next to us.  The owners went out this morning and given the experience of the last few days, are unlikely to be back until 1800 or so. It is clearly in distress - although how much is anyone's guess.

We have approached the wardens who are aware of the barking (the pitch is not far from the office) and told Ros, that the dog has been barking since the owners went out.  They had been told that it was being left on its own but had water and a bed and, in fairness, they have left all the roof lights open. It is nevertheless upsetting to have to listen to it. Mrs Warden also said that she was not aware of any rule preventing dogs being left on their own.

Having had a look at the CAMC leaflet - "Touring with Dogs" - it appears that she is correct:-

"Dogs can become anxious when lonely or uncomfortable. To minimise this, make sure
they have somewhere cool to relax, with good ventilation and access to an ample supply of drinking water if you do have to leave them for short times.
Where possible, please keep your dog with you, especially on hot days. A quick build-up of temperatures in cars, awnings, outfits or tents can be fatal to animals."

This isn't a complaint about barking dogs - my complaint, if I have one - is about inconsiderate owners who, in my opinion, are not fit to look after an animal.

Have the rules changed - and if so - why, because it doesn't seem fair to the dog!

Bill, I'm really struggling to follw your reasoning here - agreed with all the points about not leaving animals.

My question, not difficult to answer surely, is would you object equally if the owners were using AC purely for their own comfort? The noise, presumably would be exactly the same.

Yes, I would. No need for a/c in the UK (or generators for that matter) on sites as far as I’m concerned. If a/c noise is intrusive (not all is) I’d move pitch or site if necessary. My experience of both scenarios is that the type of people who use them in the first place tend not to be considerate to the needs of others and making a friendly point about it usually achieves nothing. It’s just easier to remove oneself from the situation. I’ve stayed on sites with daytime temperatures of 42c without the need for a/c. Adequate ventilation, shade and a fan or two is all that is required. A small fan will move a lot of air in a small space.

I see, something less hypothetical like…… what if the a/c breaks down while the owner is out on a jolly somewhere and the animal dies of heat exhaustion?

That wasn't the question asked though was it? M was asking if people were involved would you have posted the same?

if suppose during last week's very hot weather a family without dogs had decided to stay on site at Hillhead and, with no shade nearby, stay in the MH and take advantage of their AC - would that have provoked the same reaction?

There are modern A/Cas fitted to the Pilot M/c just over the road from us that is almost silent the there are the older type A/C that seem have a permanent rattle when running and I would mention it to the owner undecided

But then as it seems these days with solar panels its a must have whether it is used or not ,it then adds to the complaints about poor load margins on some L\Vswink
