CL Price Rises

I have just read a report on FB about a cl owner apologising for putting up her prices.

I thought it a very refreshing reply to some of the large price increases I've seen lately. What cl's owners have to remember is that they are not the only ones suffering from the present climate, so are the members.

I have pasted the article below with some minor changes for identity reasons.

"Just returned from this little gem CL.  It’s *************** at ************, There are EHUs around the edge of the field and a toilet and shower. The owner is extremely friendly and checked with us most days that everything was ok. She said she had to increase the pitch price this year to £15pn, which I said was understandable and still a very good price. Her response was that she didn’t want to increase it too much as WE had to pay so much more for fuel than last year and if she charged too much people wouldn’t be able to afford to use their caravans and motor homes. I thought that it’s a great shame more site owners don’t have the same outlook.".

We are currently on a CL near Chester we have used several times, it has been £15 for several, years.   When we booked, the owner apologised, saying that they would need to review the price this year, so we had budgeted for £20.

It is a farm Cl, sheltered, hedged area, we have HS, EHU, own tap, waste to hedge, and there is a good toilet and separate shower available if you wish.   Also alternative grass pitches, kept well mown.

When we arrived, the owner again apologised that prices had gone up as they had to pay increased electricity and insurance costs, so the  fee was now £18.   For what is on offer I think this is very reasonable compared to what some are now charging!

The farm type CLs and those without any other income to help  cover costs are quite a different set up which could well make it not viable what some think is expensive

I did stay at Hatton Country World CL a few years ago to walk the Hatton Flight and actually cruised it again last year on "Omega" but had a lot of assistance from the CRT volunteers and from the lovely couple in the other boat whom I shared the locks with. That is a lovely lock flight to cycle and walk along and the cafe which is situated there is really good.

Remember the Hatton Flight from my, much younger, boating days. Plus the delightfully named Itchington Bottom Locksmile

Have you thought of Home Farm at Stoke Bruerne, I don't think it has EHU. There is another one near Leighton Buzzard, Grove Lock? We recently stayed at Overwater Marina at Audlem.

Cheers TDA.  I have always wanted to visit the lock Caan Hill Flight of locks.  It is not somewhere I have cruised in the boat as it is a difficult flight, especially single handed and apparently, there are few places to moor, which you are most probably aware of from info from your OH. OH says it is indeed a spectacular sight, and a good hard cycling work out😁 We cycled from Warwick Racecourse Site along paths of I think Grand Union? That was good, I left OH early, but he found the nice cafe. Somewhere to go back to again. We have the South Yorkshire Navigation Canal close to us, and often do spurs off this. Loads of interesting industrial heritage.

We discovered the Grantham Canal earlier this year. Very rural, lovely cycling along the banks and linking up to other rides. I think the only barge on it runs from the pub on the Belvior Estate, but it’s a lovely place. Belvior Castle close by of course. We used Casthorpe Farm CL, I left a review.

Hi David

I stayed at Overwater for a couple of nights last year as we were thinking of moving Omega there.  I was very impressed with the marina and the CL and we have made arrangements to move there.  I would not mind a CL too much without a toilet/shower, but I am afraid that no EHU is a step too far for me, as I don't have any solar power.  I am hoping to change my M/H for a newer model so will buy one with solar panels or have them fitted on any new M/H that I buy.

The one I commented on earlier, where the price had apparently gone from £18 to £23 without warning, was also a farm type CL, but had no facilities, so IMO is a good comparison in price/costs with the one we are on now.

I think their prices had been pushed well up because it is in a popular tourist area.

Vbfg:

I agree that the Caen Locks are a wondrous sight to behold, if not to run  barge through. We always enjoy it when we are in the area, which we were last year.

One CL which you may want to look into staying as it is within 100 yards of the K&A canal is:

https://www.caravanclub.co.uk/certificated-locations/england/wiltshire/marlborough/church-farm-3/

There's the added bonus of a pub within walking distance for a pint and a meal and Devizes is but 5 minutes away in the car. I did do a review which should be on there.

We are currently at The Anchor CL near to Stafford on the Shropshire Union canal.
Grass pitches, ehu. £18.50 a night.
absolutely peaceful. Lots of walking along the canal if you want. A reasonable about of traffic on the canal.
I will do a few review when we get back home.

The CL I mentioned earlier is a farm CL, I think £20 for basic grass is to much.

A much more reasonable price would be £15.

Another CL we use not to far away, is £15 and not on a farm.  He was £12 until this year now £15, he has h/s pitches so more effort and cost yet he can keep the price down.

An increase of £5 per pitch is way more than the electricity cost.

I agree with your comment that what was on offer was good for £18.

It was quite usual to see CLs increase prices around £1-£1.50 each year. Now they are going up £4-£5 each year in some instances. Including the ones without hook ups🤔 Mind, that’s nothing compared to the price increases for cottages in some locations.

I think that sometimes CLs don’t put their prices up for several years, then realise that costs have increased in the meantime, so the jump seems a bit excessive. Better to do it gradually.
