CL Price Rises

I have just read a report on FB about a cl owner apologising for putting up her prices.

I thought it a very refreshing reply to some of the large price increases I've seen lately. What cl's owners have to remember is that they are not the only ones suffering from the present climate, so are the members.

I have pasted the article below with some minor changes for identity reasons.

"Just returned from this little gem CL.  It’s *************** at ************, There are EHUs around the edge of the field and a toilet and shower. The owner is extremely friendly and checked with us most days that everything was ok. She said she had to increase the pitch price this year to £15pn, which I said was understandable and still a very good price. Her response was that she didn’t want to increase it too much as WE had to pay so much more for fuel than last year and if she charged too much people wouldn’t be able to afford to use their caravans and motor homes. I thought that it’s a great shame more site owners don’t have the same outlook.".

I think that sometimes CLs don’t put their prices up for several years, then realise that costs have increased in the meantime, so the jump seems a bit excessive. Better to do it gradually.

Covid closures have probably added to this too and prices have been out of kilter.

How many times has it been reported on here the "the price shown in the handbook was less than we were charged on arrival.?"when the price in the handbook could be at least 3 years old by this year even if the CL had updated their prices and info when the handbook. was printedundecided

It's also a case of what people perceive as reasonable. £10 for grass, water & waste. Add £5 if EHU and possibly another £5 if a decent loo/shower, not a home for spiders and woodlice.

Start asking £18-20 just for grass, water & waste is not going to attract many punters.

I think you need to come into todays world of pricing and the running costs of todays CLs surprised

Totally agree with your post, those are the prices that we would expect to pay and happy to do so. Not happy to pay £20+ for a patch of rough grass, a tap and some place to empty the toilet.

Running costs have gone up, if you are talking electricity but its not gone up by £5 per unit per night.

Some CLs will have more running costs than others due to them installing toilets and showers.

We personally don't go looking for them as we have a perfectly good shower and toilet in the van.

H/S are nice to have but again we don't go looking for them, just a bonus if there are there.

I feel some CLs are installing more and more things, then putting up the price to cover the cost. Have they been asked to do this or is it something they think campers are looking for.

We are quite happy with a grass site that is well kept and somewhere to get fresh water and empty the toilet, a good view and within reach of something to see and do. That's all we ask of any CL we use.

How much does it cost at todays prices to insure ,  empty the toilet emptying point, even cut the grass

I was shown a bill for emptying cess pits twice weekly about 15 years ago and it was then £204 per load

Prices are certainly increasing across all CLs.

One we have used and liked has  gone up from a reasonable £15 to £20 a night for a basic grass CL.

New owners, in the space of just a few years it has doubled yet nothing has changed on the CL. Davochfin Farm Dornoch.

Such a shame as it certainly doesn't warrant the £20 a night price.

Agree completely. I guess they are taking advantage of the promotion of the 500 circuit. A good site but definitely not a £20 pn site. Had the previous owner not passed away I'm sure that it would not have risen so much in price.

I suppose somebody new coming to the ownership would have carefully looked at the costs (the site does have EHU). Perhaps also looked at other facilities that seem to be offered by the business and concluded that prices either had to go up or would take a price increase. The proof of the pudding will be in the level of occupancy they get. Looking at the availability chart there seems plenty of it? Now is that historic or is it because of a price hike?
