Ease of arrival/welcome

September 2012

We wanted peace and tranquillity, we got it. Not driving a 4x4, and having got bogged down in a swamp in July, and stuck at Chatsworth Country Fair (on the showground, not the camp site), I was a bit apprehensive about arriving at this site, as I knew no-one would be around as Louise does not live on-site. I need not have worried. I had exchanged texts the evening before arrival, and she assured me the ground was dry. It was. There are 2 permanent vans on-site, and the occupants are rarely seen, and friendly when met. This site was bliss - basic (water, electric, waste disposal) amenities, the grass was a little long with abundant nettles & docks on the edges, but if you chose your spot it was lovely. The house next to the site has been re-furbished (no-one living there yet), and the major noise was the combines followed by the straw balers & and disc harrows in the neighbouring fields working to get the harvest (wheat, I think) in before the weather turned (again!). They worked from late morning till c.10 p.m., but were only occasionally intrusive, when in the field yards away. The local walks are either stiled (2 people with 5 dogs - no way), or across newly harrowed earth - nope - will wait till that gets trampled, thanks. But the weather was so hot and sunny, it did not matter as the dogs could not go far even in the evening cool. For this site to be at its best you have to choose the season and the weather. But if you get it right, it is lovely! Would happily go again, but only after a dry spell, certainly not just after anything like the dreadful floods they had earlier in the year.
