Spoiled holiday - beware what you get told about where you can pitch!

When we booked this site by phone, one of the comments made by the owner was "People like to set up on the bank to watch the canal boats." When we arrived we found a long bank, recently mown so we pitched up at the far end, delighted with the situation. A lady turned up after a couple of days and very pleasantly told us we were pitched in the wrong place. We queried this because of the information we'd been given and she told us we could stay. Later the same day two gentlement turned up in a large 4x4 and told us to move. I do admit they were courteous in their request but nevertheless we felt upset. We moved back along the bank, near to the pillbox, as the men had indicated this would be okay. As we were leaving the campsite early one evening, I was opening the gate to let the car out and was accosted by a man with a dog who made some remark about everyone was commenting that we'd been incorrectly sited. At that point I became rather cross and told this person (who I wondered might be the owner) that some signage might be helpful to prevent this happening again and furthermore, the owner should perhaps not be quite so gung-ho when talking to potential customers about being able to pitch up on the bank. There were some people nearby who also had to move. On the far side of the canal were several illegally moored and rather dubious looking canal boats. We rarely lock our caravan but we did so while on this site. It also seems to be a dog walk for most of the village and no, they weren't on the footpath but wandering about all over the site field. Yes, you can access the Downs, Caen Locks, Avebury, Bath and Stonehenge. There was a pub in the village and another along the canal a short way, and shops in Devizes (Sainsbury's and Morrisons) But we shan't be going back. I hope a later review will tell us if some sort of sign has been put up to prevent other caravanners/motorhome owners not having their holiday spoiled as we did.

Beautiful, rural location but got moved half way through stay

This is a very pretty location next to a canal with a swingbridge and views of the hills. There are footpaths leading off in various directions so great for walking and there are 2 pubs 10 minutes away each. We parked initially between the canal and the field beyond the row of tall trees. This was a stunning location on short mown grass and the ground was perfectly dry so no worries about getting stuck. We also wanted maximum solar energy away from trees as there is no hookup. But two days into our stay, we were asked to move as apparently someone had complained that we weren't meant to be there (we weren't the only ones). If we weren't allowed there then some indication up front would have been appreciated. The field is not as attractive a location by comparison, however still very pleasant. But to avoid the shade you would have to park in the middle or else on the hardstanding area near the swingbridge. There is quite a bit of noise from aircraft which seemed to be overhead a lot and the occasional farm machinery. It's worth noting that the field is next to a public footpath and regular comings and goings by pedestrians and walkers. One night there was a bit of noise from one of the narrowboat dwellers but it didn't go on late. The grey waste is not really drive-over as it is slightly raised on a grassy knoll and in the corner so would be awkward to access. But you can get close and use buckets, not a big problem. The tap is also there with a combination lock. Overrall pleasant site and great location but wish we had been able to stay next to the canal.

Lovely quiet spot right on canal side

This is a super spot great for walking the dog along the tow path & although I didn't quite manage it I'm sure the walk to Devises would have been beautiful. There are several pubs along the canal which would make a good stop on route. Mrs Brown was not in when we arrived, although we had been given clear instructions of how to get to a pitch. It is just a field with no facilities, except for a septic tank & a cattle feeder water troff with a tap attached to get fresh water, however, both of which were locked so we could not empty our black water or fill up with fresh. Had we'd been staying for more than the two nights we would have gone to the farmhouse to try & get this sorted, but we had enough water & room in the loo so we didn't bother. So best the check before you arrive that these facilities are available. Great spot though if you like peace & tranquility & watching the odd narrow boat passing by.

Very peaceful, great location!

Very large field but if you  want maximum sun, pitch near the canal or along side the track. The canal is not visible from the field as it is cut low but the downs can be seen to the North east.  It is a lovely one and a half hour walk along the canal into Devizes which is a delightful market town with a brewery which offers interesting tours. The 49 bus stops by the pub in the village which is a ten minute walk through the church yard to the CL. Plenty of interesting places to visit nearby.

Wow - little Gem of a site

We found this at last minute after our weekend plans were thrown into a spin following bad weather else where in the country.  What a find.  Its a stunning location.  Easy to get to and huge.  Great walking around the site and a good selection of eateries in walking distance.  Only small complaint was the grass was a little long but talking to a regular, who was onsite, we learnt that this is not normal length.  We will be going back.

Peace & tranquility

We stayed for 1 night about 2 weeks ago. The site is very basic but is level and there is plenty of space. The grass was a little on the long side but not a problem as it was dry during our stay. There is a pedestrian public access to the driveway leading from the site entrance, along the perimeter of the site leading to the canal. The footpath was quite well used (it was the weekend). The site is directly adjacent to the canal. The Bridge pub is a 15min walk along the canal. It was very busy (sunny Sunday lunchtime). The village of Bishop Cannings is pleasant with another pub and a magnificent church. The beauty of the site is the peace and quiet, the views of the Downs and the position next to the canal. We will definitely return for a relaxing night or two provided it is dry.

2nd stay

This is our second stay at this peaceful site. For us it is perfect. Just open gate with code as instructed over phone when booking, drive along drive, park where wanted and put the kettle on. The bins are located at Farmhouse and were easy to see and postbox for leaving monies at end of stay was obvious to spot. We will definitely be back.

I had no problems

I chose this lovely cl because of the beautiful location I thought the locked gate was a good idea and had no problems opening it. I did not think it was to expensive, worth it just for the views and peace,I knew it had no hook up before I booked and did not mind taking my rubbish away with me.A very nice walk along the towpath to the bridge pub for a lovely meal. Did not meet the owners but does that really  matter. hope to return soon.

Too expensive and no rubbish bins.

We have been to this site twice, both for a longish stay. As there is no hook upn and not even and rubbish bins we are a bit disappointed. We ended up carrying our bags of rubbish around in the car, hoping to find a place to empty them. We have never met the owner as you just leave the money in a box on a wall. Also on our last visit, the gate had dropped on it's hinges so much that it was very difficult to close. The site was easy to get to once you had got the gate combination fed in and pressed the little release button but there was no welcome. One person on the site had great trouble getting in as they were given the combination but not told of the little black button on the end of the lock. Yes, we would go again but would expect to see some improvement.
