Lovely site and location

Excellent welcome from publican, the site is part sloping and as it was raining some of the pitches were not advisable without a 4x4. Apart from that it is a lovely site and the pub’s food is excellent. If you can take an additional power lead it might be advisable if the site is busy or it’s been wet.

Nice site in pub grounds

Just 5 pitches in a large field with good hook ups. Nice basic village pub on site and good village shop close by. Access via quite long narrow country lanes. Lorries and buses had to back up to find passing spots several times. Some nice walks near canal and fishing lake and plenty of lovely places a short drive away. Grass pitches a bit sloping could be tricky in wet weather but well spaced. TV reception poor. A nice no frills site for a short stay and not expensive. Would happily came again sometime.

Our second Home!

We love it here! Canal, pubs, town and countryside - you have access to it all. It will be one of our regular stays.

.....and relax

Great site for a get away, at any time of the year. We were there in March, wet a lot of the time, but good grass pitches with EHU. Toilets good, water and chemical disposal, plus bonus of a utility room for washing up. Walked and cycled direct from the site. Excellent base for visiting the many prehistoric sites in the area (long barrows galore, Silbury Hill, Kennet Avenue, The Sanctuary, Overton Barrows, and Avebury). Good canal walks either east Honey St and Pewsey, or west to Devizes. Pub great for atmosphere, food and drink.

Great find..

Nice open site with easy access to good walks. Friendly locals and lively pub. The pub food was excellent as was the beer. Would love to return…don’t change a thing.

Absolute bliss

What a lovely find. Peaceful and quiet. Close to canal for walking or cycling and attached to the pub. Lovely big field so lots of choice (although the hook-up points were a bit limited.) it can get a bit boggy in the winter, so beware. But generally lovely. The field is more or less an extension of the pub garden which is very handy. Staff were lovely and the evening meal I had was superb. Unfortunately, I only had one night but would definitely like to stay for longer. Although some have said dog walkers through the f8eld, I only saw one who was very chatty with me.. the owner that is not the dog! Will be back.

Peaceful site with a great adjoining pub

Our first experience of a CL site, and it’s going to be difficult to beat! Lovely quiet site with EHU, water and Elsan point together with very clean toilet. Very friendly welcome from the young staff in the adjoining pub and top quality food at reasonable prices in a very Covid-aware environment. A small community shop in the village can provide all the basics. We cycled on the tow-path for about an hour to Devizes and then a short distance on to the engineering masterpiece of Carn Hill Locks. (Very nice pizzas in the adjoining pub). A great couple of days, notwithstanding some gloomy weather and, at £15 a night, still excellent value for money compared with the rates being sought by some other sites in this extended, staycation season.

plenty of space, but dog-walking

This is a huge field, so perfect for our 2 sons to be able to run around and kick a ball/throw a frisbee without the worry of hitting caravans! Layout not overly clear on arrival (and told that 2 caravans parked at the side and 3 at the bottom....to me the bottom was not where we were supposed to park!!!!! Also, were not totally sure if we were right as the field sort of runs into the car-park/pub outdoor seating area! Lots of flies (storm flies due to the weather, but also loads of fly-type flies). Loos functional and clean. Pub lovely, and had a fabulous meal there. We had to leave a day early due to the forecast of high winds, but were not charged for the extra night, which was decent. Only major concern were the number of locals walking their dogs, many of which not on a lead, and their mess not always removed. Field on a gentle slope (although much steeper where we chose to go!!!!), so levelling required!

Is this a CL or a village green?

The site is in a fairly large sloping field, but there is no fenced off designated area for the sole purpose of Caravan Club members, the pub garden & car park run into the caravan area seamlessly. I thought a separate, designated area was a requirement for CLs. A footpath runs through the field and caravan site. Dog walking and villagers exercising their dogs off-lead, throwing balls etc. were seen regularly during our four night stay. Dogs off-lead are in breech of the Club rules for CL sites. We had booked for seven nights in July. However we cut it short due to the following two events; On Friday late afternoon, a marquee was unloaded and erected on two caravan pitches and then later moved into the pub garden area. Naturally we asked what was going on. My partner was told that there was a 26 mile charity walk starting and finishing at the pub the next day with a hog roast afterwards, but it would have no impact on us at all. We were woken the next morning at 6.30 am when people started arriving for the walk. They all came by vehicle and parked in the field where our caravan was. Approximately 40 door-slamming cars. When I looked out of our window, the site had been turned into a car park!! The “Finish” line was erected between two of the caravan pitches. Obviously we have no issue with charity events, but we should have been informed about this when we booked the week before our arrival. When we asked why we hadn’t been warned, we were fobbed-off and told that they did not know it was happening! That afternoon, one of the villagers who we regularly saw exercising his dogs off-lead, allowed one of them to urinate over our hitch lock cover, water hog handle and water pipe. We were in our caravan at the time - I heard a man’s voice call his dog, looked out of the window and just saw the dog’s tail, I assumed the dog was just sniffing around & didn’t go outside to check. The man walked over to our caravan, took hold of the dog by the collar and led him away from our caravan without saying a word to us. It was only much later on that we realised what his dog had done. It caused us much distress. The pub landlord was apologetic and helpful enough. When I suggested that the dog walker come and clean the mess up, he offered to do it himself & made a thorough job of it. The site seems to be plagued by flies. I am not sure whether this is is due to the adjacent fishing lake hidden behind dense bushes & trees or the porta-loo storage area next to one of the pitches. Quite frankly I am amazed and very disappointed that this site has been approved by the Caravan Club. It’s a great shame because the site is situated in a lovely rural area and you can’t hear any traffic noise, which is a rarity!
