Lovely site but better communication needed

I stayed at Mill House CL for three nights from 23/07/20 to 26/07/20. The site is neat and well maintained with pretty flower beds and mature trees and shrubs around the perimeter and views over the surrounding countryside. I received a warm welcome from the owners Anne and Colin and a small typed note that they have suspended general rubbish collection but would collect clean recycling. I asked Colin what I should do with my general rubbish and he suggested I take it to the tip, a round trip of 20 miles. As I was staying in a motorhome and had intended to just walk and cycle from the site I said it wasn't an acceptable solution, neither was the suggestion I keep my rubbish in my van for the duration of my stay in 25+ degrees heat. Anne came over later and said that rubbish collection had been suspended as she didn't want to have to sort it by hand during the Covid-19 pandemic. I have absolutely no problem with them not wanting to do something which made them feel unsafe but I felt a suitable alternative should be readily available. Anne suggested, and I agreed, that I sort my own rubbish into food waste, recycling and general rubbish and put it in their bins by their house next door to the site. This would not be a workable solution if the CL was full. Also, due to Covid-19, the toilet on the CL was closed. Anne apologised that she hadn't told me all this on the phone when I booked. Luckily I have a toilet in my motorhome but many vans and caravans don't so this could have caused a problem to people arriving unaware of the situation. It’s not a problem if CL owners feel they need to change or reduce the facilities advertised as being available but it would be useful if visitors are informed of this when they book so they know the situation and can make any adjustments. I know site owners have fixed overheads which still need to be paid but I feel that a temporary reduction in the fee of £14 per night would be appropriate to reflect that there are fewer facilities available than normal during this period. This is a lovely site with friendly owners and I would recommend it but they just need to make people aware of any changes to what is advertised at the point of booking. It's too late to be told these things when you arrive. Review written by Ayla Forbes, family member, as I stayed there on my own.

Peaceful and pretty

We love Dorset and were lucky to be able to stay at this peaceful little site at short notice on Thursday 8th August Until Sunday10th August. We were about to start an eight day holiday at the also lovely "Highlands end" site in Eype for a week. Unfortunately high winds were forecast for the start of our holiday so we decided to leave a day earlier to miss towing in the strong winds, we also decided to stay an extra night at Mill House until the winds had died down, before we moved on to Eype. Mill house which is a few miles away from Eype were able to give us somewhere safe and protected to hunker down, we didn't even feel the wind there. We loved this pretty little site, the toilet facilities were very clean and fine for a CL, they added to the charm of the place, a big concrete toilet block would spoil it. The Dahlia's in the garden were an added bonus and beautifully kept, there was no farm machinery around. The owners obviously take pride in their CL site, they were warm, friendly and helpful. Thank you for our stay, we will be back.

In urgent need of updating.

Tucked away site. Takes 7 vans so would be very crowded. Needs a overhaul it’s just not up to standard. We spent a very peaceful time there and had field to self. We can see why they don’t get much trade which is a shame as it’s lovely but with falling down buildings and discarded farm rubbish around doesn’t make it appealing to everyone. Maybe get rid of cottage in garden and out in shower and toilet block to attract motor homes and smarten place up. Such a shame

Response from the Club:

Thank you for your review. The CL Owner has been in touch to address your concerns as they work hard to ensure their site is in the best possible condition for everyone to enjoy. The Site has a separate Commercial site for two more caravans, this is not part of the CL site. The grass is cut twice a week. The only farm item on the CL Site is a tractor which is there to pull out vans when needed but otherwise the site is clean and tidy. The CL owners have taken great care in planting flowers and making the toilet block look more attractive. There are no falling down buildings/ and no discarded farm rubbish on the site so this may be on land that does not belong to the CL Owners and is not visible from the site. We hope this helps address your concerns and we are pleased that you found your stay peaceful.

Peaceful location

Lovely site, Colin & Ann the owners are very welcoming & shared their extensive knowledge of local area walks, sites to see. Toilet facilities are clean & pitches well kept. There were only us & 2 other vans on site so had plenty of space. Enjoyed our stay over Easter weekend very relaxing

Over crowded

This is a beautiful, well maintained site in an ideal location just along the road from Mangerton Mill. However, it is a relative small field laid out permanently for 7 units. This website says, "Two van licenced site adjacent." but this is not the case. All 7 units are in the same field and it feels very cramped. We felt that privacy was at a premium. We were given pitch 7 and our friends were given pitch 6, but if we had had strangers next to us we would have been very unhappy as there was very little space between us.

Lovely CL

Stayed here for 14 nights from 3rd June. Excellent CL in a picturesque area.  Very peaceful. Owners Anne and Colin made us very welcome. Toured around Dorset visiting lots of lovely places.  Found the locals very friendly and helpful and hope to return sometime in the future.

Pleasant site

Can't fault the site at all, it was very peaceful, nicely maintained basic site with friendly hosts. Mangerton mill is a lovely place to visit within walking distance, bridport and west bay 5 mins by car. Highly recommend. The only negative point is nothing to do with the site at all but access to it. If coming in from the A35 westbound from Dorchester do not take a right turn as you come into Bridport, make sure you go all the way in to the roundabout and take a right from there. Our satnav took us down a very narrow lane and over a sharp corner onto a bridge, only just made it through and glad we didn't meet anything coming towards us.

Darzet Delight

A pleasant well maintained CL. Although spacious some parts slope and a couple of strategically placed blocks may be required. The entrance is on a bit of a blind bend and caution is required exiting the site. The quiet mile long lane, although narrow has a number of passing places and one would be unfortunate to encounter a tractor with a trailer full of hay bales or another caravan. There is a chalkboard for arrivals and the owners will generally call during the evening. This part of Dorset is abounding in steep hills and seems to have more single lane roads that the Scottish highlands which made travelling around a trifle tedious.

perfect pitch near bridport

very pleasing location, and a pleasant welcome by Mrs Moore. Facilities are basic, but very clean and in any event caravans and motorhomes are kitted out so site facilities are not so important. Good walks from the site. The directions are spot on but you need to not mind driving down a narrow lane. Luckily, there are passing places and we did not meet another caravan arriving or leaving. We will use this site again.  One point to bear in mind when selecting a pitch is to consider the slope of the land.  We chose the best which was the lowest and thank goodness for motor movers to get us out (although Mrs Moore did say a tractor is available)

Greengrass

We booked to stay at this site with friends and, for some reason, were given pitches on opposite sides, which we thought rather odd.  It was in a beautiful setting but the facilities left a lot to be desired. Unfortunately the lady we had spoken to was away so her husband was the one in charge.  There wasn't any sort of welcome and he seemed more worried about his grass than the happiness of his visitors.. I'm afraid we won't be going back
