Beware of owners dog!!!

If you book this site please beware of the site owners dog!! We ended up at A and E! Owner was very dismissive of incident and told me not to bother with A and E! Incident has left my leg scarred!!! Police involved! We would not stay here again. Would not recommend this site to anyone!

Response from the Club:

We are very sorry to hear of your experience. This CL was closed for a period of time after the incident. However, following the owner carrying out a full risk assessment and putting a range of measures in place the site is now open again for members.

Nice location

Lovely peaceful location, ideal for new forest access, great walk to beach, good walks and cycling around, shops nearby and pub. Very helpful and welcoming couple. Highly recommend.

Another lovely holiday at Oak Cottage

We have just returned from our 3rd holiday at Oak Cottage and have booked for two weeks again next year. Sue is very friendly ,informative and welcoming. The site is excellent value for money,at £14 per night in a pricey area of the country. After many holidays in both the New Forest and Bournemouth areas, we now favour it as our "go to site". It's so convenient for visits to places all along the coast from Lymington to Poole. The Walkford pub is just up the road with seating areas inside and out and reasonably priced. Highcliffe castle on the way to Mudeford has beautiful grounds and a zig zag path down to the beach. All in walking or cycling distance . The owners have done a brilliant job over the lockdown to generally neaten up the pitches and move the water tap closer to the pitches. We love it here !Such a relaxing holiday Thank you Sue & John Glynis and Nick

Another pleasant stay

This is my 5th stay at Oak Cottage and we have always been made to feel most welcome. Ideally situated close to Highcliffe and Walford (within a short walking distance) and a bus route right outside the site entrance to Lymington or the other way to Bournemouth. Booking well in advance is recommended as there are so few other options for miles around. Amenities on site are very clean, tidy and accessible and are all one needs and would expect on a CL site. We look forward to our next visit.

Wonderful site, Back again.

Back to Oak Cottage once more. missed last year due to family illness, but glad to find this CL is still the same. We will definitely be returning. I MUST disagree with the two very negative reviews posted on here recently ! Although the access could be described as "a bit tight", we have a 7.48m caravan and a Land Rover Discovery 4, and get into and out of here with NO problem. And as for crossing the road being "Dangerous"..... well, it is no different to any other road in the UK.! Considering it is an adults only CL, I think the reviewer must have been thinking of another site to reckon the road is dangerous to cross with children ! ???? Noise from the railway is not intrusive, there is an embankment which takes away most of the noise. You may get the odd owl visiting the site at night, but that is one of the joys of countryside living. Anyone who has not been here before, do not let those two negative reviews put you off. Same as anywhere else, if you have not been there before, take your time, get out of your car and HAVE A LOOK before manoeuvering. If you need to, don't feel any shame in asking for help, most other caravanners will be pleased to oblige, everyone had to start somewhere. I tried to post a review on here earlier in the week, but for some reason, it did not register.!!

New Forest Gem

After returning to Caravaning in 2018 we found this lovely CL Site in Walkford to which we have returned to on several occasions since. Its an adults only site situated in a peaceful secluded wooded area which suites us. Entrance to the site is down Holy Lane, there are a couple of large private houses along the lane and although quite narrow we successfully navigated our Lunar Clubman with ease. The owners of the CL are Sue and John who are very welcoming and always ready to provide information for the surrounding area for us to visit. The coastal area of Highcliffe to Lymington are very accessible, as is The New Forest to Bucklers Hard and Beaulie. A short distance from the site is the "Walkford Pub" which offers a varied menu and excellent meals @ 2 for £10.99. There is a bus stop at the end of the lane which you can catch a bus to Christchurch and Bournemouth. I cant speak to highly about this site and we cant wait for our next visit to Oak Cottage.

A great week’s caravanning

After many years of caravanning we visited Oak Cottage for the first time. We hope it won’t be long before we are able to return because we had such an enjoyable time. To have the coastal area between Lymington and Bournemouth so easily accessible was a joy as well as being in the New Forest itself. Speaking to other caravanners on site it seems that many of them choose to stay for extended periods: not surprising really. There was no difficulty in approaching the site from the road and although the railway is nearby it is in a cutting so that when a train goes by it’s hardly noticeable. There are bus stops close to the site entrance and the local pub is well worth the short walk.

Dangerous access to a tiny site

I will start by saying although this was not for us it may suit you well, but, beware. The access is on a hill near a bend and if you are in the same side of the road as the access this is dangerous. Drive on, turn around and come back. The entrance track is small and a tight turn at the end. If you are towing this could be tricky if you don’t get it right first time! Once in you will likely have difficulty turning and siting and of course leaving again. The site owner greeted us promptly and provided information which was useful. The fresh water area was set amongst the owners vehicle parking area so I’m glad we filled up at our last site as this too would have been a problem. This is not a rural site. It is a small area of land hidden between several plots bordered by a railway,a road and the gardens. We had the neighbour doing diy gardening with power tools punctuated by trains passing. The area is very residential but set along a busy road. There likely are amenities nearby depending upon what you want. I cannot comment on these. We like piece, quiet, scenic, privacy etc and this was none of those. Pitches are small patchy rough land bordered by a hacked down verge akin to a railway siding. The pub nearby is very walkable and does pub classics at 2 for £10.95. Also on the busy main road. We did not visit but I suspect most do as it’s very convenient. We did the mile walk to the beach which is fine but it crossed a very busy road with no crossing points. If you are slower on your feet or are carrying kids and kit to the beach this could be dangerous too. The beach walk was lovely with path options, the castle etc. This may be a good site for local amenities but there are so much nicer sites to visit. I would recommend that you look around a little further.

Response from the Club

Many thanks for leaving a review. The CL Owner has been in touch as they work extremely hard to ensure everyone has a wonderful time at their site. The beach is through a wood and a mile walk. There is one road to cross but they have never had members raise any concern with this previously. The site is Adult only so no risk of Children crossing the road from the site. The bus stop is 100 yards away.

We have also spoken to the CL Advisor who has advised there should be no issues with spacing or turning and that the site is very popular with many returning members.

The site is located on a listed lane which serves 4 to 5 properties. The lane is not the CL Owner’s responsibility as the residents in the lane are responsible for their own hedges/fencing and also verges. Please be assured that the hedges do not obstruct any view on either entering or leaving the lane. The bridge has recently been inspected and cleared of vegetation by the appropriate authority and is their responsibility. In the past, signs have been removed from the end of the lane after approximately 1 week. Please be assured though detailed directions are in the Club Sites Directory and Handbook and on the Club website so the site should not be difficult for members to find.

Nice CL, but...

We have a 2.5m wide 8m long twin axle caravan. Long narrow lane to the CL and on arrival at the gate we were unsure whether we would have enough room to be able to turn into the CL. I had to move forward inch by inch to make sure that we could turn without the rear end hitting the electric gate. Once on site we found that we needed to do a U turn and could not however using the motor mover we were able to site the caravan. Site is very nice but a pity about the railway line nearby which woke us up at about 5am. Trains about every 15-20 minutes. The CL itself is very nice and back to nature. On leaving we had the hassle of getting out the gate and again it was a case of moving forward inch by inch to get out. If you have a twin axle especially a wide one be very careful if using this CL. We do recommend the CL but not for those with long caravans.
