An interesting place,no need to have worried

We needed to stay in Dewsbury for a business meeting. We were concerned about some of the reviews, but there was no need to have been . You drive through an industrial area, but but it the site itself is clean, and the marina and narrow boats, with people fishing added interest and a different view. The pub was not noisy, just the sound of happy families chatting and it was bank holiday Monday. The pub was very clean, and basic withe a friendly approach very good value food. We would be happy to stay again if we were in that area.

Not as previously reviewed

Reading the previous reviews we were prepared to have a look and run. No need, yes it is in the middle of an industrial area, the houses overlooking are 200 meters away, the pub is upstairs reasonably priced and the price of the pitch includes EHU. Being white British felt completely safe and not a bit of dog phoo to be seen. It is a 5 pitch CL site at the edge of a marina so you are next to people living on canal boats who we have always found to be, like us, chatty and helpful. We accept this location is not for everyone but with parking, electric, washing machine and dryer, shower and toilet, elsan disposal and fresh water fill up it works for us.

Not clean or quiet

This site is in an industrial estate and constantly visited by noisy boy racers. There is almost constant back ground noise from the pub factories/warehouses and the busy main roads surrounding this site. The toilets are old and not clean, there is also no running hot water and the cold is just a trickle. The chemical waste point is disgusting and I don’t think it had been cleaned for some time when I used it. It also had no running water or soap at all. There was dog poo around the pitches and there was no waste water point so people were just throwing their waste water either on their pitch or on the grass around the site. I certainly would not visit here as a holiday and most definitely would not bring children.

Not the "hidden gem" we had read about

We arrived late evening to this site, which we had booked just as a quiet stopover. We tried to close our eyes on the drive in but it is always hard to unsee things. The area has a sense of foreboding about it which didn't improve as we drove through the pub car park to the wharf. Yes, there are some older mill buildings and the wharf was crammed with longboat but the groups of teenagers watching us park up was off-putting to say the least. I got out of the van to hook up and the first question I asked my wife was if I should put on the security door lock while I was out of the van! The site is an extension of the pub car park and the hard standings are adjacent to the footpath around the wharf so there is public access adjacent to your outfit. There was no sign of the owner and I counted 7 piles of dog poo on our actual hard standing. The ehu cable was put away and we drove off in a hurry. I am sure it depends on the time of day/which day/time of year you arrive, but this was not for us.

CAMRA Cask ale pub campsite

We stayed here for one night while visiting the nearby Hepworth gallery in Wakefield. On arrival we received a friendly welcome, we had a good hard standing pitch right on the waters edge and the on site pub is fantastic. Definitely going to stay again.

oasis in heart of town

As previously said the industrial approach is a little off putting but once there you soon become absorbed in the marina life.We have just spent 4 nights their. A little noise from the on sight pub but the convenience of having it their overrides it. The beers are outstanding. Great off road walking from site into Dewsbury and neighbouring towns which was great news for our spaniel

Pub & canal site

Spent 6 very enjoyable nights at this site recently. The owner at Saville Town Marina was very keen to send us photos of the site before we set off. He was also keen to assure us that although the site is accessed via an industrial street it is an attractive site. We assured him we'd seen the photos and read the reviews and knew what to expect. The photos tell the truth; this is an attractive site. A small marina with well maintained narrowboats moored up. A very pleasant pub serving well-kept beers. We visited 5 out of the 6 nights we were there and every night the beer was exceptional. Yes, the industrial street is a bit grubby but once on site you forget they are there. The old Victorian factory buildings wouldn't look out of place in the Stroud Valleys and that's what you see from your 'van. The more modern built units are out of sight. From here we visited Wakefield (Hepworth Gallery), Leeds, Saltaire. NT Nostell Priory, Dewsbury itself. Could have done more walking locally but simply ran out of time. It's amazing how stunning some of the local towns are. You can appreciate their wealth back in the day. Lovely old Victorian buildings waiting to be cleaned up. And Dewsbury is starting to do that now with Heritage Funding. Appreciated the blunt advice in the loo "Washed your hands ? Cleaned the sink ?" Hope you enjoy as much as we did.

A different CL with lots going for it

We arrived at the weekend, no one there to book in with but a man on a boat moored in the marina gave us some info. We were surprised that the marina is in the middle of a very scruffy industrial estate, rubbish laying in the street. The marina is alongside a pub that was a bit noisey on Saturday night with a live band ( our sleep wasn't helped by the people who had been on the site who packed up at about 0500 and were shouting to each other as they packed up). The rest of the time the pub was busy (it was the beautiful few days in February) during the day but settled down at night. The pub serves some great beers, real cask ales, food wasn't up to much (finished at 1800). The pub is very dog friendly. The walks we took along the canal wasn't particularly beautiful with a cement works but really easy with our dogs and we could have walked miles. There are toilets there but it's a bit basic (but what do you expect from a CL). The manager was really casual, we went to find him on Monday morning to pay and check out, really friendly and relaxed. The location is really handy for visiting so many locations including Leeds. We found a great place to eat in the town (Dewsbury Delights) a fish and chip as well as curry shop, the largest Naans I've ever seen, tasty and good value. I'm not sure we would re visit the site but it's very useful and worth a look at for anyone.

An Oasis within easy reach of Leeds

Savile Town Wharf Marina is a jewel in West Yorkshire. We were a little dubious as we approached the site as it’s surrounded by mainly bed factories and UPS and bus depots, but as we turned into the site evertthing changed. The site is within the Dewsbury arm of the Calder and Hepple canal and is all on flat grass. The owners worked hard to fit us in an short notice for a 2 night stay visiting family in Leeds. On site is a great pub, the Leggers, which sells a wide range of cheep beers. Although the pub itself is upstairs, the toilets, showers and lots of benches are on the ground floor. There’s also another toilet block at the other end of the car park which were very clean. There is a 24 hour ASDA around 10 minutes walk away which is great for stocking up on provisions. A further 10 minutes uphill is Dewsbury Train Station from which it’s easy to get into Leeds in 10-15 minutes with return trains running up till 23:30 and are around £6 return. Good value for money, we’ll be back soon and recommend to all
