Relaxing getaway

We have just returned from a couple of nights at this CL, having experienced a relaxing short-break on the borders of Herts, Essex & Cambs. The all-hardstanding pitches are almost perfectly level, so no messing with levelling blocks - what a bonus ! The availability of mains electric & water on each pitch is a real bonus. We were the only unit on the field for the 2 days we were there, so it is difficult to comment on the size of the pitches. Although previous reviews have said that they are too close, my impression was that they were no closer than the Club site at Ashridge Farm, where we store our van. The owner, Michael Payne, was very welcoming and gave us useful local information (takeaway fish & chips on Tuesday evening from the Axe & Compass for £6.50 - delicious !) We have taken to trying to have a 2-night getaway every month in our caravan, since joining the Club just over 12 months ago. In this time, I have favoured CL's rather than Club or Commercial sites for their peace & tranquility. At a distance of less than 20 miles from the storage facility this was a real gem. Whilst it is one of the more expensive CL's we have visited so far, our view is the avoidance of regular refilling of Aquarolls because of the mains water, is worth the minimal cost ! If you are a particularly light-sleeper, the flight path from Stanstead, if they are taking off to the west, may cause you a slight problem. For those of us well used to living near to airports, it was hardly noticeable. If you stay on Tuesday, Saffron Walden market is wort a visit - not the biggest outdoor market, but the town dates back to the 1100's and is very quaint. Access into & out of the farm is via an electric gate which should sense your vehicle appraoching . . . . . . if it doesn't and refuses to open, then . . . . . go to the faded red switch in the yellow housing on the side of the gates nearest to the barns & inside the farm and . . . . turn it off & on again. This classic electrical-device-fix worked perfectly for us !! A lovely area to visit with lots of delightful villages and thatched cottages - will definitely return.
