Well spaced pitches, good views, good for independent types

Just finished a 9 night stay at this site. Lovely setting, great views and well kept (although grass clippings not collected so you track them in to awning and collect them wheeling water barrels over grass). Not sure why there's a 3 night minimum stay as there were empty pitches whilst we were there and not far from the main A68 to Edinburgh/Darlington so would be good overnight stop. Maybe owners don't have time to field additional enquiries/admin shoter stays might mean. You pitch on any available pitch and take your own electric reading on arrival and departure. 10 units per night included and additional payable on departure at cost (we didn't need heating on so were well within limits). You're unlikely to see the owners who both work and there's no information hut or any leaflets on walks, places to visit, pub recommendations, locations of supermarkets, doctors, vets etc. Not a problem for us as we are Internet savvy and happy to do research. The owner did kindly print a document I needed to sign and post after I emailed and asked so they're available if you need them. Uphill slog from lower pitches to water and waste disposal so maybe not suitable for all. The tap is the slowest we've encountered this trip. We laughed as one chap would bring up a stool and newspaper and sit and read whilst his barrel filled. Pitches are well spaced and plenty of room for unit, awning, car and sit out and all pitches got sun or shade all day on one side of van or the other. We did find the road which is only a C road considerably noisier than we expected so it must be used as a cut through and lots of trucks and boy racers starting at sbout 6am (did quieten in the afternoon before evening rush hour). We were on the closest pitch to the road so it may be less noticeable further down the hill. Some noise from adjacent cement/tarmac quarry works. Lots of lovely places to visit in the area, Eildon Hills, Wallace Statue, Scott's View, Abbotsford, Dryburgh and other abbeys. Some lovely walks and wild swimming of river Tweed and Melrose, Kelso and Selkirk also nice. Rally lovers might enjoy proximity to stages of the Jim Clark rally. There is a farm track adjacent to the site where you can walk dogs but I did encounter traffic a couple of times so be careful. My older arthritic collie also struggled on it as it's rough stone. It does turn into a grass track after the farm turnoff but it was pretty overgrown/unpassable so didn't venture too far down it before giving up. All in all we had a relaxing time helped by excellent weather and it was good value for money.

Minimum nights stay applies

Having read reviews and decided to book last minute there is a 3 night minimum stay. Hopefully next time I'm in the area I can try this site with good reviews.

Really nice site that deserves excellent rating

😁Re-reading the reviews when we had been at the site for a few days and they do reflect the various aspects of the site very well. 🚴‍♂️Good for cycling and places to visit. Feeling of space and open air. 👍🏽One of the best CLs we have been to.👍🏽 It is an excellent place that even when paying the extra money over the included 10kwh per day limit was only about £20 total per night (pretty average usage in a cool May). So much better value than the £36+ you would pay for the Caravan/Motorhome club site in Melrose. And so much nicer and quieter. 👍🏽The owner (Pam Spink) was super helpful on arrival and the site is really well maintained. 🐏Views are lovely. 🚗Passing whoosh of cars on the Melrose to Kelso road is not really a bother since traffic is so light. Would come here again. Excellent place.  📶Mobile signal for EE really fast and Tesco (O2 network) ok.  Recommended!😉😁

First 10 KwH Electricity Free

We originally booked for 2 nights - but in the end extended it to 4 as the day after we arrived it rained constantly. Pam informed us when we booked that the price was £18pn - and that each pitch had an allocation of 10 KwH of electricity per day, electricity used over and above would be charged at a rate of 0.29p per unit. Pam emailed us all the site details plus method of payment. We duly paid - got our confirmation and arrived after a day visiting Melrose Abbey (free parking past the rugby club) and Abbotsford House (parking charges apply). We were offered a free tour of Melrose Abbey by a local volunteer. Highly recommend - infact all the abbeys (Melrose, Kelso, Jedburgh and Dryburgh are worth visiting (all half price at the moment due to the risk of falling masonry). On arrival at the site we found the motorhome water point at the entrance (it could be easily missed). We filled up on our arrival but after that topped up using our watering can, we chose our pitch (slightly sloping), took our meter reading and settled down for the evening. We received an email later that evening informing us that two of the "level" pitches were to be vacated the next day, so next morning we moved our outfit (all the necessary meter readings having been taken). There are some great cycle routes around Melrose (4 Abbeys Cycle Route, Tweed Cycle Route, National Cycle Route 1 as well as the Melrose Cycle Trails - leaflets for all available at Tourist Information Offices). One of the local trails can be joined at the turn off to Scott's View off the main road. We took advantage of two full days of cycling after our day of rain. The views from the site are lovely. Smailholm Tower can be seen on one of the hills in the distance. We cycled to it. The views from the top were amazing - as were the views from the Wellington Monument - which we had cycled up to via a forest trail the previous day. We enjoyed our stay at the CL. The grass was cut on the day after the rain, which meant we were trailing grass into our motorhome for a couple of days - couldn't be helped - but not ideal. There is another water point at the top of the site which is up a slight incline - this is also where the bins and grey/black waste disposal area is situated. It's just a shame there isn't a more convenient place to site a grey waste area for motorhomes, and indeed for caravaners - as I suspect it could be hard work for less able guests to drag their grey waste containers up to the area. We have a couple of buckets in the back of the motorhome, so we had to discharge our grey waste into these and walk them up to the disposal area. We never met Pam, but she did leave a plastic wallet on our motorhome with the details we had to fill in regarding the electricity usage. Fortunately we were well within our 40 KwH allocation for the 4 nights we were staying. The Valais Blacknose sheep in the adjoining field were just adorable.

Excellent CL site with lovely views

Stayed 8 nights at this lovely well kept site. Warm welcome from owner Pam. Lovely views over the countryside. We were 5th unit to arrive on the day we travelled and had to pitch on quite a slope but managed to finally get level. Very good chemical disposal and recycling bins. Quite a steep climb to this area if you are on a lower pitch. Would return, excellent break thank you Pam.

What a great find

Just home from a great stay at Springlee…there is nothing you can fault about this Site. It is a quiet location, there is minimal road noise but you honestly don’t notice it. The Site is maintained to a very high standard with plenty of space between pitches. I would highly recommend :)

Just lovely!

We really enjoyed our recent 5 night stay at this lovely CL site, which is perfectly situated for exploring the pretty little town of Melrose and the beautiful countryside around it. Others have mentioned road noise but we hardly noticed anything...all we could hear most of the time were the birds singing and the sheep in the neighbouring fields. We stayed on one of the two level grass pitches at the bottom of the site...it’s a little way up the hill to take/collect water and waste, but the trade off was the beautiful outlook and feeling of peace and tranquillity. Sadly we didn’t get to meet Pam, the owner, as she was shielding due to Covid, but she does an excellent job of maintaining this brilliant little site, which is a real credit to the CL network.

Smashing CL

Lovely tidy organised CL. Very friendly owner. Just outside Melrose with lots of places to visit. Two hard and three grass pitches, grass mown and collected. Good dog walk from site. Very peaceful. Just a short 3 night stay this time as on our way up to the Highlands. Highly recommended.

Excellent Base For Exploring the Borders

Having dogs, we usually base our choice of CLs on those which have a decent dog walk direct from site. This was ideal in that there is a farm track right next to the site which was rarely used by vehicles so was great for walking the dogs. After a shortish distance the track turned into a nice grassy track by which you could walk to a neighbouring village. We like visiting historic houses and castles so this was perfect being on the Big Houses Trail which were ideally spread around the site so there wasn't too much driving involved. To name a few within easy reach: Floors Castle, Manderston House, Paxton House, Mellerstain House, Bowhill House, Traquair House and Abbotsford House and Estate. All the places welcomed dogs on the estate trails and gardens plus they all had nice cafes for lunch. Visited all the abbeys; Kelso, Dryburgh, Melrose and Jedburgh which also all allow dogs in the grounds and ruins. Leaderfoot Viaduct was interesting and there was a nice walk along the River Tweed. Melrose was a lovely town with a couple of small National Trust Gardens and had a decent Co-Op. Kelso was nice and had a large Sainsburys where we went to buy some shorts as it was so sunny and hot whilst we were there. The owner is very friendly and lent us some walking books which came in very handy as there are so many lovely places to walk in the vicinity. The site is very well kept and had lovely views over farm land. We had the pitch nearest the road so with the windows open you could hear vehicles but it was not intrusive and only busy during commuting times. We would certainly recommend the site and will certainly be going back.

A very Lovely CL

Just spent 6 nights here when the lovely weather arrived in early March 2019. Owner very helpful and site very tidy. With usual facilities clean tidy and easy to use. Lots to do from site, nice walks and plenty of wildlife nearby. Good area to cycle from with a choice of routes from short to all day rides. Eildon hills nearby and very make a very pleasant to walk. Will visit again soon.
