An Enjoyable Stay

We had a really enjoyable stay on this working farm. We had intended staying two nights but stayed an extra night to take advantage of RHS Rosemoor, the Tarka Trail and the nearby towns. We heard bell practice (at least we didn’t think it was the real thing!) but it only added to the charm of the village. We were made to feel welcome and considered it good value for money.

Fourth Stay in three years.

What a great little CL, always a warm welcome from all of the Heddon family. A working dairy farm of which my two children Luke (13) & Aimee (11) have always shown interest in since we first stayed three years ago. Ross lets them get involved around the farm and they love every minute they are helping out. We discover more and more from the area each time we visit, the Tarka bike trail less than a mile from the site has great routes to Barstaple and beyond one way and Torrington and beyond the other. Public buses runs past the site. Great scenery, canal walks, bridges over rivers, woodland walks and cream teas to be had along the way. We love the area especially westward Ho! and Northam Burrows. Ask Ross or Nicky and they'll tell you great places to go, the wake park is great fun and laugh as you climb on the large inflatables or have a go at wake boarding. Always lots to do, supermarkets near by, walk to the village pub " The Cyder Presse" or if your a golfer a few courses close by. Already planned to go back in October and Easter next year. If you want a peaceful stay then this is the place but remember cows do Moo!! Tractors make noise and the church bell ringers do practice once a week..... A+++

Great week in June - recommended

Just returned from a pleasant week at The Barton. A lovely sized CL with views of the rolling Devon countryside. Careful negotiating of the road to the site which is narrow in places (especially if you meet the bus) is required but on the whole easy to find and the wide gate at the entrance is very helpful. We arrived Saturday and following Ross' instructions pitched up. We took the last available pitch (nearest the gate to the toilet/recycling bins) but if you have a choice, choose another as so many other campers crossed through our pitch en-route to the loo. The site is level and has hardstandings, plus some grass pitches in an adjacent field. All have hook up and some have picnic tables. Recycling bins are provided and the usual facilities, plus a toilet ensure that you have all you need for a pleasant stay. We cycled on the Tarka Trail most days, the access just 1/2 mile from the site, visiting Great Torrington, Bideford, Instow and Barnstaple. We liked the route towards Barnstaple best and just loved Instow for the beach, the quaintness and the Hockings ice cream (made locally in Appledore). We also visited Clovelly, Westward Ho!, Appledore, Woolacombe, Ilfracombe, Croyde Bay and Tintagel Castle (over the border). The local pub is lovely and sells locally produced beer and cider and produces a lovely cream tea. They also provide home cooked food but were fully booked so we were unable to try it. Bideford is lovely, with plenty of places to eat, although we preferred the eateries at Westwood Ho! Bell-ringing practice at the adjacent church is 'interesting', and the watching the cows coming in for milking from the hills was really charming. We would definitely recommend The Barton and will definitely stay again if in the area. Ross and family were a joy to speak to, very welcoming and accommodating. We did notice a high turnover of visitors, mainly with motorhomes - we were the only visitors to stay the full week. Just to add, children and pets are all welcome.

A Week at The Barton

We spent a fab week at this lovely CL at the beginning of June, and I could wax lyrical about it, but most of it has already been said in previous reviews. The last half mile after leaving the main road does need care especially at the bridge, but site entrance is fine. The site is lovely and we had a warm welcome from Ross and family. Pitches are well spaced and fairly level hardstanding. We found Instow beach to be dog friendly and very popular. We walked and cycled some of the Tarka Trail which can be accessed at the bridge near the junction with the main road orTorrington, where you can park for free. The tourist information centre in Bideford can be recommended, the lady there was extremely helpful. If you are looking for a CL in North Devon give The Barton a try, I don't think you'll be disappointed, we will certainly return when next in the area. ☺

What a place to spend a few days .....

We've just returned from a 5 night stay at his wonderful CL. If you are looking for a peaceful, well looked after, accessible, pretty CL then this might be for you. From the moment we drove through the front gates to the moment we left we loved this site. You can enjoy the tranquility of a proper farm site, watch the cows amble down the hill twice a day, watch the rabbits playing in the adjacent paddock, while buzzards soar over the woods opposite. At night its dark, you can see the the stars, and its so quiet. Of course that means you hear the dawn chorus ... maybe a little earlier than you're used to!! Ross has created a beautiful place to spend a few days. A new toilet and chemical waste disposal has been added along with a convenient recycling point. He keeps the grass cut nicely and there hardstanding as well as grass pitches. I'd prefer to keep this place a secret so we can always get in when we want to return but that would be unfair to Ross who has clearly worked so hard to create such a great caravan site. If you like CLs, you'll want to give this one a try. Its without doubt amongst the very best we've stayed at.

Wedding site!

We were meant to be staying at another site but the ground was too soft and thank God it was as we found a real gem in the Barton. We needed somewhere near to bideford as we were getting married there and what a location this is. Beautiful picturesque village, ideal views for a few wedding album shots!!peaceful, rural and relaxing cl with hardstands & electric hookups.Ross was very friendly & helpful whilst still running a busy working farm. He told us about the local pub, which is where we ended up for our wedding meal, excellent food, gorgeous cider & all great value too. Thank you all for making our special day even better! & even better( as if we need an excuse) we can return at least once a year for our anniversary!! We will be back.

Gorgeous CL

This is a gorgeous CL, set in a small Devon village. Each pitch on the main CL has hard standing, and plenty of space. There is a field next to the site which can be used as an extra area where there are additional grass pitches. It is next to the village church, and has views over the Devon countryside. It is a very peaceful site, and even though it is a working diary farm, there is no excessive noise except for the mooing of cows - what would one expect from a diary farm!!! The owner is pleasant and helpful, and is around if you need advice or information, other than that he leaves you in peace, just what a good CL owner should be like. The weather wasn't good when we were there is September, but we found plenty to occupy ourselves for a week. Rosemoor is a short drive, which is superb if you like gardens. An additional bonus is the Cyder Presse pub in the village, which has lots of cyders, good local ales and excellent value food, and is just a 10/15 minute walk.

Good central location for sight seeing

This CL is actually 2 CLs next to each other, 5 vans per field. Water & disposal close by. The road into the farm is single track, and its quite a tight turn to come out of the field, so if you have a large outfit be careful. Good central location in north Devon - Ilfracombe 50 mins, Bude 50 mins, Barnstaple 30 mins, clovellly 50 mins. Site nice & pretty location behind village & next to church on a working dairy farm. Who knew dairy cows were so noisy & loud! Great site if you don't mind being woken early by cows & quads & the smell of fresh manure, haha! Pub in the village, the Cyder Presse, with friendly landlord Nigel with good music & many ciders. Food available wed-Sunday. Good Thai restaurant the Torridge inn in Torrington only 10 mins away.

Pleasant

Only had one night passing through but would love to stay longer another time as this was a very nice site. We had a hard standing pitch and each has its own picnic table in this field. Probably worth having a small trolley to take the porta potti to the chemical disposal point.. Very convenient for Biddeford. Appledore and Instow. We also picked up the Tarka trail in Biddeford for a bike ride. Ross and his wife were very friendly.
