Wonderful CL

What a great find this CL was.We received a warm welcome from Paul, and Frank the resident Labrador. While setting up Paul kindly offered us a cup of coffee, which we drank whilst talking to Mary, who told us all about the local area.Nothing seemed too much trouble, and we were made to feel most welcome. We did not meet Penny for a couple of days, however when we did meet she could not apolgise enough for not seeing us.Penny offered local knowledge, access to walking maps and gave good advice as to local attractions, pubs etc. There is an on site information room, which is full of leaflets, books etc.Although we were the only ones on site,we certainly did not feel alone. We returned to our pitch one day to find that Mary had left us a jar of locally made jam, along with a note and message from Penny. There is a gate on site, that leads into common land adjacent to the CL,which is wonderful for walking.I notice that some reviews have mentioned traffic noise from the road, however I can honestly say that it did not bother us at all.We mostly heard bird song in the daytime, and the local owl at night. All in all we enjoyed a fantastic week at The Firs, and will definitely be returning in the not too distant future.A massive thank you to Mary,Penny and Paul, who even gave us a lift to a local walking spot, which was most appreciated. The CL is a credit to you all.

Ideal Site

This is an ideal site for exploration of the Forest of Dean and surrounding area. Excellent communication with owner whilst organising our stay and prior to arrival. A warm greeting by friendly owners on arrival with a very welcome mug of tea while we were setting up. Everything you would like to expect from a very good CL. Easy approach and access, excellent hard standing pitches, under cover chemical disposal point, also site loo with wash basin and a tourist info summer house packed with lots of leaflets and comfy seats to sit down. Even a lockable shed to store your bikes. Plenty of local wildlife, especially birds to be seen on and off site. The nearby road was a little noisy at rush hours but we certainly didn't notice any noise at other times during the day or at night. Plenty of local places to eat / drink. Definitely hoping to return next year along with our bikes for a more detailed exploration of the forest.

Short Stay

Arriving late with darkenss falling we were grateful for the friendly welcome and the tea that we recieved from The Firs Team. This included getting our motorcycle off the back of a damp trailer as the drizzle fell. There is a door from the site into the coutryside and with some simple directions from Paul that took us off for a bit of a hike when the rain finally stopped. Lots of interesting things close by, not that we did any of them, we rode off to Monmouth and Ross On Wye for a wander around the towns. Nice site, good facilities friendly people.....what's not to like??

A fabulous find

A fabulous, adult only site, not that we mind children as we often have the grandchildren with us, but nice to have that tranquility when we don't and it is just heaven for my husband and I, more so me as I don't like dogs so this is just the most perfect site. The warmest of welcomes on arrival and as all other reviewers have said, 'nothing is too much trouble'. More and better facilities here than on most other CLs we have stayed on, with even more underway when the toilet and shower is finished, hence we have stayed twice and although almost exhausted things to do in the area, we will still think to go back as the site and owners are just so lovely, welcoming and friendly, can't praise them enough. Ensure you take the post code from the Caravan Club site listing and not from searching Google as there are a few other sites called the Firs locally and you don't want to be taking your precious van along some of those lanes as we made the mistake of doing, my mistake not my husband's as he is keen to remind me. A completely fabulous find!

Warm Welcome

On arriving at The Firs we given a very warm welcome and felt very much at ease. This is fantastic place to stay and our hosts Penny and Paul were very knowledgeable and showed us plenty of things to do in the immediate area. A new toilet block was currently being finished off and if you have bicycles there is a secure lock up to keep them secure whilst you are out and about. This is an ideal place to stay if you are exploring the Forest of Dean and there are plenty of places to eat in close proximity. We will definitely be going back in the near future and “Penny - thanks for the lovely eggs”

A gem of a CL!

Great CL near Coleford and on top of the Clearwell Caves - you will not get a warmer welcome anywhere - nothing too much trouble and the offer of a cuppa on arrival. Highly recommended. We'll be back!

Wonderful, Welcome, Well situated site, plus more.

Firstly, thank you to Penny, Mary and Paul for a lovely Stay. We are so happy we found this site. We live near the peak district in Derbyshire so it’s a trek but well worth it. So much so, we have been back twice more and if we get the chance this year we will again, if not a visit next year. Access and set up: Easiest CL site we have accessed over the past 3 years, you don’t need a motor mover to get in this one! Site and pitch: The site is spacey with gravelled hard standing with well-kept grass areas, pitches are surrounded by trees, which is fab if you’re a bird lover. The site is clean and well maintained. It feels very private, peaceful and safe. We needed to use a one levelling wedge, so take some with you. There’s access from the site to common land which we enjoyed walking. Very pretty. We like to BBQ when ever possible and sit out under the Stars relaxing with a glass of wine, this site is perfect for that, very little light pollution, quiet Adult only. Owners: The owners are welcoming, friendly and genuinely want you to have the best stay possible. We have been given a gift every visit, jam, eggs, and lovely Honey. They have converted their beautiful Summer house to a very informative information room which you can sit in if you want. Penny helped us with recommendations regarding the area it was like having an onsite tourist information centre. Area: Sling and Coleford: Plenty of Good food shops, restaurants and Pubs close by, some in walking distance. Outside of this area there are many pubs / restaurants that are a short drive away, We Can recommended the Woodman Inn in Parkend book as busy weekends. Forest of Dean wow! Not only can you walk to places of interest from the site, you are only approximately 10-20 mins drive at most (different directions) away from many attractions. A little bit further you are near to Cities and towns. We love Biking, Walking/ Running in nature and visiting historically interesting areas, this site is situated perfectly for all of this. We recommend the Cannop Cycle centre, good for families and those that want a Challenge or to walk/ run. Why re visit? We have only covered a fraction of what we want to do in this area, this site is a perfectly situated with the bonus of a lovey site and welcoming owners, WIN WIN ! Noisy traffic: Yes, you can hear it at times, if the wind is blowing in a certain direction or time of day when traffic can be busy, the B road is near to site but there are trees in between that seem to block it. The 3 times we have stayed it has never bothered us, we could not hear it when in our caravan or Awning, when sat out the birds were louder, and we live in a quiet cul-de-sac.

A warm welcome

We arrived on this site on 16th August 2018 and on arrival we were met by Penny who gave us both a welcoming cup of tea along with a little pot of jam and half a dozen farm fresh eggs. We stayed on the grass pitch at the top of the hill. We had a trauma with our caravan en route whereby the towing cable had dropped down scraping along the road tearing all the cable which of course meant we had no lights on the van. Pennys other half Paul offered to fix this for us which was such a generous offer. We did not however want to put him out as he looked a very busy man so we got it fixed by a caravan company. All in all a very pleasant stay. The Miners pub just a few minutes walk away served wonderful food and a pint of bitter was only £3.35. For a decent breakfast or lunch we went to the Hopewell Colliery cafe a very short drive away. We also had a decent curry at a restaurant in Coleford called "Cinnamon".
