stunning little find

Just spent two nights here and agree with all other reviewers, what a lovely site, clean, pretty, fab owners and great facilities. Couldn't have been nicer. Great views and clean warm shower room with use of a fridge/freezer. Would highly recommend.

The Perfect CL?

This must be close to the perfect CL. Lovely, peaceful, rural location. In a small pretty village with a pub and a community shop. Great views. Hardstanding with a lovely large field for exercising dogs. Super fast WiFi. The shower and toilet facilities are more like a top B&B than a CL. Really nothing to fault.

What a fantastic site?

Well, what a absolutely fantastic site! Access road are narrow, but if you follow Clare and Colin’s instructions there are plenty of passing places, there instructions are better than the club instructions! On arrival at the site we were served with tea, or coffee and biscuits, very welcome after a long bank holiday Monday drive! Excellent welcome pack. All we needed to know! The pitches are all large hard standings, with water and electric on each pitch. Superb views over the beautiful countryside. As for the shower and loo, well they are better than most people have at home. The information area contains all the leaflets for the area and a book and DVD loan area! The pub next door is due to reopen in the next few weeks! They were taking deliveries as we left, so it cannot be far away! Recycling on site, and a superb community shop two minutes from the site. Once we were all set up, Clare and Colin came down to check all was well, a really nice touch. We were only there for two nights, but are back again in July for a week! When we left, Clare and Colin gave us instructions for the best way out of the site back to the motorway! Again superb ones! Now for the downside ...........Nope, cannot think of anything!

You will be spoiled from the time you arrive.

I have never turned up at a site before and been welcomed with a cup of tea and biscuit by the time we got the legs down on the caravan. We chose the week just after the beast from the east and all the other storms arrived, Clare and Colin were great giving us updates on routes and road conditions right up to the point we left home. We were welcomed as we arrived and shown the pitches available. Then as I say a lovely cup of tea after a long journey was most welcome. The site look out over the country side, bird feeder right in front of us and not a sound to be heard. The facilities are fantastic, clean warm and plenty of room. Every pitch has been levelled and are all now hard standing with its own tap so you are setup in minutes. The village has a community run shop 100 yards from the site, it is run by volunteers and is well stocked with all you will need. The site is well located for seeing all the local attractions. Hard to see how they could make your stay any better, even the free Wi-Fi was great.

Little Country Gem

We have just got back from a very wet, windy, frosty, torrential rain, hail and snow filled week...Oh, and there was sun on one day. However, that did not dampen a very restful week spent on this CL. The shower block that is described as heated (We have stayed on many CLs over the years that claim to have a heated block that are in fact barely above cold) this one really was comfortably warm and absolutely spotless. Attention to detail with hotel folded toilet paper ends and fresh bath mats daily. The dog walk was cut with pathways to meander along, the views are spectacular and far reaching and amazing to watch the changing colours in the landscape depending on the light. The hard standings top notch and well draining. easy to get a good tent peg grip. Locally we ate in the Grove inn (George Nymton) and The Rising Sun ( Umberleigh), both very welcoming of dogs and both with a roaring log burner or two to warm up by. We walked the Tarka Trail at Meeth and walked around Meeth Quarry which was a super walk for dogs and humans alike- Strongly recommend. Colin and Clare obviously take immense pride and want your stay to be a pleasurable one...It definitely was for us and we will be back.

A CL like no other

We’ve been CL’ing for 30 years and have never visited a CL like Uplands before. I booked by phone with Jordan: Colin and Clare’s daughter. Some CLs just take your name, some also take your membership number. Jordan asked for our dog’s name! That’s a first. When we were arrived, we were met by Jordan, Colin and Clare and even though this was our first visit we were greeted like old friends. They could not have made us more welcome. We were given mugs of coffee and biscuits. Wow. They’d also prepared an envelope of information for us including their own printed pages of recommended walks etc. All pitches have views: pitch 1 has the best and pitch 5 the least. We were in pitch 5 and were well satisfied with the view. Our van is 7.25m and slightly too long for the pitch protruding onto the access track so we pitched diagonally across the pitch. Despite the views the CL is sheltered. Storm Brian passed through Devon whilst we were there snug in pitch 5. We had some rain too. Good hardstand pitches and track: no risk of sinking no matter how wet it got. Each pitch has its own tap. They have a spotless info room with book and DVD library and shower room. And what a shower room. It’s like someone’s home. Spotless. Heated. And no extra charge/meter. Back in the info room there’s a fridge/freezer for guests’ use. The names of who is staying on each pitch is written on a whiteboard on the side of the fridge/freezer. Uplands accepts payments by card. Chittlehamholt is on what used to be the main road between Barnstaple and Exeter. Over the centuries new roads have been built and Chittlehamholt has been left as it was: a picturesque village of thatched buildings. It is not served by any A or B road, only minor roads. The route in the Club book involves the shortest amount of minor road, but it does involve a half mile climb up a narrow road without passing places. We didn’t have a problem. There are many alternatives and those who are less happy about narrow roads might want to approach from the south. Colin and Clare have produced a leaflet of routes to and from Uplands so if you have any concerns I’m sure they will be happy to discuss. Once in Chittlehamholt the access to Uplands is easy with perhaps the widest access I have ever seen: you could literally turn an articulated lorry into Uplands. Uplands is a great base for dog walkers. The field in front of the pitches has been cut with a meandering path which is great to exercise the dog as soon as you arrive. There are many footpaths from the minor road in front Uplands including one from the centre of Chittlehamholt which goes through a broadleaf wood and another a couple of hundred yards north of the village which goes through a coniferous wood. The community run village shop is just yards from Uplands. We shopped there exclusively for the duration of our stay. It is a tiny shop yet had all that we needed. We highly recommend Uplands especially to anyone who likes the use of good facilities.

A Great Week - Great CL.

We stayed for a week during June just as the hot weather was starting, what a wonderful welcome from Clare & Colin a hot cup of tea and choc biscuits. The site was very clean with the grass cut regularly with a "wiggly walk in a meadow, as the site is on a hill you get marvellous views across the valley. The shower and toilet was the best I've seen and very clean. Each pitch has EHU and fresh water tap with recycling bins emptied every evening. We will definitely return.

Peaceful rural site, good facilities, very helpful and welcoming owners

Booked this site for 2 nights - easy to find/access, quiet rural location with views over lovely surrounding countryside. Pitches of good size with grass areas and the site has a lovely wildlife meadow part with pathways through it - all you hear is bird song and the occasional tractor - blissful ! Easy access to public footpaths from the site which take you over fields and woodland - ideal for walking and countryside views. Onsite shower/washroom facilities - immaculately clean and tidy. The owners of this site provided a first class friendly, helpful welcome - were available if you needed any help and were lovely to talk to - a very big thank you :) We took 4 large dogs with us and this site is excellent for both people and dogs ! Would definitely highly recommend and stay again.
