Unsophisticated but perfect

This site may not look extravagant, but it doesn't need to be as it has many plus points: it's fantastically quiet despite being close to Sizewell B - we didn't really notice much traffic noise even at shift change; it is 50m from miles of open beach and dunes, so it's perfect for dog owners; the pub is great (although beware - the owners now shut Tuesday and Wednesday) with really good homecooked meals and we found the owners very friendly and accommodating. We walked to Aldeburgh (where a helpful fish seller cooked a lobster for us to pick up on the way back) and another day drove to Sutton Hoo for more dog walks and a spot of history. But the location was the best bit by far.

Practical, quiet site in great location

This site was perfect for us, a campervan with own facilities. With only five spaces, it manages to provide water, cassette disposal, EHU and bins. Loos are available when the pub's open. £20 might seem steep for a pub carpark extension (the site is set above the small carpark itself) but we thought it was good value for this area. We enjoyed a road cycle into Aldeburgh (check out the unassuming Chocolate Teapot Cafe for sandwiches and scones) and lovely beach walks to Thorpeness (on pebbles) and the bird reserve (on beach paths). Very close proximity to the power station added interest rather than hassle. The view and simplicity of the grass setting, plus its position near a road, might not appeal to all but we had no noise problems (including no pub noise when we were tucked up early on Saturday night) and liked the laid-back feel. The Vulcan Arms itself is a straightforward, traditional pub. We paid there on arrival, ate decent food on Friday night and enjoyed very friendly service and free live music from 9pm (an enthusiastic band was playing vintage classics when we were there). The cafe on the beach just round the corner also does a mean breakfast. We would go back.

Enjoyed our stay

Just returned from 2 nights in Sizewell. The location was chosen as it's only 15 minutes from Minsmere RSPB reserve. The site is quite a small area located next to the pub on a raised area of land. It's basic and a bit uneven, but suited our requirements well. There was a little traffic noise at times when shift changes happen at the power station, as it is located exactly opposite the access road to the nuclear plant, but it didn't really cause us any problems. The pub is a decent old-fashioned place, with good beer. We ate in the pub on both nights of our stay, with the Friday night menu being standard pub fare (my wife loved the ham, egg and chips) and there was live music from about 9pm. The Saturday night carvery, however, was simply excellent. Only two meats available (pork and beef) but both were perfectly cooked and plentiful, with a good selection of veg. Staff were friendly, and I think reviews stating the landlord is rude or grumpy are unfair. He's a character with a very dry sense of humour. Just make sure to pay your site fees in the bar when the pub is open and you'll have no problem. We will happily return to this CL!

Perfectly ok

minutes from the beach. although a small collection of houses sizewell gap has a good tea room/beach restaurant and very good public toilets. Dogs welcome in the area with plenty of walking area without causing issues with beach users. The beach is mixture of sand and pebble. Miles of walking area north and south. Pub site is basic, pub garden basic, but water and waste and good electric connection. You can see the sea but admittedly only just. The fee is reasonable. Get a pitch nearer to the sea for less than £20.!!! Pub meals excellent, staff very good. Previous reviews too harsh on working pub. Be friendly and they will return the feeling. Pay at pub as soon as open after arrival and you are left to get on with it! Live music on Fridays.

Fantastic site and location

I have just stayed for 5 nights in my twin axle 8m caravan and I wish I could have stayed longer. The site and location are perfect. You have dog walks on your doorstep, beautiful sea views and coastal paths within 50metres and the loverly pub on your doorstep with traditional grub and ale. The site has electric elevated views and easy access what more could you want. Fussy people may want a manicured lawn, but for me it was location, location location. The owner Trevor is very accommodating and friendly without being intrusive. Can’t wait to return.

Good location

Just back from a 3 night stay at Vulcan Arms CL. The site is less than a 5 minute walk to the beach and lovely walks to Mimsmere & Thorpeness. There is ample space on the site for 5 vans. The pub has good beer & cider on tap and the carvery on Saturday night was excellent. Pub staff friendly. We will be back again soon.

A hugely disappointing CL

This CL is poor for a number of reasons. Firstly the interaction we had with the owner was not warm, we were not welcomed on arrival and for the size and lack of care of the site, £18 does not represent good value for money. It is by far the most expensive CL we have stayed at and the worst. The pub is dark and dingy and I would not care to eat there and the land of this tiny site that struggles to get five vans on with decent space in between, is poorly tended. It is uneven, pot holed and steep to access. Whilst the walks along the coast to either Thorpeness or the RSPB reserve past the Nuclear Power Station are lovely, we would not recommend this site and is not a good fit with the CL reputation held by the Club.

Below average

I chose this site as was close to the beach which it was and the beach is lovely. on arrival I called to say I had arrived and was told to park up. We was not greeted. This is a very small site. I have been on sits 3 times the size of this one. The ground is very uneven and patchy. We had dinner one night in the pub, food was good, took hour and half for mains to come out but we didn't mind that. The staff were friendly and polite too. When we was due to leave I had to call and chase on how to PAY. I was then told on the phone that I should of paid in the pub the previous night, which I was then told I should of paid the night I was in the pub. I was in complete shock of this rudeness. If the owner had greeted us and explained his process etc I would know what to do. I was then advised to post the money through the letter box for a door which was unlocked. This site is not worth £18 a night-you are paying for the location more than anything. I still never saw the owner
