Scruffy

We stayed 2nd to 5th May 2014. This was our first CL and so I hope this is not typical of what the Caravan Club permit to carry their logo and advertising. It has almost put me off of CLs. Directions to site were good and we didn’t suffer the overgrown hedges mentioned elsewhere in the reviews but given the other issues listed below give it a few weeks! The track entrance is rather rutted but frustratingly the owner has the required patch up stones piled up on site but has chosen to sprinkle a few in the pot holes. The grass was annoyingly long as mentioned by everyone else who has reviewed this site and the owner has the required tractor pulled lawnmower but like the track has chosen not to use it, even though he had for the field next door so his microlight aircraft could take off rather noisily every morning. Entry in to the field leads past scruffy derelict buildings, a dumped recovery truck and the loo with chemical toilet disposal (well, sort of- a black bin with the bottom cut out over a sewage pipe!) The loo is actually a dirty shack with an ill-fitting door that is held closed when not in use by a length of rope tethered to a fence, there is no light. We didn’t find a grey water disposal site. Apart from the scruffy farm the surrounding countryside is beautiful and is of course Watership Down country. The Swan pub in the village does great food and smashing real ale. Highclere Castle (Downton Abbey off the telly) and gardens are well worth a visit. All in, I’m amazed that the Caravan Club list this CL on the website. The owner clearly can’t be bothered to run it properly and hasn’t responded to the previous feed back, he doesn’t deserve customers.
