A little peace from the hustle and bustle

I love this site. We've been a couple of times as it's very close to us so ideal for a weekend when you don't want to travel far.  Not ideal for children as not much for them to do but a great dog walk down into the woods. It's also very close to Welwyn Garden City and The Galleria if you want some retail time. Considering where it is I'm amazed how peaceful it is.

Relaxed Weekend

We've just returned from a very pleasant weekend at Commons Wood. The staff were very friendly and helpful, plus were working constantly to smarten up the site. The site has a very comfortable feel as opposed to some sites which are very regimented. There is an excellent area for walking dogs in the adjacent woods which lead off the site entrance. We walked for about an hour on a circular walk on well trodden paths. Considering the location with regard to London, M25 etc. the site is very quiet with the exception of the sound of leather on wood (cricket club next door). Will be back soon to relax once more.

Disappointed

What happened to the nice wardens????? Seems they can't hang on to the good ones!As a storage user at this site and it being right  on our doorstep we had built up a friendly relationship with the old ones and it's nice to start our season every year with a 'checkover' weekend, we love this site Even though it's a little over priced for the facilities I think these need updating ,I guess maybe you're paying for the location, I dont think it's particularly ideal for families with young children the vans are packed in and there's not really anywhere for them to play as such. The new wardens this year seem to have an unfortunate way about them as a visitor to my mothers pitch found out ,maybe that's just their way but it's off putting, such a shame this site needs a good overhaul and to find the'right' wardens and hopefully soon!

Rock Pegs Required for Hard Standing Plots

Firstly this for us was a very good location for visiting London and members of our family. It is usually quite quiet although the adjacent Cricket Club can be noisy if they are having weekend disco parties. The on site toilets were always very clean although the hot water temperature could vary up and down in use. We have visited the site on two occasions using both the grass and hard standing plots. The main annoying problem we found when using the hard standing plots is it is essential you have rock penetrating awning pegs otherwise you will be very frustrated when trying to erect your awning. The other point of note is the access road to the site is quite narrow so be prepared to watch out for oncoming local vehicles approaching.

What is going on?

Have been visiting this site for many years and can't help but notice that there has been a change and not for the better.  There have always been people living on site and going to work, presumably nearby.lately we have noticed a deterioration of standards.  The Grimsby fish live in a motor home and two vans appear in the evening and fish crates are swapped over, that pitch now smells permanently of fish.  The pitch behind us was caravan with vehicle plus trailer full of scrap metal. Another pitch had an ageing Winnebago with copious amounts of rubbish around it.  ,I feel that this is not up to the standards we expect as CC  members and some sorting out needs to be done

Good location.

Nice well maintained and very clean site in a great location for trips into London. Facilities block spotless and nice and warm. Staff very polite and helpful. A little noise from main roads and a few aircraft , but to be expected given the position.

Surprisingly nice location

We visited this site for the first time at the weekend. On approach it appears to be located right in the centre of an urban sprawl with two huge hospital buildings right next door. However, once you get into the site itself you could easily be anywhere bang in the middle of countryside. Aim for a pitch over by the woods (ours was number 68, west-ish facing) and you'll easily be able to ignore the surrounding buildings. We had more birds on our feeder here than any of the other sites we visited on our recent tour including a semi-resident nuthatch who came every morning along with the usual variety of tits and finches. OK, the facilities are looking a little past their best, but are kept spotlessly clean by the single pair of wardens who look after the place and, despite the site being full during our stay, there was never a queue for the showers. I think a lot of folk use the lace as a base for visiting London; we used it as base for doing some very nice walks in nearby villages such as Wheathampstead and Ayot St Lawrence (former home of George Bernard Shaw) and even the areas around some of the larger towns like Harpenden and Welwyn Garden City itself. It's a nice site in a surprisingly pleasant location - never going to win awards for its looks or as a holiday spot, but certainly fine for a short visit to the area.

Could be a lot better

We have stayed at Commons Wood C.C. Site many times. Wardens have always been very helpful. The really hot water is only available in the washing up and laundry facilities. The antiquated showers are abysmal. Poor water pressure and the minimal amount of lukewarm water available even with the control at its highest setting. Just as bad in the disabled facility. Needs updating into the 21'st century A.S.A.P. Do not mention the Wi.Fi. Please do not say that funds are not available!!!!!

Wonderful wardens

We stayed recently for two nights and although our pitching requirements were a bit bizarre nothing was too much trouble for the wardens. It goes without saying that the site was the usual immaculate standard of Caravan Club sites.IHAVE TO MENTION GORDON AS THOUGH OUR STAY WAS A BIT UNCONVENTIONAL HE WAS MORE THAN ON TOP OF THE JOB.THANK YOU GORDON,YOU DESERVE A MEDAL AS BIG AS A DUSTBIN LID.

Lovely - but!

This site was incredibly well kept and the staff were very nice and helpful. So, much credit where it is due.  However, even though there were absolutely no caravans or motor homes in the middle of the site, which was a very large grass area - at least the size of half a football pitch, we were told (politely) that our three grandsons, all under the age of 6 were not allowed to kick a football around, while we were setting up the awning. This alone would prevent me from visiting again. This is a shame, because as I say the staff were on the face of it very pleasant and the site was immaculate.  Regards  John
