Really is a hidden gem

This is a lovely quiet, friendly site with generous pitches. It was our first visit and will definitely return. Whilst on the 'quiet side' of the Lakes, it is well situated to explore the area with easy access to lakes, mountains and the coast.

A lovely spot

We have come to love the 'no facilities' CAMC sites, they are even more peaceful than the regular sites. We came to Dockray Meadow as we wanted a getaway during a brief fine spell and it is near our home in Brampton. We did not move our motorhome during the 4 days of our stay but contented ourselves with local walks, Lamplugh churchyard is well worth some time as is a visit to Cogra moss reservoir. It was also ideal for one of us and the dog to do a little fell walking right from the site, egging a clutch of 3 Wainwrights. The dog exercise area was most entertaining with some agility equipment which our dog didn't totally understand but it gave us a laugh. The site was fairly full but still quiet and peaceful. The limited facilities were fine and Covid precautions were very evident.

Beautiful site in a beautiful part of the world

Recently stayed here for 5 nights on our way home from Scotland. The site is well maintained by the wardens who are constantly working to keep it that way. The covid precautions were the best we've seen on any site we've visited so far. As other reviewers have mentioned there is no toilet/shower block so you need to use your onboard facilities. The service points are well positioned around the site and none are too far to get to. The site is ideally place for visiting the western lakes and coast. Ennerdale, Loweswater and Buttermere are within easy reach but you need to be there fairly early to ensure you can park reasonably close to any walks.

Perfect base for exploring this quiet part of the Lakes

We have been visiting the Lake District for walking holidays several times a year for over 40 years, but this was our first visit during the pandemic and we wanted to avoid the more crowded areas, so we chose Dockray Meadow and it proved to be the perfect choice. It is one of the quietest and most peaceful site we have ever stayed on and is sure to become a firm favourite. Although on the edge of the Lake District, it gives easy access to Buttermere, Crummock Water, Loweswater and Ennerdale and there are some fantastic walks on lesser-known fells without having to use the car. Our particular favourite was Blake fell, which gives stunning views of the higher fells from its modest height. Previous guests have mentioned some difficulty walking around Cogra Moss, which can be reached from a footpath adjacent to the site. Works are being carried out to improve access, including a path around the reservoir which should be completed in time for next season. We also loved the proximity of the Cumbrian coast and we particularly enjoyed a walk around St Bees head, a coastal walk to rival any in Britain. We loved this little site with its many trees and green spaces. The wardens with the friendliest and most hard-working we have encountered and they kept the site immaculate. We were more than happy to use our own facilities, especially during the pandemic and wouldn’t have used a facility block even had one being available The pitches were a generous size and there was more than enough room for our car, caravan and awning. We look forward to returning to explore more of this quiet part of the Lakes.

Quiet but dated and needs investment

Friendly welcome and I couldn't fault the wardens, except for inaccurate information about which service bollards have a functioning TV booster. The site is tired. It has no toilet block, which is fine, nor childrens' play area. Good dog play area. The roads round the site are narrow and really need looking at. The pitches are close to the access road so not all pitches suitable for larger outfots - the wardens are good at keeping a larger pitch back if they are expecting a big outfit but that means those of us in smaller motorhomes have to use small pitches. The hardstandings are mostly very far from level and neeed large levelling blocks for motorhomes. WiFi only available - at cost - in the information room. Really shows the lack of investment in this site - Come on Caravan Club, this is 2020, not 1998. It's a bit of a drive to the more popular parts of the Lake District and there are no views etc on the site. A good CL is better value.

Great little site

Just spent the first week after lock down here and I must say what a great little site this is, quiet and peaceful. Two good pubs about 3 miles away in Ennerdale Bridge served excellent food. Whilst they followed the Covid-19 rules to the letter this did not stop the wardens from being so welcoming, friendly and helpful, they were just top notch.

Dockray delight

We booked 5 nights and picked the best weather week in September. This site is only about an hour and a half from home, middle of our beautiful county of Cumbria and is easily accessible from all directions. We were welcomed by the exceptionally hardworking wardens who throughout our stay were always around the site keeping it well maintained and always had time for a natter. We did a bit of walking as we have an energetic dog who loves the countryside. Unlike previous reviewer, we did find a way to walk the whole way around Cogra Moss reservoir, not sure whether we should have as work was being undertaken by the Forestry but not on the day we chose to do it and we had the correct footwear to ramble across uneven ground. We were disappointed that we didn't see any red squirrels but we heard daily conversations between a couple of owls who are resident in the trees surrounding the site. My only negative was the arrival on the Friday evening of a family who pitched next to us whose children were allowed to kick a ball around, they weren't over noisey but lacked and weren't even considerate about pitch etiquette. The pitches are more over very generous in size but my pitch is not a free for all. My pitch is not a childrens playground. I realise wholeheartedly children need to be outside and allowed to play but this site isn't set up with vast open green spaces for ball games. We will visit this site again.

Very pleasant for walking on the area

We visited for two nights as a short break. The wardens were very welcoming, pitches mainly flat and with pleasant views of the surrounding fells. The dog exercise area is great, with agility equipment provided. We ate out one evening at the Ennerdale brewery, but we had to go in the motorhome because the walk along a busy main road is unpleasant. It is a shame that there is no local pub or cafe within easy walking distance. The site is ideal for visiting Cockermouth, Whitehaven and Keswick. We walked to Cogra Moss but a little disappointed that we could not find a suitable circular route around the moss. I am sure it is possible but we didn't have a map with enough detail on it to work it out. Some of the lake side is privately owned by the angling club so walkers not allowed access. It is worth exploring the history of the area.

Lovely tranquillity site

Stayed here over the August bank holiday. Had a lovely 5 nights here. It is so peaceful and tranquil. You could here the sound of the stream running nearby. We were lucky to have some wonderful weather. It's definitely not for those who are looking for pubs nearby. We didn't see any nearby. The relieve wardens were friendly and always said hello when they saw you. Embeddable water is nearby and is a beautiful place to visit you could walk round the lake for hours. Will certainly visit again next year. There is no play area for children so may not appeal to those who have children. The dog area is good. Defiantly give it give stars.
