Front row entertainment

Stayed here for 7 nights during late June. The wardens were excellent always ready with a smile and advice. The site itself does back onto a road and due to our late arrival we had very little choice but to pitch next to the road. Don't panic if it happens to you there is very little traffic and to be honest we got used to it quickly. A bigger problem were flies (not midges) they did seem worse nearer the road, no idea why, possibly the long grass which borders the boundary fence. Flies aside this is one of those sites with some views out to sea meaning some people are on permanent alert for those with a sea view leaving. It's then a case of who can get that spot first. It's also one of those sites (an increasing problem perhaps) where outfits turn up well before 12 noon (as early as 10.30am according to the wardens) to try and get those perfect pitches. Provides good entertainment but is another example of the rules being for everyone else. Back to the site itself. It is in a glorious location and the sun sets are worth the effort of getting there.

Jewel of the North

We stayed here in early July - magnificent site. I have passed the site on 100's of occasions in the past prior to having a motorhome so knew how popular it was, i stayed in the area as a child so also knew the area. The site is on the edge of Dunnet Bay, a superb sandy beach which is great for kids/families to enjoy. You are a short drive/cycle to Dunnet Head the Northern most point of the GB Mainland. You are also only ~14 miles to John O' Groats which has a passenger ferry that runs day trips to Orkney. Scrabster which has a car ferry to Orkney is also only 10 miles away, a smaller car ferry runs from Gills Bay across to the islands but this really needs to be booked in advance. Lots to do & lots to see, excellent site, great facilities, helpful wardens........not to be missed if you are truly up North.Happy

Fabulous stop on the NC 500

First thing to say is we arrived from a non CC site looking forward to immaculately clean, hot showers, with plenty of room. We were not disappointed! We were pretty tired after the single track roads from Durness; the wardens gave us a warm welcome, were helpful about pitches and were just generally cheery! Pitches felt large and spaced out; many of them afford views over the dunes to the bay. The beach is long and sandy. Perfect for dog walking and building sandcastles. This is a lovely site and worth a longer visit than our overnight stop. Dunnet Head is an interesting side trip and there was plenty of space for motorhome parking when we visited. The gin distillery does do tours - not obvious from their website - but disappointingly it was closed for a private tour when we visited.

Two very enjoyable days

My wife and I had two enjoyable days at Dunnet Bay. The wardens were very friendly. We visited Castle Mey. Dunnet Head is a good place for bird watching.

Worth More Than a Single Night

We booked here for a one night stopover en route to Orkney but the quality and location definitely justify a longer stay. There is nothing around about by way of bars or restaurants so take whatever you require with you. We knew this and called in for tea at a fabulous fish and chip shop in Helmsdale called La Mirage. The site itself is beside a wonderful beach of golden sand and our pitch backed on to the access gate which being dog owners couldn't have been better. The toilets and showers were very clean, the site well looked after and the wardens welcoming despite us sneaking in just before the 8.00pm close. The site was completely full and apparently with the marketing of the North Coast 500 Route this is becoming a regular occurrence, so if you fancy staying here its well worth booking ahead.

Beautiful site

We visited the site only for one night but the wardens couldn't have been more helpful and the site was spotless. Loved the free herbs hung in baskets on the wall and just how clean the facilities were. Will definitely visit again soon. Stunning beach and easy access to Thurso town and John of Groats. Awesome

Britain's most northerly site is also one of Britain's best

We had two marvellous weeks here. It won't suit everyone because of it's remote location but that is more than compensated for of you like peace and quiet. Situated beside a beach which is nearly two miles long, the site is ideal for walking for people and dogs. Nearby Thurso isn't  big but has a Tesco and Lidl and you can get a ferry from there to Orkney. A boat also goes from John O'Groats for day trips. The site is well laid out and Phil and Janet who look after it so look after the user's. The toilets etc are immaculate and they are very helpful and friendly. Highly recommended.

A Caithness Gem

An excellent site. Welcoming helpful staff. Earlier comments about traffic noise totally unfounded - waves breaking on the beach possibly more noticeable but so relaxing. Beautiful clean beaches and you can walk for miles. Plenty to do within walking distance - gin distillery and northern sands hotel restaurant recommended. A trip to Orkney also not to be missed. Would definitely return.

Could be better

We only stayed for one night at Dunnet Bay and I'm glad it wasn't too much longer if I'm being honest. The site is situated near the beach but has a busy A road running behind it, we had a pitch adjacent to the A road and it obviously wasn't particularly quiet. When we booked with the site we were told that we had to arrive before 6pm, I've never had this before on any site but we did arrive by 5.30 and were met by a less than cheery warden in reception, perhaps it had been a hard day. As stated we only stayed overnight and on leaving we discovered that the onsite facilities were being cleaned 15 mins before the stated time, I'm not usually that bothered about things like that but it was just another reason to not be impressed, I'm sure there are lots of happy customers but for me I'll give this one a miss next time.

Lovely location

Just a one night stay but great location beside a long often deserted beach. Our dog loved it as did we. Would be useful if Club updated important information to include opening times of reception. As a previous reviewer noted, it is only open from 9-11 am and 4-6pm so if like us you are in a campervan with no toilet facilities then you can't access the onsite ones until you have checked in and been given your key. Busy A road beside site but quiet at night.
