Overnight Stopover

Stayed here on the way to Plymouth for the ferry - lovely welcome from the warders. American Diner across the road did a decent meal. Weather was absolutely atrocious and the warders were very kind in offering us the chance to stay for a bit longer as we had a fair wait for ferry - recommended.

Great Site

We stayed over for the night on the way down to Devon and Cornwall. Would like to to stay longer next time and explore. The site is lovely and clean and very handy for onward journeys. The American Diner across the road was great and worth a trip to.  Great site thanks!

Don`t Just Stay Overnight

Exeter Racecourse site is one that you could mistakenly think was good just for an overnight stop; perhaps on the way to your ferry in Plymouth or another site in Cornwall. Indeed it is but not exclusively so. We found it a perfect base to explore the region as far afield as Lyme Regis and as near as Exeter itself. There are many places of interest not too far away where you can while away the hours rain or shine. The site itself sit in the `v` between the A380 Torquay road and the A38 to Plymouth; but don`t let that put you off. They are both far enough away so as not to be intrusive and you are screened from them by Haldon Forest. Wherever you pitch you will have good views, some admittedly better than others. The only down side? Weak showers. They are spotlessly clean however.  If you can live with this then this site makes a super base from which to explore the area. See for yourselves.

Good stopover for on-ward journey

Was easy to locate, showers were adequate, not much pressure in the ladies but ok. A small supermarket type thing and american diner a walk away. Friendly relief wardens on site. Thank you

A good stop over

We have now used this site several times as a stop over and it is excellent for that purpose, but beware the turn off from the main trunk road is very sharp and traffic does belt along there! The site is very open and the views over the forest are great. If it wasn't for the road noise from the aforementioned road it would be extremely peaceful. The walks from the site through the forest are easily accessible and if you are happy to drive it is well placed for Exeter and the eastern fringes of Dartmoor. The facilities are limited: 3 showers in the men's but I never had to queue. My shower was hot and a reasonable pressure but I gather that wasn't so in the girls. We like the site, but not for a long holiday.

Stopover

Using this site for a one night stopover on the way to Cornwall was ideal as it was a stone's throw to the A38. I can see why the pitch fees are low though because it did feel bleak and the facilities not what you'd get at say a bigger club site although they were, as always, clean. Other than a lot of space to play in, there was nothing for the kids and only a very modest shop. Again as always, the wardens were very friendly. I would personally only ever use this site as a stopover and wouldn't consider it for a longer stay.

Ideal stopover

Used site to break journey back to Midlands after 8 nights at Marazion. After a day at the Eden Project it was a short haul to the Site. Easy access off the A38 for a quick getaway the next morning and onto the M5 north. As others have stated the toilet block is clean but basic. Should imagine the site would be exposed in bad weather. Is that why the wardens have a static!  Wardens friendly and helpful. All in all a functional site.

Great Location

The site located above Exeter is a great location for exploring this part of Devon, and in particular Exeter City. We used the Park and Ride to get into the city, buses every 10 mins. and if you have an over 60's bus pass, it costs nothing, far better than paying city car parking, and less frustrating than being stuck in the traffic, a situation we know well when trying to get to a friends house. We arrived with one wet awning from our previous stop, so put it up to get dry. Problem, which I don't think is mentioned in the directory, not only did I finish up with a series of bent ROCK PEGS, out came the hammer as the mallet was a pretty useless implement to use to get the pegs into the ground---- sorry rock! We were on a hard standing, but I was informed the grass is not much better -------Club please note. We have scored only 3 ticks on the facilities purely on the basis that although the toilet blocks were spotless, thank you Wardens for doing a great job, the provision of the facilities lies with the Jockey Club. Shower cubicles may be described as cramped, with no provision of a shower curtain, so if one is a little careless there is a great danger of inadvertently showering one's clothing or dropping clothes onto the soaked floor while juggling belongings on the single hanging point. This was not helped as a previous user had removed the stool to get more space, and hidden it outside the cubicle under some benching, only discovered as exiting the cubicle! One may find oneself standing to the side of the W C so as to get the door closed, and the open washbasin area becomes cosy when three or four are in the area. If one has been used to our Club's Prime Sites, this is somewhat back to basics, yet adequate.  The views in this wide expanse of countryside is something to behold, but in adverse weather conditions with strong winds, this site must be quite exposed. I note in another report that someone has commented about the noise of traffic on the A38. We did not experience this, and I would suggest wind direction plays a part in this possible annoyance. We experience the roar of the M25 at a distance of 4 miles when there is a NW'ly wind as an example. Overall a good site and we will most definitely use again when we return to this area with the van.

Spacious site

This is a wonderful site especially for dog owners who wish to walk round the race course. The site has two different areas, one of which is more sheltered as it is surrounded by hedging but it is further from the shower block. The wardens work hard and do a marvellous job, keeping the site clean. It is an ideal site for visiting South Devon and there are plenty of places and things to see. Thank you again to the wardens and look forward to visiting the site again.
