Great for a stopover on route to Devon

Used this site on route to Devon. We arrived quite late but the wardens said pick a pitch settle in and come and pay in the morning. Great service. We’ll kept site and good facilities. We took a quick walk down the lane before we carried on with our journey. Will use again on route to Cornwall next year.

A perfect stop on the way to or from the west

This site was recommended to us by another site that we stayed at the evening before. This site is located just off the A303 and was perfect for us for a stop after while returning home after being in West Dorset and Devon. The owners/staff were helpful and friendly and the site is a nice size and pleasantly appointed. Facilities were clean. Highly recommended. A nearby pub, the Eagle Tavern had great food on the Saturday night that we stayed.

Appreciate our Club!

On this trip I also stayed (unusually) on a privately owned site. It was more than twice the price, facilities limited, showers small and in need of a thorough clean. I really appreciate the high standards on all camc sites, thank you. I would prefer fixed bench in shower and not cumbersome stool, and hope more fixed drains are installed for motorhome waste water. Site was quiet and relaxing and small enclosed dog walk is convenient. Exit onto A303 can be busy but I managed to turn right in motorhome. Overall very pleasant stay.

Very peaceful neat and tidy site

I have stayed here overnight on another occasion and certainly nothing has changed. Its a very nice peaceful site kept in immaculate condition by the current wardens We stayed overnight again this time on our way to Brixham. Unfortunately the exit to the main road from the side road after leaving the site can be stressful as fast traffic flows both ways . One little negative: the gents toilet doors are extremely hard to open due to the rubber seals being too tight. Our normally strong eight year old grandson could not open them to go to the loo.

Lovely site but location not great for walkers...

The site itself was lovely. The wardens were extremely friendly and helpful and could not fault them at all; they went out of their way to help and provide information. The pitches were a good size and we had a choice of taking a pitch with sun all day or some shade. The shower and toilet facilities were immaculate and sufficient. The dog walking area was a bonus. The only downside to this site was it's location; it's positioned just off a very busy A road which is very difficult to cross on foot. There is also a limited amount of walks on your doorstep; every walk requires a car to get to the start. The local walks we found were restricted by landowners blocking off public footpaths, some with electric fences. There are also very little amenities nearby that can be accessed by foot (the warden did warn us about this as we booked so we knew in advance) but if you have a car there are some shops, bars and restaurants within a short driving distance. The nearest pub and restaurant The Candlelight Inn is well worth a visit. Lovely site and wardens but a car is a must...

A missed opportunity

This is a pleasant site for a short stay, despite the narrow access lane and the difficult exit back onto the A303. Whilst it is well maintained and has reasonably decent sized pitches, it is enclosed by tall trees all around and doesn't enjoy the open countryside views described by one recent visitor. On arrival we were greeted by a first rate lady warden who had excellent interpersonal skills, which need to be bottled for others. We were initally pleased to see the new toilet block with a good layout and facilities. It was spotlessly clean. The great disappointment here is the size of the shower cubicles, which are very narrow, indeed. This beggars belief when there is sufficient room for them to have been made to a more reasonable size without the unit as a whole encroaching too much onto the rest of site. How this could be allowed to happen in an upgrade programme beggars belief. We were also dismayed to see the use of those inconvenient plastic stools, which resrict the cubicle space even further. What happened to built in benches? The ship was spoiled for a halfpennyworth of tar! Despite proximity to a main road, we experienced little traffic noise but there was considerable daytime noise from equipment operated on a neighbouring farm. The area has lots of historic places of interest to visit within easy reach and the coast is not too far away for a day out either.

Peaceful site.......Normally.

Have visited this site many times as we enjoy the quiet tranquil atmosphere. Unfortunately on this occasion we experienced the worst time we’ve had in 16 years of using Caravan Club sites. We arrived on Tuesday and everything was fine until Friday, when the lovely tranquility we’d been experiencing was broken. Three separate families arrived together pitching next to us, between them they had 6 children. From the minute they arrived the kids were running very close to our van shouting and being very loud, then the ball came out, once again only feet from our van. We spoke to the relief warden who was not at all sympathetic, until we said about playing ball games close to our van. She sent her husband to speak with the people, this stopped the ball game. Worse was to come however, out came the scooters and also a battery powered stand on set of wheels, they were going back and forth past our van shouting to each other, then racing around the site, much faster than the 5 mile an hour limit, the relief wardens who were sat outside their van were watching all of this but seemed happy for it to continue. At one point there was a loud crash outside our van, the young lad riding on the wheels had lost control and the wheels ran into our satellite stand. At around 9pm we heard loud shouting so went to see what was happening, a member had evidently spoken to one of the kids as he’d been riding his scooter very close to his van. The children’s parents got very irate with the member, one of them even threatening violence towards him. He spoke with the relief warden the next day but said he wasn’t really interested. Fortunately the 3 families were out for most of Saturday so piece and quite resumed, at least until Sunday morning when we experienced the same again, scooters, battery powered wheels being ridden very close to our van and around the site very quickly. By midday thankfully the 3 families had left. By this time the relief wardens had left and the main wardens were back so we went to tell them about our terrible weekend, we were waisting our time. We know they weren’t around and obviously couldn’t do anything about what we’d had to put up with over the weekend, but they showed no sympathy at all, infact all we got from them was ‘well this is a family friendly site’. When we told them about the battery powered wheels being used they said ‘well there not allowed on site’ ???? We left the site on Tuesday feeling very unhappy that both the relief wardens and the main wardens were totally unsympathetic to the points we raised.

Nice Quiet Site

Some previous reviews had warned about access issues, but having looked on Google Earth I thought it wasn't that bad. I was right. Just take care on the approach just after The Eagle Tavern on the A303 and keep your eyed peeled for the junction. The site is just 100 yds down the single track lane. The site is well maintained and the facilities block is in good order and was spotlessly clean at all times. Pitches are both hard standing and grass, and both require a little side to side levelling. There is no play area for children but there is a fenced in scamper for dogs. We ate at the near by Eagle Tavern a few times, food was always nice, good portions and served promptly. The beer garden is a lovely place to site. The usual supermarket chains can be found in Chard or Ilminster. EE and Tesco mobiles worked well, on site Wifi was reliable and a good TV signal was had via our Status ariel.

Nice site, but be careful where you pitch

This is a nice site, well maintained with excellent sanitary facilities. My experience was spoilt by the pitch I was allocated. If you’re situated in any of the pitches 28-31, be aware that they border the so called ‘Dog Area’ which is effectively the dog toilet. There is a procession of people during the day walking through these pitches taking their dog(s) to relieve themselves in full view of anybody unlucky enough to be sat outside their van - it certainly spoilt our alfresco eating!

Peace!

What a lovely peaceful site - I slept so well and felt so relaxed. I wish I could have stayed longer! I was given a lovely welcome and the wardens couldn't have been more helpful. The site is immaculate and the layout means that it feels spacious. The facilities block is lovely and spotlessly clean and the service points were really convenient. I'll definitely be back!
