Doggie Paradise

We enjoyed our stay here very much. The views are superb and the cliff top walks are great, particularly if you have a dog. The nearby pub is well worth a visit. Don't be put off by the poor reviews you may have seen. If you want a foody gastro pub, the Delaval Arms is not for you. However, if you appreciate a good old fashioned British pub with good food and beer, you won't be disappointed. The only drawback is they only take cash. We'll be back!

Location location

This must be one of the best sea-view locations of any site. The views across to St Mary's lighthouse are magnificent. You need to be aware it is a sloping site and although hard standing pitches you need to drive across the grass to your pitch. The wardens were very helpful in advising us on the most suitable pitch for our motorhome given the wet ground.  There are good walks and cycle rides in either direction up the coast. Don't miss the local fish n chips, just make sure you are hungry. We were really pleased we actually saw around 8 seals on the rocks at the back of the lighthouse on this visit.

Old Hartley - old favourite!

This is our fourth return to Old Hartley in two years, and it never fails to impress. With fabulous sea views over to St Mary's lighthouse - this is the perfect seaside location. The wardens provided a seamless booking and reception, impressive attention and sociability - they are to be congratulated. The facilities have been upgraded by the club for the 2016 season, with new fittings and fixtures in three cubicles for toilets, showers and privacy washing areas. However, for members used to Club-owned sites, Old Hartley fails to provide the quality pitches we have come to expect. Allowances must be made for the fact that the site is leased annually by the club, but pitches are desperately unlevel (all requiring blocks); they are very tight in size; and fail to provide all-weather access. This means that motorhomes in particular are challenged when exiting the pitch over wet grass inclines. We needed the assistance of the wardens and two sets of mud mats. I hope the club recognises that this is an exceptional location, and popular with members - so all the more reason to examine ways of improving the pitches - even if this is simply by graveling access to pitches and improving the narrow site access road.

Fantastic views

Fantastic views and nice and peaceful. The pitches are not the best though as they are situated on hill and road to them very narrow. The site its self has lovely walks and the wardens were friendly. The harour fish shop is a must visit, best fish and chips ever!!!!!. Also a word off warning as it is right on the coast it is very windy but the walks and views worth it.

Superb Location

This site never disappoints as it has the most fantastic views of St Marys Lighthouse and miles of walks directly from the site across the clifftops and the nearby beaches. A visit to the lighthouse is essential but keep a check on the tides so you don't get stuck on the island when the sea covers the causeway. A walk to Seaton Sluice also gets you to a brilliant chippy and the Delaval Arms just outside the entrance is a nice friendly pub with some excellent food. Alternatively drive to North Shields for a selection of chippys and restaurants with fresh seafood straight out of the North Sea. My only complaint this time came from the kids as they visited the site shop for an ice cream and it was sold out but it saved me some money anyway! The site toilet block is small but very clean with nice hot showers. Overall this is a brilliant site that we have visited several times and is still a favourite. It should be noted that awnings are no longer allowed but when you feel the wind on some days you can understand why that is.

excellent site

We come to this marvellous site 4/5 times a year. We always look forward to arriving, especially if we are fortunate to get one of the pitches at the top of the site enjoying the view of the lighthouse. The wardens, Steve and Kath, are exceptional, friendly and most helpful, attributes missing in some of the wardens on other sites, but sadly this year is their last at this site. We will miss them. Good luck Steve and Kath at your new site, Durham Grange

Excellent but could be even better.

Like the previous reviewer Old Hartley is one of our very favourite CC sites with 3 excellent visits this year. We have just returned spending the last 3 nights of the season on site. We have never been on site so late in the season and the ground was quite wet. It was quite tricky getting off the relatively small hard standings onto the road. Almost all the pitches have a rising grass bank (currently very soft) to negotiate up onto the road. If the hard standings were connected to the road life would be much easier for motorhomers especially. This site is quite big most pitches are potentially very long (or could be if joined to the roads) but there is an 8m limit on the site this could be raised with longer hardstandings.  I would also use Old Hartley in the winter if open.  Anyway the site is excellent, wardens good and the facilities in very good order.

The Gem of Northumberland

We've stayed at Old Hartley lots of times during the past decade, twice this year, and only wish that it remained open all year, as we would return a few more times. This is a site where there is no need to go very far for a day out, as the site position is perfect for relaxation with it's panoramic views of the sea and coastline very hard to beat. The imediate area has all you could ever wish for. Some of the best beaches in the Britain. Plenty of choice of where to eat and drink, plus one of the best chippies we've ever experienced. We'll be back next year.
