Dreadful, vastly overpriced site.

This is one of the worst sites we have stayed on in many years of caravanning. Steeply sloping from top to bottom, there is hardly a level pitch.  All the facilities, water, drain, chemical WC disposal and the one shower block are at the very top of the site.  If one is pitched below these facilities, it is very hard work indeed pulling water carriers, waste and toilets up this steep slope. The site is totally exposed to a bitingly cold wind off the North Sea. The price of staying there is outrageous. The club are pricing people out of their sites.  There is nothing whatsoever to recommend this site

First visit mixed bag Site.

Poor showers size and number only 3, cleaning done at what seemed to be the busiest time, very uneven Site some pitches vary 3 foot side to side and end on end yes some level pitches but not enough. Very close together often over looking next door. having said this tidy and clean good views.

Will not return. Run down site

Recently visited this site. Pitches not level. Tiny. Squashed in to max income. Old and run down. Not good value for money at all. 1 fresh water tap. 1 waste water tap. 1 loo emptying point. All at the top of a steep hill. Gents has 3 loos. 3 showers. 3 privacy cubicles. For the number of pitches this is not enough. Cleaning at 10.30 leads to huge questions for facilities.  Relief wardens were arrogant and rude. When questioned why no water at service points was told we can always leave. An attitude from years ago. They should NOT be working for this club. But wait. Regular warden not much better. What is wrong with these people.  Way to many pitches ratio to facilities offered. Fees should be reduced to match. Close it or revamp it. Awful site. Don't bother.

Return

This was a return visit and despite the cold and high winds we enjoyed our trip back to Old Hartley more so after the relief warden allowed us to move our big motor home so we were facing into the wind making things bareable and less rocky!! A thing to remember for future visits. The scenery is always fantastic and to be able to see seals hauled out on the rocks at the lighthouse just made the trip!

First Visit

this was our first visit to this site and only negatives were broken tiles in one of the gents showers and a fellow member leaving chewing gum on the soap holder in the shower (you know who and what you are) The relief wardens on duty were a credit to the club. the views were excellent and a short walk to the lighthouse was worth it to see the seals.

uphill struggle for water

Good points: a really good site with tremendous views, beaches, walks, shops and pubs locally. Bad points: the site plan indicates service points at the bottom of the site but these are just brick walls around the dust bins, no water or waste facilities you have to walk up to the top of the site to get fresh water, empty waste and empty toilets. OK if you are fit but not so good otherwise. If you have a dog make sure you stay at the top of the site because it is a long walk to the only entrance exit from the site to the dog walk. Relief wardens brilliant shame about the other who have lack of people skills. Be prepared to use a number of levelling blocks as the pitches have various slopes both up and down and sideways. Would we go back yes of course we like a challenge.

Nice site. Good location. Just cant understand why as soon as you give a man a uniform he loses his manners. The word please works so much better than waving your arms about and yelling. Shame really as this is such a good site.

Magnificent Views

Although I already live in NE across the Tyne in South Shields, it is always a pleasure to do a long weekend at Old Hartley CC site. All pitches are none awning but that's no problem for myself. The vast majority of the pitches are sloping but the site information states this so I was prepared with blocks to get caravan level. Once set up and kettle boiling it's time to sit down and relax and soak in the magnificent views that are all around, especially St Mary's Island and Lighthouse. On our second day we were fortunate that tide was low around mid afternoon so we visited the lighthouse and also the Seal Watch hutch at back where volunteers loaned Binoculars to observe the Seals basking in the sun. Eating out is very good with many good pubs within a mile at most, however the one right next to the CC site entrance The Delaval Hall is very good and we used this on our first and last nights to save time. Really enjoyed the local ale but note this pub does not take credit or other plastic cards just cash! No matter there is an ATM outside a reasonably stocked Co-op store 2 mins drive from site entrance. Site is easy to get to in fact I, having been to Old Hartley several times before, find it better to use the road that takes you there from Shiremoor as you then avoid towing through Whitley Bay town. This road leads directly to the A19 junction. Site facilities are excellent as are wardens. A very pleasant stay!

Just the tonic.

Great Wardens, Very helpfull and informative, Spotless facilities and a fantastic view, Definitely worth the early alarm call to watch the sunrise. Fantastic dog friendly beaches 15 minutes pleasant walk North & South of the site, there are smaller cove beaches on the doorstep of the site when the tide is out.       Will definitely be on the "must return to list" Thanks again to the wardens, they work very hard and are the icing on the cake.
