Needs modernising

A great view of the sea and lighthouse. The site is on a slope and even the bottom pitches are sloping and need ramps. Modern pitches for motorhomes are level and some even have block paving. This site needs more gravel or a digger to upgrade the site. The motorhome taps are also on a severe slope. They could easily be moved to the flat tarmac area above so that filling means a full tank and no need to visit each day. Time to modernise? The site has good walks to the north and south and seals can be seen at the lighthouse. Convenient bus stops to reach places to the north and south...

Nice site and handy for Newcastle as well as nice walks

We were a bit put off when we arrived by some "more than my job's worth" attitude. For example, we were 30 minutes early, so we decided to wait it the virtually empty car park. We were immediately and abruptly moved on - "where would they be if everyone was to park in the carpark, after all?" they may as well have said! I think it was an over zealous but understandable determination to stick to the Covid rules, and the wardens were very friendly from 1.00 onwards (in fact like different people). From then on, it was all great. The view was spectacular and had a great coast walk into Whitley Bay. We had actually gone to meet our son and fiancee in Newcastle (outdoors in the rain) and that was very easily done in one short bus ride. Will go again but we will get our timings right this time. P.S. Top tip, you need to twist to the right when plugging into hook up. I've never seen this before and, being dim, it took me a while to suss it.

First CAMC site stay

We headed to Old Hartley for our first CAMC site stay and our first significant trip away in our first van. Theresa picked pitch 12 down by the pathway overlooking the sea towards St Mary’s Island. The view was fantastic and the sound of the sea and waves from below was very therapeutic at nighttime. We spoke with three sets of wardens who were all very friendly, helpful and informative. As newbies we were doing some fact checking and they were all only too glad to help and provide assistance. The facilities were cleaned within an inch of their life each day and the Covid-19 measures were clearly explained and signed however one or two did seem to have difficulty implementing them sadly. Nonetheless we both felt safe and as protected as best as we could have been. Would I go back to Old Hartley, without a doubt. However I am unlikely to do so for solely the reason there are so many options for us and we have so much to see, having just come to the wobble box family, that we want to try new places and see new sights. Thank you for an excellent stay, it has confirmed we have been well and truly bitten by this vanning bug. 😆

Another good stay

As ever, the stay was enjoyable. The facilities were clean and social distancing was maintained even though the site was pretty full. We didn't like the wrist bands for controlling two in the toilet block at any one time as you were inevitably handling something someone else had used. At Fakenham you are asked to clean down all door handles and taps after use, not so here. What I would complain about only applies to the irresponsible dog owners who let their dogs c**p on the grass and don't pick it up. You should be ashamed of yourselves, whoever you were. Disgusting.

Great Site and Great Wardens

We stumbled on this site and have now been 2 weekends in a row and extended both times. The facilities are clean and tidy and very well run. Covid precautions give a great sense of control and safety. Some of the pitches aren't great as the site is on a hillside so some require you to use ramps at the highest point but the location has amazing views out to sea and of St Marys lighthouse. The walks are amazing both north and south right along the coastline. The site is nice and quiet so not great for families as the kids have little to do on site but it was great for us as a couple with 2 dogs. The wardens are a credit to CAMC. A lovely friendly couple with a great sense of humour. Great to have such wardens as not all of our experiences with wardens have been as good. Will definitely be back again soon (Covid permitting)

Just spent a week at this site. This has been our fifth visit to the site. The vista is wonderful, with the benefit that you can see the sea from most pitches. We also love the many walks from the site. The walk into Whitley Bay is perhaps our favourite with lunch at Spanish City or the walk to Blyth and fish and chops at Coast liner. The Covid rules worked very well and although the site was busy we never had to queue to use the facilities. The Wardens do an excellent job and are very pleasant and helpful. Wev will most certainly be back.

First time visitors honest review

We have been CC members for many years. Our first visit to Old Hartley. Good - Lovely views of the sea and the lighthouse. Excellent access to beaches and cliff top walks. Lovely clean toilet blocks, wardens fantastic. Bad - Very sloped pitches, we needed 4 stacker pads and lock n level was on maximum. The site is very exposed to the elements with little or no protection if the winds are up. No awnings are permitted as the pitches are fairly small. Access to site is goof from the A19 Newcastle. Checkin was seamless and wardens spot on as ever. TV reception was on but not fantastic. 4G signal (O2) was great. Wifi was on site but our pitch (25) was in between masts so our signal wasn't too great. Due to the heavily sloped pitches and not being able to put up an awning I don't think we will be back, But these are really outside of the sites control.

Perfect!

What a wonderful site! We stayed here on an overnight on journey north bound. Wish we had know how fantastic the site is and we would have booked for longer. Great views and lovely walks. Site well kept, clean and tidy by delightful wardens. Will definitely visit again!

Two wonderful nights at Old Hartley

We chose this site as we wanted to be close to Newcastle to visit the city. Unfortunately we only booked for two nights because we were so thrilled with the position and could have spent a week here! We were lucky enough to get a pitch by the sea, although as it is on a slope, the whole site has sea views. The facilities are clean and the "Covid systems" were clear and easy to follow. We will definitely return, and wholeheartedly recommend to others. Super little site.

Returning visitors

This was approximately our fifteenth visit to this site. The location is first class with wonderful sea views. Unfortunately there is a car park situated next to it which is busy late at night, causing us noise disturbance, and if you are pitched at the lower end of the site there is no water/waste/chemical toilet service point. These are the only downsides to this site. We have to say that in these difficult times the Site Managers work extremely hard keeping the site immaculate and always pass the time of day when they see you. The extra workload on them must be extremely tiring and we can only admire their efforts in making the site safe and comfortable for all members. Well done, Site Managers!
