Awful weather but very good site!

Despite the rather cold and damp April weather, the site was in good condition. The welcome was pleasant and the office helpful. There are two parts to this caravan site - the side for people with families and the side for people without. We were on the family side. This part has well set up pitches, many of them with their won water and waste facilities. The area is in the form of a large square with an excellent recreational area inside, with picnic tables - ideal for families with children or even pensioners like us when the sun shines! The site is quite close to Greetham village - there is a direct path through a small woodland which emerges near the Parish Church (which we went to and found very welcoming). Nearby is the Plough Inn which, we discovered, serves excellent food. Overall, weather notwithstanding, a very enjoyable stay. Recommended.

Rather neutral about this site

Rang and booked for one night, paid card over the phone. Arrived having followed satnav which took us down Church Lane, then on to Shepherds Lane, which is gated and closed. Mentioned this to receptionist, the same one I had spoke to earlier, to be told that happed a lot! Would have been nice to know before as we are in an RV with tow car on the back. We were then told that 27' to too big for their pitches, despite having been asked the question when we booked??? As we were only staying for one night we were allowed to stay, but made to feel very uncomfortable about it!  Having parked on the pitch we had a good 7' beween the front of our RV and the roadway...?? The site is otherwise quite reasonable with a good wooded walking area and nature trail. Facilities were in the process of being extended. We saw the much talked about chimney and in the morning it was smoking quite a lot, but the wind was taking it away from the site, so was not a problem, but can understand why there have been previous comments about it.

Great site, glad to have visited.

Having read previous reviews after booking, I wondered if I had made a mistake in doing so, as my son and his wife and 2 young boys had just bought their first caravan and this was their first ever trip, and we were to 'show them the ropes' However we had a wonderful stay at the Rutland site, in spite of freezing weather, sleet and wind. The management could not be held responsible for this though! We were welcomed by helpful friendly staff, the hard standing pitches all had water and their own drainage and were a generous size. We were on the family area and could hear no obtrusive noises or smells at all and the showers etc were warm, clean and even had music in them, a nice touch in my book. It just proves to me that some folk will just moan about sites just for the sake of it. Thank you to Rutland Caravan site we all loved it and our son and his family are most definitely hooked an caravaning and have lots more sites booked for 2016.

Good site... but with one major drawback

Just spent three nights here and at first viewing this site really looked good.  Large, well spaced out, with a separate area for adults only, leaving the northern part of the site with big grass area open for families with children.

There is a swimming pool, which by all accounts was good and a large dog walk area filled with trees. A short walk will take you to the village of Greetham with two very nice pubs.

Yes, there is building work going on, extending one of the toilet blocks, but this wasn't intrusive and looks to be pretty much complete now anyway. I expect this to open shortly, giving a boost to the facilities, which are pretty good. .

..and then there's the elephant in the room.

The site is adjacent to a very active farm / industrial estate. This means that you will experience all the noise and smells that go with such activity, particularly if you pitch in the "adults" area to the south of the site.

This meant, for us, loud music (presumably for the employees), loud bangs, and at times the sound of a generator or something similar, running at all hours of the day.

And then there is the smell and smoke. As noted by a previous reviewer, there is a "bio generator" or somesuch, near the entrance to the site, but within the (very) adjacent industrial estate.

This "generates" acrid smoke and smells, which, if the wind has any easterly component, spills across the caravan site. Not at all pleasant, and you could not tolerably  sit outside.

I guess this wouldn't be a problem if the wind stays westerly, but the wind direction won't do anything for the noise issue.

So, a really good site, but let down by it's location right next to a busy industrial farm / unit, which is a great shame as I dare say this this beyond the owners control.

What on earth has happened to Rutland?

We've been coming to this site for years and it is a frim favourite but following our latest stay it will be a long time before we visit again

Wardens attitude: Checked in fine and set up on site. I then headed off to buy some groceries. I noticed on the way in that the main road to Oakham was closed and decided to ask the wardens for the best alternate route. I was met by one of the rudest individuals it has been my displeasure to meet...I was advised that they have had a convoy of people asking and I would just have to find my own way!!....I then asked if the road was closed on Greetham to which the response was..I work on the campsite, I live on the campsite how should I know!! At this point I left site office in disgust

Toilet Block: Having been here over the New Year we were advised that the adult toilet block extension would be complete ready for Easter....it is far from ready...more worryingly is the lack of regard for Health and Safety on what is a building site (check my photo's on Trip adviser). Over the Easter weekend there were 5 male and 5 female tolites to service an entire campsite (queues were forming at 07:30!)

Porta Cabin: Again check my photo's on trip advisor. For some reason they have plonked a rusty old metal porta cabin outside the family toilet block. The door is missing and there is more than enough room for children to gain access to broken glass and old electrical appliances strewn across the floor

So disappointing as you will see from an earlier review how much we loved this site

Easter Break

This was our second visit to this site and it won't be our last. Clean friendly site, with an indoor swimming pool, which I would recommend the private hire @ £30 per hour. Great location for dog owners, with a secure dog walking area or a small walk into the village, which all the pubs are dog friendly and very accommodating. A 10 minute drive to Rutland Waters which makes an excellent walk or cycle with hire shops and cafes if required. All water sports activities are available for the adventurous or fabulous scenery to admire if you just want a relaxing time. Can't wait for our return.

again great site but beware

stayed 12/3/16 were due to stay until 22/3/16. Had to cut stay short due to site bio generator causing so much smoke it stung the eyes and throat. Had to use my inhaler for the first time in months. Took my wife home ill due to coughing and packed the caravan up the next day. The caravan and awning stinks like a bonfire. Our friends due to join us cancelled. Noisy farm and construction work on site. Sort out the problems and the site will be hard to beat

Good location but....

Great location for cycling and walking. Really quiet country roads. Wardens very friendly and a well stocked reception - papers, bread, hot drinks etc. Went to the Wheatsheaf in the village to eat which was exceptionally good and a short walk away. My gripe ... When booking we were not told that building works were being carried out. They are refurbishing the toilet block on the adult side of the site. We were allocated pitch 5 on the adult field which was opposite to the toilet block which was being refurbished.  It was anything but a quiet relaxing stay.  We arrived on Sunday which was quiet but on the the second day, Monday we had JCB's and tractors moving bricks and breeze blocks and workmen banging for the majority of the day. The third day a massive concrete lorry turned up at 7.30am - no chance of a lie in - delivering goodness knows how much concrete. The next day the same, woken up at 7.30am to the sound of another concrete lorry. This was no more than 50 yards from our pitch. I know these works have to be carried out if the toilet block is to be refurbished but there is no mention of the disruption on the website and when we telephoned to book the wardens did not mention that there was only one toilet block in action and that we were unlikely to have a quiet and relaxing stay due to the building work noise. If we had known we would have booked in at a different site.

A Happy Valentine's Day

A very friendly and well maintained site. Although there was work being carried out for the new season, this did not hinder our enjoyment. There was a good bus service from the local village. We enjoyed a fantastic Valentine's Day meal at the Wheatsheaf pub and were made to feel very welcome by the locals.

Motorhome 'get together' weekend

We have stayed at this site on several occasions but not since it became an Affiliated Site. A group of 5 motorhomers met for the weekend and were allocated fantastic, hard standing, all serviced pitches, next to each other. We really appreciated this thoughtful gesture by the lady who took our bookings. We were made aware of an evening meal offer at Greetham Valley Golf Club and decided to give it a go. We were collected and dropped off by minibus from the golf club and had, what has to be, one of the most enjoyable meals at just £10 for 2 courses. We were so impressed we returned for a 2nd night to enjoy their Pie, Pud & Party night. Again we were collected and dropped off right outside the site. This made both evenings such an enjoyable experience. The site was so quiet, it was lovely to wake up to the sound of birdsong everywhere. The newly laid all service pitches in the 'Adult only' area were very generous with more than adequate space between each other. The idea of having this area dedicated to Adults is a brilliant idea. The site is very well maintained and although a quieter time of the season, nothing was too much trouble. We all had a happy, relaxing & thoroughly enjoyable weekend - so much so, we have pencilled the same time & the same site this time next year!
