York Visit

This was our second visit to Thirsk and another pleasant stay, I wont go on about the showers or facilities I think they have been mentioned more than once, a quick and easy check in by the wardens quick pitch up and hey presto ready to take a stroll in the sun, walked to supermarket for essentials dropped them back at the van and a then into town for a stroll and a pint and bite to eat in some nice/characterful pubs. On our 2 night stay we did not hear any boy racers or delivery trucks that has been stated on previous posts maybe just lucky. Our second day was a planned up and early outing into York on the train (15 mins and £22 return for 2 adults) without any hassle and trying to book into Rowntree without any success, this for us is the best of both, Thirsk really is a great place to use as a base if you are not bothered about using the car.

Herriot museum

We stayed here for three nights on our way to the North Yorkshire Moors as we wanted to visit the Herriot museum. The site is perfect for walking into Thirsk and has two supermarkets close by. The toilet and shower block needs refurbishing but was very clean.

Wrong Pitch..!

Our first stay at a Caravan Club site to try out our shiny new membership. Picked Thirsk race course for its central location but might have overcooked that a little - or should I say, a 'Lidl'..! The right hand corner of the site seemed undersubscribed and quiet so we pitched up there. Big mistake. Lidl's loading bay is just behind the fence and their forklift/artic drum solo went on from midnight till one on our first night. Then half twelve till half one in the morning on the second. Night three was going swimmingly until they started up at a very irritating TWO in the morning for almost an hour. By Day Four we were suffering sleep deprivation so we headed home a day early. The 'boy racers' were noticeable at times on the lane behind the site, but at least they had the good grace to go to bed before midnight, bless 'em. Our advice would be to stick close to the amenities end of the field. Or take really good earplugs.

noise

Glad we didn't let the reviews about the noise from the "Boy Racers" put us off as we had no problems the Fri/Sat night we were there only heard the odd noisy car which didn't bother us. Toilet Block clean but very dated. Could do with more service points for water and waste. Only 5-10 min walk into Thirsk which has some nice Pubs and some not so, so choose wisely. Tesco and Lidl right next to site.

Feels like we were cheated

This is the 2nd time we've booked at Thirsk Racecourse. The first time, we realised we hadn't checked to see if there was a race meeting that weekend - and when we realised there was, we cancelled. So next time, we made sure to check beforehand. No races planned for the weekend we booked. Lovely. Until we arrived at 7pm on Friday, only to find that a race meeting had been arranged since we booked meaning we had to be off the site by 10am on the Sunday. For us working folks, we already only get one proper day out of a weekend away (Saturday), but we enjoy our lazy Sundays as part of our getaways. But not this time, as we would have to be up from 7am to ensure everyone was washed, fed and packed. I can't help but feel that the site should have contacted us to tell us about the race meeting - but that they chose not to, as they didn't want to lose any money from the cancellations that could have occurred (we certainly would have tried to book somewhere else instead). Apart from that, the site is reasonable. Nice and flat with large grass pitches. The toilet block was clean, but basic (typical racecourse style). The noise from the Lidl next door was surprisingly loud late at night, and the lane to the rear of the site had loud cars at various times. But of course the site can't help any of this. Location is perfect for Thirsk - a 5 min walk. If that No Wifi, but 3G (didn't get any 4G) was excellent on '3'.

Mal

The site is ideally located for the town centre and 2 supermarkets. The shower blocks and toilets are very clean. The only disappointing thing was the noise from the boy racers on the road behind where we were sited. The noise carried on till around 1am then started again at 6am.

dissapointing

we booked 2 nights for £14. for my 2 grandkids and myself. found out on arriving. that we were only allowed to stay on site for the one night. had to stay one night on the rally field. no toilets. and no electric. my oppinion. they couldnt be botherd to sort the site out on the friday. so made us stay on rally field for the best part of two days. they reduced the price to £10. but only used site for a few hours. noisy no activities for children. Very Very dissapointed. if i travel to thirsk in the future. i will be staying elswere.

Noisey Site

Very noisy site. With local Lidl having delivery bay right on top of pitches and having deliveries until late at night, combined with Ambulance and Fire station next door and the small lane which runs up the side of the site which attracts local boy racers and motorbikes out on weekend days out. Ensure you get a pitch as close to the reception block as possible. Remember about Race days and read the “important notice” The wardens let you back on site between 6 and 7 on the evening after the race. Apart from that great for Thirsk.

Only good point is its closeness to Town Centre

We stayed one night only and thank god for that . This town is plagued with Boy Racers who will be burning up the local roads till the early hours > Where are North Yorkshire Police ? Then on top of that the Lidl delivery ramp is next to site fence so at 23.00 delivery arrives and proceeds to bang and crash unloading pallets for about an hour . The noisiest site we have stayed on . No blame to the wardens as they can only do so much but these points have been made by several reviewers and how anyone can give five stars for peacefull site is beyond me . Another couple of points , even though site had over a dozen empty pitches the "sorry site full " sign was on display . Why . Some Pitches (ie the best ones near the race track) were marked as not available . So what do you have to do to become a CC Club VIP ?? For £19 a night the site is on a par with a club rally Field with electric but peaceful it certainly isn't.
