Ok but not great

We did a European tour visiting Italy, Germany, Belgium Austria. This was the worst of all the sites we visited - that said most of them were really good so a High benchmark. The main issue was the pitches - they are generally far too small and in poor condition. In fairness there had previously been some bad weather which left the grass in poor condition. We left the site early!! On the positives..... The staff genuinely tried their hardest to help - although couldn't offer a suitable alternative. The restaurant staff were great and if you have kids they will like the burger joint, pool, river and entertainment staff.

August 2016

We stayed here on the way to Germany for 2 nights, and on the way back for 1 night, on arrival we went to reception and there was almost panic about the size of our van we need to move you quickly so my husband was taken to the pitch leaving me on my own to sign in, I had to pay tourist tax then I was given a map and pitch number was circled on it and told someone will take you to the pitch, this didn't happen so I managed to decipher the map and find it, later a chap for reception turned up and wanted me to pay the tourist tax again, I told him the Chinese girl took the money, have you the receipt he said, no she didn't give me one I replied, he then asked me if I was sure I paid it. The organisation is poor, the pitch was very small, no room for a full awning should we have wanted to put it up and very close to other vans tents too close for health and safety I would have thought not at all like English pitches. Toilets and showers were not very clean. Road to site narrow and winding. Our 2nd pitch was near reception, our escort to pitch didn't materialise so my husband went to pitch with van after lots of manovere got van in, site staff appeared then told us pitch wasn't good enough offered us another pitch we declined after 5 hours driving this was all we needed, after discussion we pitched across 2 pitches to enable easier access to vacate in the morning. In the morning we towed caravan to entrance to pitch area then had to unhitch van and move it with mover to get it out, if we didn't have mover we would have been stuck, they knew size of van so why allocate a small pitch there were plenty of other empty large pitches on site, we weren't impressed. They only offered a different pitch when they realised their mistake.

Poorly treated

Stayed here for 2 nights (11th-13th August 2016). This was the last site of 8 that we'd stayed at as part of a wonderful 3 week tour which had taken us to Spain, France and then Belgium to allow us to visit the European space centre. We booked the site and 'special pitch' last November. We arrived at 5pm and the reception staff seemed surprised to find we had a reservation (we took the caravan club confirmation). According to the caravan club brochure the pitches should be 100 m square. We were assigned pitch number 375A. The staff seemed a little confused as to where it was. We were then escorted to what can only be described as an overnight stopover pitch by reception. We had to park the motorhome right up against the hedge and we couldn't even wind out the awning properly as the pitch was so small - we could barely get our chairs outside (I estimated that it was less than 50m square). Water and drainage was shared between 6 pitches. I went back to reception to query whether we had been given the correct pitch and was informed that it was as it was reinforced to prevent the motorhome sinking. I asked about the size of the pitch and was told that it was correct. It was only when we walked around the site later that we realised that there were other large motor homes with much more space and on normal pitches. More often than not they had Belgium or Dutch number plates and it appeared that the site management either prioritised people from these countries or discriminated against British people. This unfair treatment really annoyed me and so I emailed the caravan club with photographic evidence. I received a phone call from them to say that they were not happy about the pitch we had been given and they were going to investigate and ring the campsite. Shortly afterwards I received a second phone call from the caravan club defending the site and saying that apparently it was a motorhome pitch and that I should have been told that it was reinforced to prevent the motorhome from sinking. I pointed out to the lady from the caravan club that there were other motor homes on large normal pitches. I think the site management had tried to mislead her. She said the site management had agreed to refund one nights fees and would I agree to that. Upon reflection I think the site management should of offered an apology, a full refund and compensation for ruining our holiday. However perhaps since we booked through the caravan club they should also offer compensation. I wouldn't recommend the site as its in a rather dreary area which has no character. The people in the shop were nice enough. Oh one last thing, on the second day we filled a water container with water from the shared water supply. We noticed it appeared brown and later on the sediment settled to the bottom. We then poured it away and got water from another tap which was okay. Upon reflection I should have reported it to reception but I wasn't convinced they would take any notice. Due to the pitch location by reception it was noisy at night.

Great Site

A great site with great facilities. The location is ideal for visiting the local area which includes the wild life park and Grottes de Han. The Grottes are superbe and cover a distance of 2.7km through the hill. There is a previously stated some rail noise from the adjacent railway which only carries passenger traffic and there are no night trains. The facilities are superbe, although a few hooks in the toilet block near the wash basins would be a useful addition to hang towels or shirts on. The staff, mainly students are extremely helpful and friendly. Will certainly return

Our second stay

Stayed here a few years ago and again a week ago and our feelings on this site are still the same - its a great base to explore from! We had a 5 night stay to look forward to and enjoy. Reception were very helpful on our first arrival with a welcome pack and lots or useful information. Our pitch was pre reserved by the site but due to wet weather we were offered a motorhome pitch as our one was very muddy - we thanked the staff and happily took the much dryer option. However the rain was relentless but our pitch stayed reasonably dry so happy days. Washrooms are modern, bright and well equipped. Shop opens for morning and afternoon trade plus breads and pastries are available for order for next days breakfast. We were given vouchers for complimentary drinks at the bar which we were only too happy to visit! We chose to taste quality Belguim beer and found the staff to be friendly and the bar to feel like a 'proper' bar and not a campsite - it has an upmarket feel. Needless to say the beer was so good we stayed to try one or two more.... The site does have a pretty river flowing along its edge. There is a railroad running along its border which does create some noise. Its no too loud and seems to not run at night but if you are a very light sleeper you may be woken by it. We didn't find it a problem, some may disagree. Places to visit nearby are plentiful. Lots of places of interest withing easy driving distance but bear in mind nothing much without a drive. We visited Han sur Lesse (caves), Boullion castle, Dinant citadel and Fourneau st Michele (open air museum) to mention the ones I remember off my head. So a campsite with lovely level pitches, a pretty river, a decent bar and shop and restaurant, modern clean facilities in easy distance to visit some of the jewels of Belguim. Whats not to like?

A pretty good stay actually

We spent 8 nights here over the easter break & i have to say we were impressed. This site is up to the CC standard.I say we as we had 2 teenagers & an 8 year old. The onsite facilities are good but beware all you long stay shower users you only get 5 mins but plenty of them over 2 blocks. There is train noise as the site buts up to the track but nothing during the night. It did rain most days & most of the week & there is an issue with drainage as it was soggy but we went out & about sight seeing anyway. The onsite shop was closed most of the time & the pool was all the time but the park does look after the kids - we had a great time with an easter egg hunt & they even translate as there was so many nationalities. The food in the restaurant was really good (on the 2 times we visited) but we did most of it in the caravan from local shops. Rochfort,Dinant, Euro Space Centre & The Bastonge Museum were all good days out. Overall I would recommend it

Served its purpose ...

Two nights spent here over New Year en route to the ferry at the Hoek.

First impressions are good; friendly and helpful reception and spacious pitches if not a little worn and very muddy. The facilities appeared to be relatively new and were clean, warm and functional.

This site, I imagine, will be very busy in summer as it is geared to providing an activity-filled holiday for the families who come with tents and tourers as well as the those looking for a billet in cabin-type accommodation. There seemed to be a significant number of privately-owned cabins some of which were occupied whilst we were there.

Our second afternoon was somewhat disturbed by the relentless ‘beat’ of music coming from the bar whilst the management set up the place for the New Years’ Eve party. Asking in reception if there was to be a party later that evening, we were curtly informed that it was for their regular guests only. By this, we took it to mean those that were holidaying in the privately owned cabins. Our reason for the enquiry was not to secure an invite to the same but rather to see if we could move further away from the ‘din’ fearing that it would only get worse as the night went on and we did have an early start in order to get away the next morning. We moved well away and the noise of the bar was then inaudible.

We settled to a quieter night but the fireworks (understandable) awoke us: the site’s display was soon over but it then transpired that many of the regular guests had bought quantities to let off on the site, wherever they chose, and with little regard for the outfits of visitors.

It is a site that served its purpose for us: we would not return despite its relative cheapness as a member of the management, not knowing that our knowledge of Dutch was probably far better than she imagined, was not exactly welcoming in her comments to us as we walked by her on returning from a walk!

Just Great

We only stayed two nights and we were absolutely so pleased with everything. Clean, staff extremely friendly. We will for sure come back next year and stay at least one week. If I would say something to perhaps improve it even more is that the timed showers caused a little bit chaos for my kids, 5 mins is not enough time for a child, I was fine but very fast!! The fastest shower I ever had. :-)

Good, family-friendly site

Only stayed for a three nights in early September but this place exceeded our expectations. Level serviced pitches with great facility block close by. The shop has all you need to top up on essentials and does fresh bread daily. The restaurant was excellent (best we've ever had at a campsite including extensive French travels) and it was family friendly but ensured tables without small people eating were given quieter locations if they wanted. May be limited for activities after a few days if you want to do more than relax or walk in the area (several good routes from the site). There is some train noise during the day but doesn't detract from a lovely campsite.

Lovely site but out of the way

Spent 2 nights here. Narrow approach road and fairly steep. As it was end of high season the pitches were very worn and they had a lot of rain prior to arriving so made it very muddy. Friendly staff. Shown to our pitch and got told to pitch sideways (new to us) and nobody else was (very strange). Nice pool and lots of seating/sunbeds. Diner was ok but a bit pricey for what it was and only open short hours. Shop was well stocked with essentials, even had camping stuff for sale. We were by the river at the end of the site so was quiet and peaceful. Lots of static homes for rental. Toilet/shower/washing up block was kept immaculate. Nearest place with any shops is Rochefort and that's not got lots. Some lovely scenary around and about
