Frequently asked questions

  • What should I do if I break down?

Switch off your engine and switch on your hazard warning lights. If you can easily get the vehicle to a safe place, please do so, but if this cannot be achieved, ensure you get yourself and any passengers to a safe place before you do anything else. If the problem has been caused by a major accident, call the emergency services first. Otherwise, simply use the Green Flag App* or call 0800 051 5318, ideally with your MAYDAY policy number to hand (not your Caravan and Motorhome Club membership number).

Click here to find the MAYDAY Policy booklet, which has more information on what to do should you break down.

    * Please note the Green Flag App is not available if your vehicle is registered in the Isle of Man.

  • Does MAYDAY UK Breakdown Cover cover caravans and motorhomes?

Yes, MAYDAY UK Breakdown Cover includes all standard makes of caravans and trailers (when being towed by the vehicle on cover), motorhomes and campervans of any age, weight, or size, providing you are operating within UK legal towing guidelines and using an ordinary 50mm tow-ball when towing a caravan or trailer.

  • Does using MAYDAY UK Breakdown Cover affect my insurance?

No, your breakdown cover and your vehicle insurance are completely separate, even if they are being provided by the same company. However, following an accident, you may need to use your breakdown cover before making a repair claim under your vehicle insurance.

  • Can I get MAYDAY UK Breakdown Cover in Europe?

MAYDAY Breakdown is only available in the UK. If you’re looking for breakdown cover for European travel please get a quote for our Red Pennant product which can provide breakdown cover and/or travel insurance.

  • Are there different levels of MAYDAY UK Breakdown cover?

Yes, MAYDAY offers three different levels of cover.

Our 'Roadside & Recovery' level includes roadside assistance to try and get you going again; recovery to a single UK destination if your vehicle can’t be repaired; a second drop-off within 75 miles of your home if your caravan or trailer needs to be recovered to a different destination; misfuelling cover; and our Dual Recovery feature, which means that if your vehicle breaks down on the way to (or during) a holiday and can’t be fixed, we'll take you on to your destination and, if your vehicle can’t be fixed during the holiday, we’ll take it (and you) back home again once your holiday is complete.

If you want extra peace of mind, we offer our 'Premium UK' cover level, which includes all the features of Roadside & Recovery, and also includes Homecall, which provides help with your vehicle at your home or recovering your car or motorhome/campervan to your nearest repairer. It also includes Extra Care, which offers a choice of one of either accommodation (up to £100 per person and a max of £600 per breakdown), car hire or alternative transport (up to £100), as well as deferred recovery and even an emergency driver if the main driver is incapacitated.

And finally, our top-tier cover level, 'Premium UK Plus', which offers all the benefits of Premium UK and also includes Enhanced Extra Care, offering a combination of accommodation (up to £150 per person and a max of £900 per breakdown), car hire and/or alternative transport (up to £150) as well as our unique Pre-Departure Caravan Cover element, which gets your immobilised caravan or trailer moving, even when it’s at home.

  • Am I covered if a towed caravan breaks down?

Yes, when you take out MAYDAY UK Breakdown Cover, this includes both your tow-car and your caravan when they are being used together, and your car alone when the caravan is not being used. This means all the elements of your chosen cover level will apply to your car/caravan combination, or just your car if you are driving it on its own.

  • Tell me more about Home call

Our Premium UK and Premium UK Plus cover levels both include Homecall. We’ll come to you at home, where the vehicle is normally stored (if different) or if you’ve broken down within a quarter of a mile of that location and, if it’s not possible to get you going again, we’ll take you and your vehicle (and your passengers if required) to the nearest garage or any other single destination within 25 miles of where the breakdown happened.

If you have our Roadside & Recovery cover level, and you break down at home, where the vehicle is usually stored, or within a quarter of a mile of that location, you will not be covered.

  • Does MAYDAY have any age, size or weight restrictions?

There are no size, weight or vehicle age restrictions with MAYDAY, providing you are operating within UK legal towing guidelines and using an ordinary 50mm tow-ball when towing a caravan or trailer. This policy does not provide cover for 5th wheelers. There are also no extra charges for specialist equipment if your outfit gets stuck on soft ground or other ‘off-road’ areas.

  • How many trips does a MAYDAY policy cover?

MAYDAY UK Breakdown Cover is an annual policy that covers every trip you make throughout the year, whether this is a single trip, or multiple trips, and regardless of the length of the trip - which is why we say you are covered 24/7/365.

  • Is breakdown cover worth having?

Technical difficulties can happen at any time with any vehicle, regardless of their age, model and potentially whatever they’re towing. No matter how well you maintain your vehicles, there’s always 'the other guy', the weather and any number of other elements outside your control. MAYDAY UK Breakdown Cover offers you the peace of mind that wherever you’re going, our Green Flag partners will be by your side if you do run into any difficulties, with unlimited call outs, 24/7/365 days a year, as long as it’s not for the same problem.
