Why stay here ...

This pleasantly wooded site sits at the gateway to the Auvergne Natural Park with its spectacular volcanoes. Peaceful in low season, it has a busy summer period when it offers organised entertainment and the pool area is lively with children.

The pitches are arranged in groups, which are separated by shrubs and trees that provide ample shade. Dogs are welcome and will love long walks in the surrounding countryside.

Take a bus or a 20 minute walk to the spa town of Royat, where you can take advantage of the healing properties of the thermal waters. The volcanic area offers some invigorating walks and there are almost 50 châteaux dotted around the region. Children will enjoy Vulcania, a volcano-themed park.

A must visit area

Huttopia Royat
We were welcomed by a very pleasant lady , at reception, who spoke perfect English. We were asked to chose our pitch and return let her know which we had decided on. After walking around the site we eventually chose Pitch no. 3. It was a good size pitch near the entrance and all amenities. Good flat level pitch on grassy area close to amenities and good size. Not much of an outlook as the pitches were in small cul de sacs of about 11 spaces. FACILITIES Toilet and shower block- Although the main block was central there were two other blocks on this site. The block looked relatively modern and consisted of unisex toilets and showers which were cleaned regularly (3/4 times a day) There was also a separate block purely for disabled people. Washing up area- Lots of hot water and constantly kept clean Laundry area.- as per the washing up Fresh water- somewhat difficult to find initially but I did eventually find an outlet just 100 meters from our pitch. Waste water and chemical waste- only available outlet we could find was at the main Motorhome service point which fortunately wasn’t too far away for us but had I chosen a pitch elsewhere I might have had a long walk to get there. Bar- used on first night but the prices were somewhat extortionate. ( £10 for two beers). It is after all a Commercially run site Restaurant- we didn’t see many people using the Restaurant which quite honestly it was merely a snack bar with a very limited menu which again we considered overpriced Pool- a nice little pool which we used twice. Really to cool off. I should imagine it would be quite cramped in peak season Entertainment- on the day we arrived we were told that there would be lots of “activities” as from the 1st July. Although there was something taking place it wasn’t’ noisey at all. LOCATION Supermarkets- an excellent Intermarche within a mile or so. Lots of choice. Petrol/diesel- at the local supermarket Attractions- Lots to see and do in the area. We visited the Puy de Dome and it was excellent value for money. We travelled to the summit and back by the train and spent a good few hours at the summit wandering around. This area is very popular with ramblers and hikers. There are lots of castles and points of traditional crafts in the area. Clement Ferrand is the regional capital but very busy. This area has something like 80 extinct volcanoes . Sadly because the site is not in a recognised tourist area it is possibly overlooked by many British travellers. The site is part of the Huttopia Group of campsites and as such you will pay higher costs for pitches and facilities. Having said that it is situated in a residential area and is well managed. It is not the easiest place to find but it is worth visiting. We stayed for 5 nights but if we had booked longer we would have done more touring of this beautiful part of the Avergne which is steeped in history. I will make a point of coming back

Not impressed

Huttopia Royat
The site was very difficult to find, up narrow bumpy hilly roads through built up area. Reception was closed when we arrived at 4pm - they like a long lunch in France but 3 hours is ridiculous. We tried to find a pitch but the lanes are very tight and narrow, Pitches are small, close together and difficult to access. Impossible without a motor mover. Electric hookup on some were difficult to find. Very few water points. Showers good. Pool not good, cold and too small and shallow to actually swim in. Staff when they turned up were hopeless. Wifi in the bar only, and so weak it didn't work on the patio outside. The area around is worth a visit for a few days.

Good for a stop over to break the journey South

Huttopia Royat
Stayed here early July 2018 for 3 nights on our way to the Grandes Causses. Glad we used Google's little orange man to check out the way to this site from Royat!. Do not enter site until you have selected your pitch. Reason - pitches are in little higgledy- piggledy cul-de-sacs and numbers poorly designated. Needed long cable to hook up electrics. We had to trim some acacias to park our caravan on a rain-rutted but now dry and dusty pitch. Sanitary facilities are clean, brand new and ultra modern with square non-draining sinks and showers without hooks. Pool area great and bar has good menu. Unnecessarily stayed 3 nights here as CAMC didn't realise that up until July 14th camping for a single night was allowed and not 3 nights minimum needed. Having said that, a trip up the Puy de Dome on the electric rack and pinion train was excellent.

Ok , but spoilt by rude French campers

Huttopia Royat
Used the site as an overnight stopover on the way home from the south of France, which the site is more than ok for. The site is on the outskirts of Royat not really near any shops, facilities. The site is small and the pitches seem cramped together, the pitches are within a wooded area all accessed by a narrow single track access road, pitches are grass come, grit dust. The electric points on some pitches are quite a distance from the pitches, you may need an extra cable. The reception, bar, restaurant and play area are within one block, all are clean. There is a small shop within the reception but it sells very little, no fresh milk, bread etc has to be ordered the night before. The restaurant and bar are quite expensive. Outside pool, tennis courts, table tennis available, all clean down very useable. Toilets, shower block, washing up area new and very clean. The bad point for me however being, when we were hitching the caravan to our car, blocking the single access road to pitches, we were verbally abused by arrogant French, who seemed not to be able to wait four or five minutes. Never happen to me before at any other French site, we reported this to reception, there response was poor. As such because of this attitude, I would not recommend or use the site again. Certainly lost my custom.

Pitches are amongst trees and at different levels. Not a lot of grass. various activities for adults and children. good pool for children with large patio area. French bread/croissants etc can be ordered at reception for following day. Need a continental to English plug converter, we borrowed one from reception. area good for walkers in volcanic Puy de Dome.
