Why stay here ...

John Torrid Farm is a small working farm situated in the Village of Shurlock Row. The farm is surrounded by ancient woodland which keeps it peaceful and pleasant.

The CL has been finished to very high standards with a hardstanding gravel driveway and pitches which also have the option of grass, each pitch has its own individual electricity and water supply making "hooking up" as easy as possible, the pitches are set in a 1.5 acre maintained paddock which is perfect for BBQ's and fun.

The location is one of the most attractive points as the neighbouring towns include Windsor, Maidenhead, Ascot, Reading, Bracknell, Twyford and Wokingham. Just short drives out and you could be enjoying sights such as Windsor Castle, Windsor Great Park, Legoland, Ascot Racecourse or maybe even some retail therapy at the Oracle Reading or the newly finished Lexicon in Bracknell. If sports are of interest the farm is within walking distance to as many as 4 fishing lakes and is also on a cycling route, if you're feeling a bit more energetic. The CL is also a good base if you don't mind hopping on the train, fast trains from Twyford, Bracknell or Reading direct into London in as little as half an hour and you could be enjoying what the capital has to offer from Buckingham Palace, The Royal Albert Hall, Hampton Court Palace, Wembley Stadium and much, much more. London is one of the greatest capitals in the world offering something for everyone and staying with us here at John Torrid Farm - it's all just minutes away.

If you're a bit of a foody then local restaurants including a handful of country style pubs including The Shurlock Inn, The Beehive, The Bell, The Belgian Arms and more. If you're looking for more chain style restaurants the Lexicon Bracknell and Oracle Reading offer lots of choice.

The Farm is family friendly and we don't mind dogs as long as they're kept on leads. If your feeling "hands on" help is always welcome from feeding our alpacas, walking our donkey, cuddling our pygmy goats or maybe even collecting a few eggs from our chickens. Advance booking is required. We hope you enjoy your stay and look forward to seeing you soon.

Please remember when staying with us that you are staying on a fully functional working farm, early deliveries can be common along with some animal noises, wild foxes, goats, chickens and dogs, that noted we do our utmost to keep the noise to a minimum.

Please note: All pitches are hard standing and awnings cannot be pinned down and must be weighted.

Appalling Customer Service

John Torrid Farm
Thank you to Dave Prescott and his review for saving our holiday! We phoned the John Torrid site to get the gate code 36 hours before we had planned to have arrive only to be rudely told our week’s holiday was cancelled. No explanation or apology were given. The man and the woman we dealt with were not keen to speak to us at all. They had tried to contact us but they had written our number down wrong. We had also emailed them in the past as we had booked twice before which covid restrictions had cancelled but they had not used our email address to contact us or the via the messages we sent with our mobile phone number. The man we dealt to just told us he had ‘told us’ that Tracey dealt with the diary. Tracey spoke to us briefly, the line was bad and then she did not pick up again but we did get a message saying we had ‘been told’ that they couldn’t accommodate us. Thank goodness we had contacted them on Thursday evening as we would have arrived on Saturday at lunch time after a four -hour drive to then desperately find another site able to accommodate us – a likely possibility given it was the first week of the school summer holidays. Even on Thursday evening finding an alternative venue was tricky but we did finally manage it thanks to the lovely Nicky at Hurley Riverside Park who answered the phone at reception after 7.30pm and managed to find us a free pitch. A huge relief as we had plans and tickets in Windsor to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary all of which would have had to have been cancelled. Whilst we can’t review the John Torrid site apart from its dreadful customer service, we can highly recommend Hurley Riverside Park and their helpful and welcoming staff. There location on the side of the Thames was great for visiting Henley and Windsor. The caravan site and the toilet blocks were immaculate.

Very disappointing site.

John Torrid Farm
Initial reaction was that this is a good site as it appears clean and well maintained. However, I must agree with comments of visitor dated 30/3/22 The picture ain't as the site is now. There is no grass between pitches and it is completely hard stand, and I mean hard. If you want to put up an awning, forget it. You ain't going to get pegs in. As previously reported, it is dangerous entering. The entrance is on the inside of a bend in a wooded area. The gate has a key pad to gain entry, but there is only enough room for a car on the driveway, meaning any caravan is right out across the road, on a bend, blocking it. I spoke to the son about it. He said they had been going for 4yrs and had no accidents. There are 2 large sheds right beside the site (the blue ones in the picture). They house a few hundred chickens, which provide superb eggs, but they stink. And this is from someone who was brought up on a farm. There are a number of feral cats running around all over the site, presumably to deal with rats from around the chicken sheds. They kept coming around the caravan, and into our awning, a blow up one which I did manage to put up but had to weight down. They were encouraged to keep coming as at least one other guest there kept putting food out for them. Great fun as I have 2 dogs which was entertaining when cats kept coming into the awning. The son breeds Alsatians and has a number on site. He also said his sister did something with dogs. There was a large compound some 30yds from the caravans where dogs were running free. I don't know if they were put inside overnight, but whatever, they started barking from around 04.00hrs onwards. The electricity is by payment metre. I don't know what level it is set at, but I used £1 overnight when I had nothing on apart from the fridge. I was there three days and the son said I would probably only use about £5 overall. I used almost £4 per day. Overall, the site looks lovely as it is clean and well maintained. In my opinion, it is an ideal site for a camper van or a caravan if you don't have an awning. It is noisy because of the owners dogs and with cats wandering everywhere, a problem for anyone who has dogs. My biggest criticism, however, is that it's bloody dangerous getting onto the site with a caravan. I won't be going back there. Dave. Caravanner from Dover

Not the quietist site but well situated for london

John Torrid Farm
The site is level and has a good surface and marked out bays for 5 outfits and well maintained. for our last few days there were 8 caravans on the site so the view of the grass was reduced. It was great having your own water tap behind the van. The electric meter used £1 and £2 coins to top up, I ended up just using Gas and the Battery. It is situated not far from the Heathrow flight Path, but the noise wasn't to bad from the planes. There is a road behind the caravans which only seems to get busy about 6am. The entrance was marked with the Farm name but no obvious sign CL sign, at night it was hard to see the entrance. There is a dog kennel on the site and there was some barking in the night.

Fantastic little site

John Torrid Farm
We stayed here at short notice and were immediately welcomed by the owners son. The site is immaculately maintained and the animals certainly looked content! We were given advise for somewhere to eat and that advise was spot on. Great food at a local pub (Shurlock Inn) and the staff there were fantastic too. We slept soundly with no bother. The following day we got chatting with the owners other son who more than happily spent time with us chatting about the workings of the farm side. We did read the last review after we stayed and were very surprised as we didn’t experience any of their negatives. This is a wonderful site and we would definitely recommend it.
