Why stay here ...

Our site is in the peaceful, rural hamlet of Standish, yet just minutes from Junctions 12 and 13 of the M5. It is set on our family run arable farm where we grow a variety of crops. Standish has a very beautiful Grade 1 Listed 14th Century Church with an imposing spire which is floodlit during the winter months and can be seen from the site. The bells can often be heard on a Sunday morning or a Friday evening.

The site is easily accessed and level and extends to about ¾ acre. It is in a lovely sunny spot with pockets of shade. The grass is regularly mowed and there are some hardstanding areas. Pets and children are welcome. There are ample hook ups for you to choose where to park and there is good TV reception as well as free Wi-Fi.

The location is ideal for walkers, being in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. There are several footpaths and bridleways around the farm which provide some lovely walks close at hand. The Cotswold Way runs nearby as well as do the Gloucester to Sharpness and the Stroudwater canals where there are some lovely cafés to stop for a coffee and home-made cake!

The site is an ideal base for exploring the nearby Cathedral City of Gloucester with its regenerated docks as well as the Regency town of Cheltenham with its exclusive shops and Stroud with its award winning Farmers' Market. There is a bus stop very near the farm entrance which will take you into Gloucester or into Stonehouse and Stroud. Stonehouse, which is two miles down the road, has a supermarket, pubs, take-aways, as well as doctors, vets, banks and other local shops.

The Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust at Slimbridge is only 20 minutes' drive away, as are the delightful Cotswold villages of Tetbury, Painswick and Nailsworth. If you have time to explore a little further, Bourton-on-the-Water and Stow-on-the-Wold attract tourists from all over the world. Whilst in that direction you could also visit Countryfile presenter, Adam Henson's Cotswold Farm Park.

We hope you will come and pay us a visit.

A Hidden Gem

Arlebrook House
We have just spent a wonderfully relaxing few days at this site. If you are looking for a manicured site like many Caravan Club sites then this may not be for you as it is a working farm with lots of barns, lots of large pieces of equipment and the usual hazzards. You couldnt let your young children run wild ! If like us you are looking for a site that respects wildlife and nature with so much to see, then this will be a joy. The grass pitches are level and softly mown. The hedges and perimeters are a haven for lots of wildlife and the fields beyond are an even greater treasure . Their big barns attract hundreds of House martins who fly in clouds around the site with their tuneful calls. I have never seen as many Butterflies and Dragonflies and keep your eyes peeled for the odd Hare ! Lots of local walks , especially if you have dogs and some good information from Judith, the owner, led us to Lacampagna in nearby Stonehouse.....an amazing Italian. You will need to book as it is packed out from opening to closing. Try as well to visit Nympsfield to watch gliders and paragliders in action against a backdrop of amazing scenery. One downside is that the Hardstand is just that- all concrete and a former farmyard. No chance to put pegs in for an awning and it is rather sloping so be aware. We will definitely stay here again....on a grass pitch, as it is very convenient for the M5. It also is a secure site with keypad entry. The owners are very helpful. The toilet, whilst basic, was spotlessly clean. Many CL's dont have one. Plenty of hook up choices.

Lovely peaceful site

Arlebrook House
Stayed here for a couple of nights over the long bank holiday weekend. Communication to make the booking (via e-mail) was good, with pleasant interaction and helpful instruction including directions and access code, etc. On arrival, access was straightforward and we found our way through the farmyard onto the pitches - easily marked for either grass or hardstanding. No problems with access for our 7m motorhome. With good weather, we opted for grass and made our way to park up on the barn wall next to one of 4 hook-up points. Slight slope, but use of a levelling block sorted this out. A quick wander about located water-points, WC facilities, info point with tourist info leaflets, locations of local amenities, useful phone numbers, etc. and chemical toilet disposal all within easy reach around the hardstanding area. There were three other families staying on each of the nights we stayed (2 opting for grass pitches as well and one on the hardstanding), but we all had loads of space and didn't feel intruded upon at all. Judith introduced herself whilst doing some jobs in the evening, checking we had everything we needed and wished us a pleasant stay. We'd picked this site as a starting point for a 50km cycle ride around the 5-valleys of Stroud and were not disappointed. It was easy to get out onto the route (at Haresfield) and a lovely place to finish, coming back over Haresfield Beacon with views over the Severn Estuary and the bridge. The surrounding countryside is also lovely, with some hidden gem towns/villages like Painswick and Minchinhampton. Overall the ambience of the campsite is peaceful tranquillity, just what you want on a bank holiday weekend!

Not good at all!

Arlebrook House
We arrived on a Saturday afternoon and found our way to the CL where there were 2 signs on a fence with arrows, 1 to hardstanding & 1 to grass so as we’d booked for grass we opened the gate and drove in. There was a slight slope and as soon as we got to the bottom our front wheels got stuck in the field which was very wet. There was no signage at all on the gate and we had no pre warning from the owners to say not to use the grass. The owners were out but a kind neighbour contacted them to ask if they could tow us out with one of their tractors, the owner arrived back and told us that the grass was not suitable and we should’ve known this because the gate was shut, I replied that the gate was pushed too and not locked plus a sign would’ve been an idea. We were put on the hardstanding which is a very sloping large area like a car park in front of a barn opposite some rubbish and old wooden sheds. There were 2 caravans also on here, 1 was a family waiting for completion on a house and the other we were told were living there. We pitched by the end of the barn but were unable to sit out due to it being used as a drive through area for people coming in and out. We were booked and paid for 5 nights but due to not being on the proper pitch on the CL that we should’ve been in we decided on Sunday morning to leave and find another site. The owners were out when we knocked on the door so we called twice and left voicemail to say that we would call back later for a refund of the £80 we had paid for the week. They did not return our call so we returned later in the afternoon, my husband went to the door and Judith answered, he said who he was and he had come for our refund but was told that we wouldn’t be getting anything back as we had caused her husband to have to tow us and had made ruts in their grass! My husband informed her that we were not to know that the grass was like a bog and we should’ve been notified either via email which is how we booked or their should be a sign on the gate. She then said that she would not refund us as they had to turn someone away for the weekend which is untrue as there was only 1 other camper on the CL and if you count us plus the people on the hardstanding (who are actually living there) that only made 4 in total so there was still space for another. The owner then said that she would refund £40 as it was our fault but my husband said no as it was the site at fault not us. I took a video of our van being towed to show family what had happened but the owner took offence at this and said to my husband that I had a cheek filming it! Eventually they agreed and gave us £60 back keeping £20 for a night that we weren’t even there! We were told on site that we were not the first that had got stuck so I think the owners need to look at notifying people that their site is unsuitable in wet weather. Hardstanding area is a glorified car park and the owners attitudes are awful!

Good for walkers

Arlebrook House
Stayed here for 3 nights. Access was fine for our 6m motorhome, and the security barrier gave peace of mind as we were out and about each day. Plenty of space, and there is a choice of grass or hardstanding. Easy access to water and WC Waste. Cycled to Dobbies Garden Centre - just 2 miles down the main road, which was good for browsing and coffee/lunch. For keen walkers, The Cotswold Way is not too far away, and if you have a car you can start at the National Trust Haresfield Beacon which overlooks the site and has spectacular views. For train spotters, the railway bridge 1/4 mile down the road, seems to attract train spotters as there are 4 lines, and it is used occasionally by steam trains. Yes, it is good for stopovers - or somewhere to unwind before starting a holiday.

Pleasant Stay

Arlebrook House
We stayed three nights on this site and having read the last few reviews, which I mostly agree with, it has more merit than just a stopover while travelling north or south on the M5. Yes it has access to plenty of country walking but it is also only a short drive from the city of Gloucester. You can either use the Waterwells Park and Ride at Quedgeley (not motorhome friendly) or drive the full 7 miles there to visit the restored historic dock yards, the magnificent cathedral or just to shop in the Quays, a large indoor designer outlet. We did all three and while I did see motorhomes in Gloucesters' carparks we drove there in our towed car, parking in the Quays multistory carpark. You can also catch a bus to Gloucester or Stroud from the stop located at the CL site entrance. Google indicates it is an hourly service. The access road into the site is is a little rough and needs to be taken slowly, especially to the hardstanding area if you want to avoid crossing the grassed area. With little to no rain forecast, we chose a grass pitch and while some pitches are "levelish" you will need to level up in most areas. Access to drinking water for a motorhome using a hose is good and smaller vehicles can easily pull alongside the waste disposal point (slight slope) to make emptying black and grey waste less of a chore. Would we use this site again? Yes is the answer, it has a lot going for it.
