Why stay here ...

Set in 22 acres of Devon countryside and close to the beach, Hillhead Club Site offers some of the finest facilities in the network. As well as this, the caravan site is set in a fantastic location with a large number of pitches offering stunning views of the sea and surrounding coastlines. There is plenty of entertainment for both the young and old with an outdoor heated swimming pool and children's pool (late May), playground, play area and an indoor complex housing a games room, shop, bar, restaurant and takeaway service for all the conveniences you could want. Hillhead Club Site also hosts a varied selection of evening entertainment and themed events, especially during peak season.

For those wanting to explore further afield there are miles of sandy beaches, an 18-hole golf course, pitch and putt, tennis, fishing, sailing, steam railway trips and a zoo, all within easy reach. If you fancy a spot of shopping, the busy town of Brixham is less than two miles away, Paignton and Torquay are nearby and the ferry across to the pretty harbour of Dartmouth is only a 5 minute drive from the site. For walkers, a lovely stroll along the cliffs takes you to down to sandy beach at Broadsands.

The site received a fantastic new playground as well as improvements to the pavements around the covered courtyard area near the entertainment complex as part of a recent refurbishment.

Hillhead August 2019

We went to the Hillhead site in peak season, August Bank Holiday week, in our Motorhome. As expected it was packed, with many families with children attending. We took along our grandson, before he hooked up with his folks in Brixham. We had visited the site before, in a quieter period, and were impressed then. Given the amount of people at the site during the Bank Holiday week, it was a very pleasant stay, with a good atmosphere. The wardens did a good job all week trying to keep the site nice & tidy - which is a huge task, given some individuals in the washrooms do not clear up their mess, in both the shower cubicles & toilets. Baffling how people conduct themselves sometimes. So to that end, I would advise the staff to put up more notices, particularly in the busier periods, for people to clean up their mess, and leave in a clean state for the next person. The children's play area, swimming pool and play field were all nice for the kids. The swimming pool was well organised, as there were so many people they held 20 minute sessions to control the numbers in the pool. We only used the club once, with our visitors. The meals were good & reasonably priced, and the entertainment was decent too. The bus stops to the Dartmouth ferry, and the other way to Brixham & Paignton were right outside the site. Taxis, when used, were reasonably priced as well. We did a lovely coastal walk from the site to Brixham, via Man Sands & Berry Head - well worth doing for the views alone. We found the staff at the site very helpful & polite, i.e., reception, bar staff, grounds-people. We had a service pitch with awning - we got lucky and managed to select a really nice pitch in the middle of the site. All showers/toilets worked well ..........on some sites, some toilets do not flush that well it would appear - thus I think staff need to adjust the water levels in some of the WC's. All in all, a very nice well looked after site, that offers decent value, and is in a lovely location, which is fantastic for getting around. We'll be returning for sure !

Good location but a few issues.....

We stayed for 10 nights during August - first time to Devon as we usually venture to Cornwall. I agree with a lot of the other reviews - whilst the site is large, the pitches are way too close together. We were lucky and found a pitch (80) in a small 'cul-de-sac' so it was nice and quiet with no one walking past (apart from people in the other couple of caravans) and we weren't on the main road that a lot of the pitches are. It is so tight that cars can't park next to the caravans and are often parked in front, partly sticking out onto the road. I also had issues with the cleanliness of the toilet blocks - there was a shortage of toilet roll (out of around 10 toilets, only one had loo roll in), and people seem to have issues in cleaning the showers after they have used it - it doesn't take much to walk out the shower, get the squidgy mop thing, clean the floor, close the curtain. I'd like to think people would leave the cubicle how they would like to find it. I went in once and there was talc (i mean who still uses talc??) all over the floor and the bench. I appreciate wardens can't keep an eye on this 24/7 but perhaps a few notices around the showers reminding people to clean up after themselves wouldn't go amiss? On the plus side, the kids loved the pool (didn't venture in myself), and the park. We didn't go into the restaurant. There was also a lot of dog poo left in the dog walking area - again maybe some signs reminding people to pick up after their dogs.....? Location wise, it was great for Dartmouth and about an hour from Salcombe. We also visited Becky Falls, Babbacombe model village and Bygones, and various other spots. I don't think we would go back to this site in the peak of summer.

Disappointing

We recently stayed at the site for 2 weeks having booked a fully serviced pitch. When we arrived only 3 such pitches were available and only one was able to accommodate our caravan which is almost 8m in length. We don't have a motor mover as my husband is competent at maneuvering, however it's only possible to manoeuvre if there is space to do so, which there isn't. Eventually with the help of our neighbours we managed to site the van by pushing it into place. Do not choose pitch 192 if you want a peaceful, relaxing holiday it has to be one of the noisiest pitches on the site. My understanding is that caravans have to be 3m apart? We saw Van's not even 2m apart! If we return I definately wouldn't pay for a serviced pitch as there are much nicer pitches elsewhere on the site. Despite my grumbles our 15yr old son loved it and wants to return next year. This site should state that service pitches are only suitable for van's with motor movers as the road is so narrow. At £52 a night it was a disappointing experience for us.

Another great stay

We have a six and two year old and we love this site. We’ve booked for next year already! Great family facilities, especially the play park and swimming pool. Good entertainment for children on a night at the club house and the amusements keep them entertained. Had a poor pitch last year but a great one this year with an amazing sea view. The only downside for me is the food in the club house. Very mediocre and some quite expensive. More gluten free options would be appreciated too! Good range of drinks and just about enough choice of gins, but more would be welcomed. Pool is a very comfortable temperature which is a bonus! We enjoyed trips to Goodrington beach (dog friendly), Torquay (has a nice indoor swimming pool), Brixham (the replica Golden Hind is a hit with our eldest), Paignton (great Geopark, rides and pier) and Dartmouth (stunning river crossing and it has an M&S for caravan meal supplies!).

Lovely Site but ...!

Having just come back from a week away, we have no real complaints. We booked a fully serviced pitch but the only one large enough to accommodate our van required use of the mover as it was impractical to reverse so it was annoying to find out that during our journey, the caravan battery had failed. As usual, a cry for help to the site staff was answered promptly and we managed to be pushed onto our pitch so many thanks for that. Where I think some work is needed and something that has been touched upon by others, is some pitches are very small to the extent that it is not possible to get the caravan + awning on and the car has to be parked elsewhere. Given that the Club strives to offer a standard sized pitch and the fact that charges for this site are at the high end of the scale, I consider that this is not acceptable. It is probably a legacy from the time that the site was a commercial site, but it has been in Club ownership now for some years so ought to have been addressed by now. People using the site need to look at their behaviour. Would they leave toilet paper on the floor at home? Do they block up their own toilet with wipes when we are constantly told by the media and water companies to bin these? Club sites are not Civic Amenity Sites so take home your carpet (yes I did spot this dumped in a bin), broken toys et al and do not expect Site Staff to have to deal with this issue. In the main, we had an enjoyable time. We found the Site Staff friendly and approachable; they have a hard time managing the mess that others leave behind.
