Isn't that just the one day in Cornwall?

Posted on 22/03/2021 21:47

First stage is in Cornwall, the Sunday, then second is Devon, south Hams and all over Dartmoor to Exeter, so a two day event for us. Crowds are usually very big, we expect them to be enormous this year, as cycling fans won’t have been able to get overseas to see any of the other races. We have a week booked, expect a lot of other folks will have as well, as it’s the first time it’s been to Cornwall for decades. Fans and followers usually like to spend a day before race going around course, looking for best vantage points.

The tour passed our way in 2017 apart from the roads on the route being closed firstly for pot hole repairs  and secondly on race day it was a fleeting effect of traffic and tourist chaos. Maybe it's different at the start or end. Anyway we're down for the whole month walking and visiting relatives who will advise. We will be visiting Phillack which looks close to the route as well as Praze and St Agnes which aren't.

There we have it, if it comes into law on Thursday it will be enforced staycations as of next week. Think I will be spending a lot of time at home or in the local area rather than join the crowds.

We've planned a series of small breaks through to September, nothing in August as it's usually the busiest time in our area. I'm hoping we'll be able to take up these breaks, it's all a bit of a step into the unknown. The numbers holidaying here  depend on restrictions being changed as the months progress but so far it looks a bit crowded!

The tour is coming to Cumbria again - and hopefully will be going past our lane end again. No crowds - just farmers having a bit of time off.  Have to wait and see for the exact route.

From past experience, watching a cycle race is like watching the first rally in a game of tennis.

Well that's a b****er.yell

Ruddy cyclists. Didn't realise that they were heading into South Hams on the 6th. September, the day we were booked to move from North Devon to a C.L. near Kingsbridge! Do you think they'll stop the race whilst we squeeze past?

Good job I read CT as I wouldn't have wanted to find out in September.laughing

Rolling roadblock usually WN, unless close to start and finish. Some places get few few spectators, but anything up a hill, on a bend will be busy, and once it’s rolled through ( which if there’s a breakaway, can take over an hour or so) then there’s usually a mad cycle chase to get to next viewing point, to watch again, if course allows enough time.

Roads will be closed very early in morning in some places, when we did race car ride, we were on the road with the police escort riders at 6.30 am, couple of hours down at start, then riders roll out. First day is always busy. Finish usually packed as well, most folks go to finish for a full day, have a look at all team buses, big screen etc.....

Yes, some of the rural parts of the course are fabulous viewing if you can get out there. It was Cumbria and the Borders stage that we followed in a car a few years ago. Stunning scenery. We spent six hours on the road, the biggest challenge was finding somewhere without spectators to have a pee!😂 The fellas were ok, behind a stone wall, but for the ladies it was more of a challenge. The car pulled up near Newcastleton for us to have a pee in some woodlands, we thought we were ok until a load of folks ran up wanting to know who was in the liveried car, cameras at the ready. 🤣🤣

I've written to the CL asking to come a day earlier.

We've been in full day lockdowns a couple of times when the TDF passed through. If you are in the area TTda then give us a shout.
