Wet and windy Askew Rigg

Just spent 4 nights at this wonderful escape. Hard standing gravel pitch proved essential as its been so wet for so long the grass is more like pond with grass growing from it! When you can get your unit right to the edge of the pitch there is room for an awning. If your caravan is over 7m long it is quite tight to reverse from the lane onto the pitch, if of course you are without a mover. As it was so wet you wouldn't want to get a wheel in the grass Each pitch is well spaced and supplied with a convenient ehu point and a bin. Recyclable waste is a short walk along the site where bottles etc can be disposed of. Close by is the freshwater tap. Further into the farm you'll find the toilet waste area and a water pipe to rinse your loo with. This is also where you'll find the toilet and shower. I cant comment on this facility as I used the caravan. The views from the pitches are great and very relaxing to gaze upon from the comfort of your caravan. Behind the pitch are equally tranquil scenes with a pond and resident bird life. Dog walking from the site is good, although again as its been so wet, the close by public footpaths were like streams and very muddy. The lane from the farm to the B road is fine and it is possible to walk along the road but be vigilant, its nor supper wide and traffic does come on you quite quickly. Having said that it is not very busy at all and the grass verges are quite wide. The site does have wifi, it is a little hit and miss as is phone reception, the weather may have affected both. All in all a very nice place and Alan is very friendly and happy to chat, unfortunately I didn't meet Avril his wife. The site is very easy to get to, and booking and payment was straight forward. The A66 is very close so access to the rest of the lakes is easy and Keswick isn't too far away, close enough to drive to bring back fish and chips and still be warm enough to enjoy. Only criticism was towards the local council refuse collection lorry, there is a 5mph advisory speed limit through the site this truck broke the land speed record! If a child had been outside they could have been caught unawares. No need for that kind of speed. The weather has not deterred me from wanting to return, and I will do soon I hope.

Great site in the wet.

We have just spent 8 nights on this site during a wet week. However, the hard standings are a blessing, and this is backed up by the visits to the well located bins behind each pitch which was extremely wet under foot and show the site would have ripped up if not. Everything is well set up and straight forward this is a linear site, and we did not feel too upset by the occasional use of the access road, however as all caravanas are pitched in a row looking at Souther fell (& Blencathra), you can find that all windows are aligned and that impacts on privacy - not that it bothered us too much. The provision of the toilet is always a benefit, and so is the shower. There was some criticism elsewhere as this is in an old farm building - the surroundings didn't phase me, the cleanliness is what matters and these were clean. There is some road noise from the A66, which my wife noticed but I didn't - however, the big positive is that this must be the easiest site to access of the many we have seen in the lakes. Dual carriageway and main A roads up to the last 100 m before the access road, and that was easy too. I have had several problems in the past trying to book and call this site - note, I haven't had an answer from the main phone, however the mobile listed in the description gets you through. Alan was quick to answer that and is a helpful, friendly individual. Would I use again - certainly

First time on a CL, WOW picked a great one.

Just one night in glorious weather and it couldn’t have been better. Spoke to Alan on the phone to book for the next day, he’s really welcoming. Wow what views, amazing. Pretty level pitches, I did use levelling blocks on ours, own bin, plenty of space between the pitches. We did find a couple of walks we could do with our dogs in the short time we were there, you need to cross the road to get to Souter Fell.. I notes from previous review about traffic on and off the site, not a problem for us it’s not a busy road, 2 vehicles on site while we were there. Didn’t use facilities due to length of stay, but had a look in they seemed very clean. We will visit again for sure

Awesome Askew

We have previously stayed at the South of the lakes, so decided to head towards the North end and Keswick. Wow this site is beautifully tranquil, with great views to Blencathra and down into the valley. The site is easily accessible off the A 66. The site itself is well equipped with the added bonus of the geese, sheep and local wildlife which surrounded us. Our host Alan was very welcoming and friendly and always available for a natter. We shall be returning, as already added this to our favourites.

A good stay at Askew Rigg

9 nights at Askew Rigg in October. There was a lot of weather! Pitches in a row facing a lovely view of Blencathra, well spaced. All hardstanding. The farm access track is in front of the pitches but traffic on it was extremely light - not a problem at all. We noticed a slight rumble from the A66 at times, but not much. Toilet. Shower only takes 20p pieces and didn't use. Nice cycle routes from the site. Pub at Mungrisdale did good food. Mr Bird very friendly; advised us to use Met Office forecast for Blencathra Field Studies Centre, which indeed was the most accurate for the site. Mobile reception poorish - we could access sites with some effort. Definitely on our list to return.

Great site, easy access and fantastic views

Very easy to find, about 100m off the A66 and turn right. Yes there is a little road noise from the A66 but only very slight in the day, the site/farm is protected by some trees. The view from the pitches are great and the pond at the back of the site attracts wildlife too. Good location for visiting Keswick and the quieter side of the lake district (North of the A66) and Ullswater. Friendly hosts too. We stayed 3 nights and yes there is some traffic on the farm road but we didn't experience any problems and far less traffic passing than your average CAMC site. Definitely will return. Our first CL after a couple of years trying and failing due to Covid.

Great scenery but….

Managed to find the site quite easily but surprised you could still hear the main road with a constant buzz. Needless to say the scenery is amazing. Hardstandings but slightly sloping. The toilet and shower are really basic so decided against using them! Each pitch has a bin but ours was full to overloading when we arrived and was never emptied the whole time we were there. Had to go find the owner to pay as we never saw him the whole stay. Amazon plus many other drivers using farm access straight in front of all five pitches driving far too fast and a serious accident waiting to happen.

A great CL with only one real negative,

Just returned from a great week here. Managed to explore some great Lake Distric areas we hadnt previously visited. The views from the site are outstanding. The welcome instructions are posted on the water tap. The hardstandings are very well sized, each one has a bin too which is a bonus. Very easy access from the A66. The only neg we had was the fact the farm access road passes right through the CL. This meant we experienced delivery drivers passing by at extremely high speeds. Something to note if you take kids or grandkids. But all in all a very nice site.

Perfect spot

The site owner Alan was very friendly and helpful. Level hardstanding with that fab view of Blencathra, what's not to love? We found it ideal for exploring and had a lovely hike to Bowscale Tarn from Mungrisdale village. Keswick is fairly close and has plenty of great coffee shops and a decent market. Definitely a site that we will use again :)
