Great site for Bath.

It was a little tricky driving through Bath centre, well worth the effort though, just follow the directions given on the web.  This was our first visit to Bath and we have booked to return later in the year as we enjoyed it so much.  The site is clean and tidy well spaced and having water on each pitch was great.  We walked into Bath twice and took the bus back, it's uphill and we have bus passes so it made sense to us anyway.  There is much to see and do in Bath and Bristol is only a short bus ride away.  We both thoroughly enjoyed our stay and many thanks to the owners for providing a lovely site.

Brilliant location for exploring Bath

Bit difficult to find and had to drive through the centre of Bath to get to it. Once there, the hosts are lovely and very helpful and informative. Not the most picturesque site but clean and tidy. Bath is just a bus ride away or you can walk. All in all a nice site and brilliant location for Bath.

Second time we have stayed on the site.Friendly welcome and info pack on arrival.Pretty busy but Merv managed to squeeze us in at short notice owing to being rained off another site. 10 min walk to the park and ride (15 mins up hill coming back!!) cheap fares and buses every 15 mins.Bath is really beautiful and we will be back .Thank you.

Beyond Expectations

It has taken a while to write this review but we really wanted to stress the excellent reviews given. This CL is brilliant for access to Bath and to the surrounding countryside. The site itself is very well run and each pitch having its own services. This was great not having to move our motorhome to fill up with water. We went for a short break at the end of January and loved every minute of it. The motorhome stayed on site while one day we walked into Bath (and back) and another we walked out into the very wet (at that time!) countryside. I cannot recommend it highly enough - there is lots to do in or out of season aided by the loads of information provided by Merv and Lyn. Many thanks to you both and we will be back at some time - just wish we were a bit closer than Cornwall!

Fantastic site; fantastic owners

We first booked to visit the CL at Bicknam in September 2010 but cancelled due to illness. The owners (Merv & Lyn) were very understanding & when they 're-sold' our pitch, returned our deposit, when they might reasonably have kept it. We got to visit the CL a year later, had a fantastic time, & have visited several times since. The site is apparently located within the city limits of Baths but is an oasis of calm. It is within a few hundred yards of one of the main road into the centre of Bath & in a residential area, but you wouldn't know this once on site & surrounded by trees & fields, & occasionally being visited by wildlife. During one visit, we were eating lunch when a deer appeared in the field next door! Each pitch is a hard stand so it is possible to visit in the wettest of weather, when a city break is ideal, and each has its’ own hook-up & water supply. We are particularly impressed by the recycling facilities on site: There are separate containers for paper, cans, bottles, etc. Some club sites we have visited could do with taking a leaf out of Merv & Lyn's book. Most times we have visited, it has been Merv who has greeted us. He always asks if we remember where everything is, tells us how to travel into the centre of Bath, & provides an information pack about Bath & environs. The pack must take Merv & Lyn an amazing amount of time and effort, & they are still happy to answer any other questions members may have about the area. We even phoned the site recently to ask if they knew of any good B&Bs: We are in between units (awaiting delivery of motorhome) but fancied a trip to Bath: Merv & Lyn were more than happy to help. Finally, in submitting this review, we noticed a couple of members have reported unhappiness at having to pay for bookings they have cancelled or tried to cancel. Each case is different & it is impossible to comment on a particular case without knowing all of the facts. But presumably, any CL owner who were to read such comments would be devastated & wish to offer redress ... or if they disagreed with the comments, wish to tell their side of the story. It would be interesting to know whether, as a club, we afford CL owners that right of redress. And in any event, should the club not have a policy on deposits & cancellations? Perhaps it would be useful for members who have negative 'payment' experiences to report these to the club in the first instance & seek a view on the behaviour of the site owner (in this case, seeking full payment for cancellations). If the club agrees the behaviour was unacceptable, then that information should be shared with all members via the 'review' facility; if not, then it should not be posted. It is not clear what the club's view is in respect of the 2 posts about Bicknam; it would be useful to know. The important thing is that members be able to provide proper, & where possible, corroborated, feedback. We hope this 'club policy' element to our review is as helpful as the review itself.

Little Gem

We first visited the CL at Bicknam back in May 2012 and have been frequent visitors ever since. The site is peaceful and quiet with plenty of space between caravans and a real bonus for us is that each pitch has its’ own water supply. Merv and Lyn have been excellent hosts and have been more than happy to help when we have had the odd caravan malfunction. Right from the start we were given the most comprehensive welcome pack I have ever seen, containing details on all the highlights of Bath and surrounding areas. Merv and Lyn are a fountain of local knowledge and will happily steer you in the right direction if you are looking to make the most of your trip. Bath is easily reachable by the frequent bus services or an enjoyable 30 minute walk through Weston and Victoria Park. The CL is also situated right on the Cotswold Way, which is ideal if you fancy a ramble through the countryside. To top things off, the site also sells locally produced eggs and vegetables at extremely reasonable prices, often cheaper than the supermarket. Having sampled other commercial sites in the area, we were glad to get back to Bicknam and at only £12 per night it’s a bargain. Highly recommended.

FULL PAYMENT "DEMANDED"

We stayed on this site at the end of our six month tour of the south west of the UK (2012), visiting many great CL's on our way. Bath had always been on our list of places to visit, so we booked in at this site for ten days but were amazed when a deposit of £65 was asked for. We assumed the owner was fed up with no shows so we accepted this. On arrival our first impression of this CL was one of utter disappointment & dismay and we wanted to leave straight away, but having paid such a large deposit we decided that we would stay for the amount of days the deposit covered. When I spoke to the site owner that we only wanted to stay for 6 days he demanded that we paid the £55 balance owing for the 10 days we originally booked as we had made a Verbal Contract with him, but if he could sell the days we did not want, we would get our money back. He told us that he was always full and has to turn people away at times, So what is his problem? I could not believe the absolute greed of the man ! Bath is a great place to explore but not from this site..

Comment from the Community Manager:

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. The CL owner has contacted me as he is very concerned you did not enjoy your stay at their site and wants to address some of the issues raised. Regarding the deposit, the CL owner’s policy is to ask for a deposit and this is not unusual for sites to request this, especially for a 10 day booking. As stated in the Sites Directory and Handbook on page 270, CLs ‘may ask you to pay the full fee or a deposit and it’s worth checking if that’s refundable. Check how much notice they want for a cancellation too. Always phone as soon as possible if you have to cancel or you may have to pay the full booking fee, not just lose your deposit’. CL sites have a maximum of five pitches available and therefore if you cancel at the last minute or leave early the CL owner may struggle to get occupancy for that particular pitch. However as explained by the CL owner at the time, there was every possibility they could sell the nights not wanted and refund you the money. They presumed you were happy with the situation as nothing further was said, and you stayed for the duration. The CL owner would like to assure you that they go out of their way to help their guests wherever possible and to be friendly and informative in every way. They are sorry you feel they have been greedy but they do have a small business to run and rely on occupancy. They request if anyone does ever have any issues please feel free to come and speak to them at the time and they will do their best to resolve. Again thank you for taking the time to leave a review.
