Just had a long weekend on this site, a lot has already been posted but just to update things, plenty of toilet roll (now stocked in the cupboard) yes the toilet and shower in the same cubicle however 2 new toilets and showers are nearing completion..... noise from the quarry was minimal and certainly not heard from inside the van with tv on. Food in The Red Lion in Waterfall (1 mile away) was excellent, but if you only heed one thing from this review, make sure you book the pub before and don't just turn up (as we did) and people from 3 other vans on site had beaten us to it so we had a long wait.....lesson learnt. if a cl is fully booked in the middle of march then this tells me it is popular and not without good reason, even the owners dogs would pop over and say hi......well worth £12 a night, thanks.
Great weekend at crowtrees
Had a fantastic weekend here despite the weather
Very peaceful site with decent pitches
Will return soon
Thanks
Beautiful site
We have stayed here before and it has not changed. Looking out onto fields, horses scampering around, nice and peaceful.
Family we met were lovely and welcoming. Fresh eggs to buy nice and fresh.
great site, great location
This CL is a great place if you want a break from driving. Craig the owner told us about the lovely short 1mile walk across the fields to the interesting historic pub, Yew Tree. We had a great evening playing skittles n dominos in the pub then sat in the chippy for a lovely meal. A very different and enjoyable weekend, the local hospitality was great, the site was lovely and well kept, hot shower, use of washer & dryer if required and it was good to see the horses in adjacent fields.
Incredible Value For The Money
Well you get what you pay for as they say. Not in this case!!
Ok we have only been caravanning for three years but in that time we have travelled the length and breadth of the UK. Been windy in west Wales, wet in John'O'Groats and hot in the South. We've stayed on sites which cost us £32 for two for the night and paid £10 for a field with electric, water and a loo emptying point.
Noisiest is a toss up between the club sites at Chatsworth and Durham. The first because of the animals the second because of the traffic. Both good value though because of their location and the facilities. Quietest a field near Coldingham with no facilities, again excellent value for the £10 cost.
This site though over delivers for the £12 per night cost.
Access is all weather and easy for all but the very longest or least experienced. Fully serviced hardstanding pitches (yes you will need rock pegs for your awning) are fairly level and drain well when it rains. Traffic noise is muted at most and all but non existent at night. The hum of the nearby quarry soon fades into the background and disappears when the wind changes direction. The view while not spectacular is gentle and relaxing from all pitches.
Facilities i.e. the wet room containing the toilet and shower are clean and not outdated. The cost of the washing machine and drier represent good value for the money.
It would seem churlish in the extreme for me to grumble about a lack of toilet paper when I have to make sure I have my own in the caravan or at home and I am not paying a price which takes into account staffing levels to ensure constant checking. Most parents have experienced that occasion when their darlings are sent to the little room on their own and then discover that their treasure has got carried away with the quantity of paper used. I can see, with it's proximity to Alton Towers, this site will be attractive to families and that the above could easily happen.
If you want an all singing and dancing site with playground to keep your children entertained and out of trouble then you will have to pay considerably more. People who want on site entertainment and restaurant are going to be disappointed and should expect to pay more.
Those likes us who want a quiet location find that this gives us everything we need and more and at less than ½ the price of a site where toilet paper is supplied.
Will we be returning? Most definitely, especially as the chip shop (where the food is superb) for our Saturday night treat is less than 5 minutes walk and they even do Pisa for those who like foreign food.

Caravanner from Northumberland
Lovely quiet site with very good access (I am used to rallying and have used many farmer fields with much worse).
Very relaxing with plenty of room between pitches. Enjoyed watching the horses which are in fields surrounding the CL. As previously mentioned, I am a rallier so do not use site facilities, even on expensive private / club sites, but do agree toilet roll and hand drying facilities should be provided, however, the laundry room was used by the family in the next caravan who had 3 children and they appeared very happy with the facilities provided.
I use this CL as I am researching my family history who originated in the immediate area and this is my 2nd visit to this CL and will come back.
My late husband and I used to stay on the CL owned by Mr Chadwick's parents - Roache House in Leek (which has now changed hands), so, knowing the family, we now use Crowtrees Farm.
The family never bothered us at all during our visit, which we appreciated. We paid at the house the day before we left and also purchased some nice fresh free range eggs - including some turkey eggs,(just waited until someone was around to attend to the horses)!
Lovely location, but won't be returning
Chose this site as we wanted to be close to Alton Towers and for that it ticked the box. Location - beautiful - really quiet, our idea of heaven. Yes you could hear a hum from the quarry, but it really wasn't that loud and didn't bother us. Depends on the level of noise you're used to at night I guess.
The entrance has been mentioned, yeah a little tight (I wouldn't like it if I'd been towing), but my partner got our 26 foot twin axle through no problem - he's more experienced than me!
Having waste and water on pitch - fantastic, thought we'd struck gold - 2 less containers to deal with.
Unfortunately, the shower/toilets let all this positivity down for us.
No loo roll provided. We use our own toilet facilities, but even so, if you did want to use them, you don't want to have to take your own up there! Attempted to shower - what a joke, no hot water. Mentioned it to the owner's daughter, who was going to tell dad, 2 days later - still freezing cold with not a hint of hot. Hand basin - no water at the hot tap full stop! The shower/toilet/basin is a wet room, hardly ideal, separate facilities would be better. Also, no hand towel or method of drying hands (hand dryer, paper towels, nothing).
Can't comment on the welcome - didn't see the owners the whole stay. Only saw the daughter as we went to the house to pay the day after arriving!
To be honest, we were really disappointed. Our minimum requirements are toilets (5 of us, you can guarantee the kids need the toilet when someone else is in ours), shower block and electric. 1 out of 3 isn't good enough for us, so unfortunately, despite the lovely location, we won't be going back. Just not for us.
third visit
third stay on this site as its nice and local for a weekend. toilet/shower has been done up since we stayed last. we had no trouble getting on site with 23ft van, pitches good size. chippy and pub within easy walk and plenty for walkers and bikers.
Mixed Feelings
Nice little site with wide hardstanding pitches (fit van+awning+car) with grass surroundings.Caution needed when entering as site is on dog leg round a tree and then a tightish turn with a 7m outfit to follow to pitches .View over fields from one side and view of main road & garage from other side .Toilet and shower in same room was not very convenient , no toilet rolls provided and not cleaned during our 4 night stay.EHU +water+waste all on pitch but electric very low amps (had to put fridge on gas when 5 vans on site).TV reception very poor will need satellite.Quarry/cement works nearby but no obtrusive noise.Great chippy/cafe very close had great breakfast here.Well positioned for access to loads of local places of interest and attractions too many to list here.
Good if you don't mind gravel pitches
I don't have much compare to given that I'm new to caravanning but compared to the other CL I've been to it was on the small side and I wasn't keen on the gravel pitches. There was a little noise (not just a hum) from the nearby cement works one night but not enough to be annoying.
Having a toilet on site isn't much use in the morning when there's a queue for the shower in the same room.
On the plus side the location and view are good.
